Let us all discuss the good and bad points of all 4x4 vehicles, accessories, recommended service centres, personal experiences etc.

You have extra accessories on board your triton ? at the moment, I only install the bedliner, Alpha GTE canopy and the front fender mirror (for better side and front view). I am still thinking of changing the stock Bridgestone H/T tyres that I heard do not have the grip needed when cornering. However, safety first and extras later.

from my experiences storm sucks to the max with its growling engine (black smoke included) n body rust n bushing and many other problems..

the better 4x4 nissan frontier got smooth n powerful engine but its not very durable..

hilux d4d might be old but many people still use the bcoz its heavy duty body n coil spring which is better than leaf spring

hilux commonrail is good bcoz of the large rear passenger space n again coil spring

It may cause hundreds to thousands depending on the spec of the lamp. Hella is one of the top brand that comes with a hefty price. You might consider other brands.

mine is second generation 1996 gx version engine 3L 2.8l diesel manual. part is cheap and abundance. is he using the 3.4l v6 petrol 5vz-fe/3rz-fe inline 4 2.7 petrol? petrol version is quite fragile lots of people change it to 3.0l 1kz-te diesel engine.

i know that site but sadly i've asked, they do not have many things for my award winning suzuki vitara (1997)
haha

here's a pic of my humble car at me house
my mum wanted to change this to a swift sport but due to the price and it being a non-suv, i vehemently disagree
haha
plus, no more swift sport in yellow in malaysia

Is it okay if a Form 4 student like me join this thread tongue.gif

I'm using (correction: borrowing parents car which is to be given to me when I get lesen) a 1992 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado LJ78G . This Land Cruiser is the Japan import one not the locally assembled Land Cruiser II as commonly seen in Malaysia..

Anyway guys my father was thinking to give the car a 2"/4" raise, if like this I cannot park in most shopping mall car park?

+ another question.. do you guys think Suzuki Jimny (the old Sierra models) are good? I like that car very much.. when I grow older I'd like to modify it to look like this

Absolutely 100%. Jimnys are good off road vehicles. Used to drive one though I don't own one.

It'll beat a Pajero hands down anytime n off road competitions.

The key is that it is small, light ... and narrow...

On a normal road though, its bumpier than riding a camel.

suzukis jimny, vitara (escudo), are all superb
even the new sx4 is just marvelous at off road
and unlike many of its rivals, it can already masuk hutan at stock (i've seen videos where this guy in s.america beli vitara 2 door and terus masuk sungai and mud...(the grill already fill with water...)and the car survived
hahaha...

but the one in the pic is kinda different...haha

Hmm, you're right.. small, light and narrow. It's really small compared to most other 4x4.. the closest small vehicle to it is probably Daihatsu Feroza or Suzuki Vitara 2door.

Yea, only 2 people haha.. I'm using the Japan import LC not the LC II.. about the same lah.. only that the LC II values lower in the market I think.. LC bought in Sarawak last time. There most of the 4x4's are JDM versions biggrin.gif

That's probably it! I was just reading about it in Australian 4WD magazine. It's so small! I believe there is not a single piece in Malaysia. If I want also, have to get one from Australia or USA. It's not so common now.. harder to find. As if that's not enough, shipping pulak satu lagi hal! In the end I just stick to my dad's Land Cruiser sweat.gif

I have seen Lada Niva 2 times in Malaysia. Once in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah (Land of 4 wheelers) and the other one near my house in Gombak. The one in Gombak, I see the car more than 3 times this year.

lada niva was said to be the only car to rival the vitara in the off roading challenges in south america
read it somewhere in one classic 4x4 magazine last time

and sx4 stock cannot go offroad tapi its easily mod-able as its a crossover...hint: pikes peak challenge...nobuhiro "monster" nakajima

Haha.. Sarawak also land of 4x4! When my dad bought the Landcruiser in 1994, wanna drive from Miri to KK at that time have to go numerous river crossings in makeshift log rafts that can carry 2 cars, and have to lalu some area kampung also.. Borneo is the best place for 4x4!

Lada Niva quite interesting, it's like a 4x4 version of the Mini Clubman..

+ South America huh.. that place full of BJ40's!

I believe so, because I have seen them many times. The same vehicle with either Citation or Trooper.

It prevents water from getting in the engine when wading through deep waters. But other parts of the engine/wiring must be sealed also though !

right! it functioned just like the standard air intake(channel the cold air to the engine) which is usually from the front area / bonnet.
since serious off-roader tend to swim frequently tongue.gif standard air intake will definitely submerged ... hence, the the air intake moved.

I have a palm oil estate but not big, just aroung 12acre. It's in Perak btw. When it rains, I think the estate is only for serious offroaders.

Sifus, can answer these questions ?

1. Can I do wheel alignment and balancing of my 4x4 at an ordinary tyre shop or would there be a specialist in 4x4 tyre management shop?

2. I am planning to change my stock set of rims to a more bling bling stuff like a bigger chrome rims. Do you suggest an ordinary tyre shop or a 4x4 tyre specialist because as far as I know changing the rim, doing the balancing/alignment is a routine task and works the same with any other vehicle including cars.

3. After I change to the new set of rims, do they affect the handling or cause a far more worse wear and tear to all the parts connected to the wheel compared to the stock rim and tyre?

Also, snorkles are useful when driving through thick dusty areas like the Namibian desert or Australian outback. I read this somewhere in Australian 4WD Magazine..

LC II SWB is a gem to be owned.

Any tyre shop can do the balancing and alignment.
But those modded (lifted) 1, u got to go to those with more experience shop that deal more on 4x4.

iplay...if compare CRV, INNOVA, HILUX, AVANZA, CAPTIVA and FORTUNER, how comfort do the rear passenger feel inside the fortuner? is it like sampan for them ?

yes yes! agree! the new trd fortuner really nice.

frankly, the rear seat isnt really that comfort. 2nd row still okay. but as for 3rd row, it's really bumpy and there is no space for the leg.

More or less the age as mine. I received it in late Jun 2009. Only installed Canopy and bug guard. I don't really like the stock rim and tyres but if I mod them, it will risk the warranty. Tyres don't have warranty btw but the rims have. That's the prob for new vehicles.

Yup, Navara has been available worldwide except Malaysia since 2006 .. but since Frontier assembled locally, TCM didn't bring it to Malaysia so that they could at least break-even with the investment they've done on Frontier. In Malaysia, it is still quite new.. and it still the mother ***ker of all pickups .. smile.gif

Navara is indeed the strongest stock pickup truck in our country's line up. It can even beat any modded wira or satria and perhaps camry or accord. But that's the strategy of TCM for still bringin in fresh new Frontier so they would have a mid range and high end pick up truck in Malaysia.

stay away from it. unreliable and damn noisy engine. a 1997 terrano cost so cheap but it's not worth the money.
go for hilux, isuzu rodeo or ford ranger. even the mitsu storm is not as reliable.

@hazairi@
try to get a toyota hilux double cabin. else, a 2001 2.8t isuzu rodeo should fit into your budget.
if i am not mistaken, a 2002 mazda fighter will fit too!
stay away from mahindra and tata.

depending on your preference / purpose, find one that either has never been off-road or a hardcore(modded) off-roader tongue.gif

@kazami@
i've seen a sorrento with bigger turbo taken from skyline tongue.gif
but there is nothing much can be done. sorrento's auto / tiptronic tranny doesn't offer much fun as in manual / dsg tranny.
plus, the body roll is just too much going into the corner sweat.gif
btw, turbo engine is not about high rev... it's more of a correct timing cool2.gif

i was doin some reading about the hilux's (hhmm, how shall i call it), incompetence with other truck makes. havin 4 speed auto transmission as opposed to 5 and non inter-cooled turbo..

To my surprise i saw u in two other local 4x4 forums. i didn't register in those forums but i was just reading thru.. U must be a sifu around here. Respect.
this is my first time being in an automobile forum. i've been in lotsa other reptiles and dogs forums. but first automobile. hope to learn more in here..

Wahhhh.... nice Vitara. I' have fond memories of driving the Vitara to the east Coast. Wasn't mine, but my brothers. He had a SJ410 and then upgraded to the Vit.

Both cars are subcompacts and as subcompacts go are rather small. Practically not much space for storage of cargo.

Consider putting a roof rack (it'll look nice) or even a rear mounted cargo carrier like my current Sportage.

Those rims are 22's bro... with 9jj.. tire size is 265/40/22.
I did not drop the or lift the truck.. standard height..
ppl keep tellin me it looks a lil high on the rear end.. and they keep suggesting me to drop it a lil.. but i'm still very skepticle.. i like it like this.. smile.gif

p.s. one thing i like about ranger(the newer model) is that it has 5 speed auto. and an inter-cooled turbo.. it fetches far more horse power than others in malaysian market.. good choice..

Yup it's new here but 3 years old to the rest of the world. Correct nothing beats a Navara when it comes to 2.5L. Even the 3L Hilux/Dmax and even the 3.2L Triton hardly beat the 2.5L Navara just because the VGT I suppose. But the whopping price tag probably prohibits owners from using it for business purpose in Malaysia.

Yeah, there are lines of nice rims from Lenso. Those rims are extra expensive but if your dad can afford the Cygnus, Lenso is no objection.

Guys, need your advice here. Wanna change my Mit Triton stock tyre (Continental 245/70/R16) and stock 16" rim to much bigger rim & tyre.

What is a good tyre and rim to fit in my triton ah ? Planning to change to 275mm or 285mm size tyre and 17 or 19 rim. Roughly how much the price normally ah ? I dont like noisy tyre and drive more on urban road.

Anybody knows good wheel shop in Kuching/Sarawak?

Thanks. BTW I am a Mitusubishi Triton Owner QAL4XX4 rclxms.gif Will post the pic of my truck later. rclxms.gif

According to other sifus, big rims will only be damaged if installed on our truck. It's not designed for bling2 because the truck is damn heavy. Our tarmac is not that good and potholes are everywhere. I recommend a 16" rim (17 is also ok) with thicker tyres. The price range is between 4k-10k depending on brand and size, new or used.

I suppose those who installed big rims on 4x4 were only meant for city drive. Wish i can also change to a bigger rims but the potholes here in Sabah are everywhere and it keeps growing blink.gif ...besides, i have no worries when transporting heavy loads...

correctomundo. u put big wheels on ur truck, u gonna be drvin it like a car. avoiding big potholes. and ur steering will resist turns a lil, hence handling is a lil affected. tire noise, no much diffence. braking has some major difference with low prof tires.. tend to slip easier than AT tires. power wise, a lil reduced but not that whole lot.. i heard ppl said consumption will be affected, but i dun see that happening.. i still get about 9.3km per litre on average.. anybody with stock wheels have any numbers for comparison? i got 22's on. but then again, i have my stock rims fitted with bridgestone AT tires and i have heavy duty hydraulic jack in my factory which eases the rim swapping process with also few workers handy..

but, can't be swapping rims every week. it's gonna strip the studs. but otherwise it's cool..

Potholes are not just terrible in Sabah but here in peninsula as well. I think the Toyo Open Country A/T is one of the best all rounder tyre.

Just call the authorized dealer of Michelin Tyre in Kuching, they quote RM680 for Latitude 275/70/R16. Went to their shop and look for sport rim, the quote RM2700 for 4 sets of Enkei 16" rim. sweat.gif

That's just outta my budget cry.gif . Planned to buy tyre first, next month baru buy rims.

BTW anybody know where can I get this thing ?

Hello guys, i was thinking about the handling of my hilux, the suspension plays a very big part is this department... ultimately i can throw some big bucks and change the whole suspension system..

but since my car is only a month old, that option wud be absurd unless i've got my hand on the golden egg laying chicken..

now that we've scratch that option out for the moment, any of u guys have any idea to improve the handling.. mostly concerned on the stiffness of the rear end.. i dun really carry any load on my tail back.

so, i was thinkin... can the leaf spring be replace with a normal coil spring or any other way such as removing one piece from the leaf spring system to reduce the stiffness?..

all the ideas that i just jotted are merely something arbitraryly popped up in my mind. it may be an impossible chore..

i'm open for any idea.. will greatly appreciate any inputs.. thanks..

Got it already...Last week bought it for RM500/tyre here at Penampang Sabah...The shop owner said this Michelin tyre can last up to 80,000km (if rajin allignment+rotation every 10,000 km)...i was like shocking.gif ...dunno la maybe it's marketing strategy...also depend very much on the way u drive ur car ba...Mine can only last for 50,000 km (previously Michelin also) before i recently change it...

Techron D is also said to offer good protection for metal surfaces against corrosion, an issue with diesel fuel delivery systems due to the tendency for water to accumulate in the fuel tank.

Scary...Is it because of Malaysian made Diesel?? lol

Yup you're right...Michelin rubber are soft u can even feel it when u touch with fingers (i'm referring to Michelin that i'm using now)...but it manage to reached 50,000km before i change it...so it's not so fast i guess...my rear tyre (also Michelin) still haven't change yet...only front tyres...

For me, i stick with Shell coz we don't have Caltex here...hehe..

I did not respray the car yet. I got it like this. The colour has faded alot. The previous owner left her outside exposed to rain and shine.
Im planning to respray her again with the same Tangier Orange paint soon.

Thanks , yeap Landies are tough, But they need alot of TENDER LOVING CARE (TLC)

Yeah not too bad , If the goo is not too deep. I like this AT pattern as its almost similar to those BFGoodrich A/T KO which cost a bomb.
This tyres get me through alot of Light to medium core trails. But for Tougher conditions i'll recommend X/T centipedes anytime

Nice landie James. Great colour. The way I look at it, your landie is begging to really stand out among the crowd.

Before you paint, why don;t you consider a zebra scheme, or even a giraffe scheme. Tiger?

How about Desert Storm camo? Digi camo?

That'll make your landie really stand out.

nah not worth it, its not anything special, instead if i have an old school jeep willys or an old 1970s land rover, id take that anytime.

this one looks more like an overdone pajero, if you tell me, it lacks heritage and style

yeah i dont mind the evolution, just not paying 140k for that. id pay less than 100k for that. also to take into the consideration of maintenance and parts availability.

there is some wrangler pics that i posted in few pages front, perhaps u could dig for it. my s600 restoration is updated frequently on the civic thread, since i dont know where does my car fits, lol. im just a general car enthusiast, i have love for properly engineered cars with good spec and historical values. just no love for proton cos they dont seem to get very far with those

yeah. the pajero evolution MIGHT be on sale.
starting price around 70-80k i think.
but can be higher due to the limited unit in worldwide
forget about it.

anyway, i mostly review your S600 restoration in ZTH
now back to the car that i'm going to buy the 1st gen pajero two doors

pajero evolution is nice if the car is selling around 70-80k. it should be placed around that price. i havent seen any 4x4 , 2nd hand going above 100k.

for 140k, might as well buy a captiva, can save money and also carry 7, its a long term investment!

yeah.. this dakar spec car really have tremendous power
3.5 V6 MIVEC engine specially build for pajero evoultion
its just simply overpowered
you guys should have to listen to the engine roars brows.gif
i still can recall the orginal recaro seats
damn hell it "holds" me to the seat without seatbelts on when doing real real tight turns on high speed
i wondering whether recaro personally make such seats to that car laugh.gif

simple article about pajero evolution

maybe this car can scare a 350z and bump it off the road, haha, i did heard about that car, but the monstrous maintenance of the car will kill you, not to mention, the loan to take to buy that car initially, it will bankrupt you much faster for the love of the car, lol

not really dare to corner real hard dude.
because if make mistake and totaled the car, how?
drive this car out already nervous cos afraid got some careless driver on the road
but i bet it can do all sorts of thing except drift wink.gif

according to the article written 3 years ago, i notice this

The Pajero Evolution is a genuinely rare beast which is therefore difficult to value.
This particular Japanese import vehicle (privately owned but available for purchase though Adelaide’s Port Road Commercial and 4WD and Kansai Automotive) is on the market for around AUD$45,000.
It has less than 80,000km on the odometer and is in excellent all-round condition aside from a rattle through the steering column.

so convert should be like RM140k. but thats 3 years ago case.
anyway, i'll try to do more picture snapping or possibly video shooting on riding this car in the future.
have a nice day

well, ask him to keep it, perhaps finding the right buyer would come in time to own this rare beast. or just keep on maintaining it so it becomes a classic and can ask for classic car roadtax, hehe

Just now around 6.30 pm...im driving from ipoh to lumut...its raining...after uitm sri iskandar in front of me is one iswara and in front of the iswara there is one hilux...speed around 100km/h...im following them from about 70-80 meters on the right lane...when suddenly the hilux lost control and skid in front of the iswara into the left lane and masuk longkang before hit the small cement layered hill usually we found on hill side...the iswara manage to slow and avoid the spinning hilux...on the left there is 22 tires trailer which is about 30 meters behind them...luckily the lorry manage to stop at about 10 meters from the hilux...as i pass the road i check there is running water from middle of the road to the left...he hit the water before spinning...luckily the hilux only face minor damage...broken rear right light and the body kemek...

as i left the scene...im driving around 80 km/h...around 10 minutes later i can see the hilux coming from back...as we stop at the traffic light...i check the tires...he using the oem bridgestone H/T tires...as i heard from many owner...many accident had been cause from this tire...this tire is suck on wet and on water spot...

My family own a Toyota Hilux 09 model...and the model comes with suck Bridgestone H/T tires(pic below IINM the series)...So to all other Hilux and other brand 4 X 4 owner thats using this tyre...please change to other tire ASAP...Its may cost ur live...before we buy the hilux...my uncle own...hes oledi facing two times incident with the OEM tires...one time nearly cost his live...after the incident he ask my dad what tires good for hilux...since we owning a pickup (Ford Ranger) for a long time before buying the Hilux...So my dad recommended either Michelin LTX or Bridgestone A/T 694...we`ve been using many other brand and still the best is Michelin and Bridgestone...

This One...

lol the wrangler, thats more 4x4 relevant. btw oly im using the bridgestone a/t 694 on the wrangler. beats the stock sime tyres anytime! hehe, 5 years warranty on tires and expected 7 years on lifespan, pretty durable tyres if you tell me. oh yeah, my dad's rexton was using the bridgestone oem tyres made in japan, pretty good quality if you tell me. then was replaced with toyo open country tyres, they were really good wet tyres and i drove them like hell on the freeway, hehe

Yo guys,

Here is my Triton :

Will sell it soon and get new SUV (Fortuner of Pajero Sport). No point of keeping "lorry like" car when we never put things on the bucket doh.gif

If it is a 3.2 triton to 2.5 Fortuner/PS, it'll be a down grade...

Super Select gear of Pajero Sport will be nice to play with... but you pay 40 to 50% of the price in taxes when compare to the triton...Worth it?

Mine is triton 2.5. I need a fast, comfortable and durable 4x4 and of course that will last for several years as I traveling to project site frequently. Any recommendation guys? Double cab bump like hell on the offroad and often feels like to puke driving with full stomach after lunch. And onroad the triton feel like snail with almost full throttle 3000rpm and speedometer only 110/120/130km/h doh.gif .

Wondering how come the pajero sport price is double triton price when they just add minor things and almost identical to triton. hmm.gif Seems like just adding canopy on the backside, change the headlamp, leather seat and dvd monitor for triton. doh.gif

Triton 2.5L is quite powerful already. If u hv tried older pick up without common rail engine, then u will know how it feels like.
Triton can reach 160kkm/h easily on highway.
Due to our taxation system, SUV is more expensive. Too bad. Most $$ into tax and wasted.

As mentioned... different tax bracket, were gov. sees it as a competition to Local produced sedan/cars. Double cabs are the only (foreign branded CKD/CBU) private own vehicle with low tax. Actually the market is ripe for a Full-Time 4WD all coil spring double cab, basically Fortuner/Pajero Sport suspension/gears with dual-cab body (shortened flatbed)

Canopy is of course much much more expensive compared to a single canves. But with a canopy, there are more advantages compared to disadvantages especially for balik kampung trip.

Hi guys, I plan to start a small business in the near future so I think a pickup truck should be suitable for me. unfortunately my budget is quite tight (around 20K) so any recommendations? icon_question.gif

Also recently saw a used Tata Telcoline in motor trader. is it worth it? I mean, it's cheap but that's about it. I don't know much about this pickup truck.

RM850 is normal price already for canvas.
If flat one, around rm550. there is one 2nd
flat canvas for sale in mudah.com

you go to batu caves4x4 or ORE4x4?

check out the mother trucker 6 speed manual navarra... more powerful than the bigger displacement hummer tongue.gif
too bad the power delivery is not as smooth as the hummer nor does it was as stream line as the bigger displacement 3.2 triton.
waiting for the 3.0 hilux.... wonder how it will fare in with our diesel quality.

Mine is 18" not 20" because I sometimes go to my ladang kelapa sawit, if 20" or 22" rim, the tyre must be very damn thin. Not quite suitable for me though. For me 18" is superb for my type of travel, looks nice on and off road. but yours is blistering 22", must be bling bling killer and looks sweet on city street. I sometimes carry my mom and in-laws around town. They need car like suspension that's one of the reason I replaced the originals.

how much you did with installation?
*
spring later will upgrade. the cost was not quite a bomb, quite affordable if you want comfort and good handling.

I think you should go for the BFG A/T, you just buy MT if you are using your truck 90% on gravel....

It's a cool and powerful truck but I don't really trust Nissan on a long term basis but Nissan petrol cars are trustworthy but not diesel

tested a couple of weeks ago. engine isn't as smooth as the 3.2 triton but the instant 'urge' is there brows.gif
won a drag with a waja in traffic light tongue.gif
it takes corner better than the vigo and triton. cabin is more spacious + classy but look spartan compare to the better ambient triton.

still, definitely a better buy than the triton and lagging vigo overall. didn't take the pics though. phonecam running low on battery... sweat.gif

btw, those hilux / vigo of newer design isn't as reliable as the older hilux sr turbo.

exactly! i've tested all the double cab pick up truck around. the smallest 2nd row seat around was those of L200. d-max was a tad better.
no doubt, vigo and triton is spacious but the navarra beat 'em all. the only drawback on the navarra's vast cream color interior was the design;
too boxy compare to the later and slightly lower roof line(i felt so...). but it does looks classy thumbup.gif

Those 4x4 with A/T box can do simple wheel burnout...

1. Left foot on brake pedal.
2. Shift gear to L or 1.
3. Right foot on accelerator, depending truck, most will reach to full boost at 2000 RPMs.
4. Gently let the RPM climb to 2200 RPM and release the left foot as quick as possible and watch...

Scary... smile.gif

Of course, it will make all wiralution and wajadilotion run for their lives but practically, it's very dangerous. However for the rest, don't try this on public roads. Try finding somewhere isolated.

It depends on what condition you are planning to use it. If more towards street use, auto tranny is chosen.

Choose auto la, if manual later if u drive through a traffic jam then ur leg will become "krem krem". Nowadays everywhere got traffic jam, so hard to drive to work, sampai ofis kaki sudah penat tekan clutch.

Yup you are right, I drive both auto & manual, auto is my company car, manual is mine, almost same performance offroad, although auto a little bit annoying on the gear but it is still ok and easy to drive offroad and onroad. Manual haiya.. Need to change from gear 1 to gear 2 fast, if not engine will sound like big tug boat and black smoke will come out from the exhaust. I like to use direct gear 2 from stop when driving in the urban area.

hey there gombak mate

i recommend abang rauf@raup 4x4 worksyop in kg. melayu batu caves since you are from gombak.

his worksyop is located in the red circle in the map below. if im not mistaken his worksyop is the 3rd lot from the right of the building. anyway you'll see a lot of 4x4's such as pajeros in front of his lot.

so far my experience with him is good. good job with reasonable price for a 4x4 that is.

ranger usual cost for service?

engine oil price is dependent on what kind of lube you want to use. remember ranger need 7 liters of engine oil so that gonna be 2 4liters bottle of lube for you. shell helix diesel 4l is nearly 100bucks per bottle.

air filter around 15 bucks, diesel filter around 30 bucks. unusual cost? haf to ask the foreman lah hahahaa

Yup. Very true... I will try this on quite empty roads and of course very dry weather. If wet, forget it as the truck will fish tail to other side of the roads.

Sometimes, it helps the heavy truck to accelerate faster because some such as Triton 2.5 A/T have poor acceleration unless you rev engine up to 2200 RPMs.

Guys, between Petronas / EssoMobil / Caltex diesel, which of these would you prefer?

I rate Esso as having slightly better mileage over Petronas or Caltex. But Esso macam tarak power (flat acceleration feel)

if for offroad use, you should stick to diesel engine. diesel engine is design for rough usage and proven durable for low/mid end torque. You are going to smack that SR20DET if it is used for offroading. That Nissan 3.2D is from Nissan Safari ?

Fit a big stonking diesel in a suzuki? Haha....it will be front heavy.
Hv seen SR20DET in a suzuki. But it's a tight fit. Hehe.

Off road, torque is king. Not buzzing high rpm.

Rear stabilizer but for the front is more popular to stabilize the steering when cruising through potholes and flood.

hi guys. i just completed driving from kuching to miri (9 hours). Stay one nite in Miri. Then next day drove to KK. got lost in Brunei coz couldnt find right way to border to go to sarawak then sabah. stay one nite in KK. then drove back to miri but have to stay one nite in Kuala Belait (Brunei) coz border gate closed at 1000pm. then yesterday drove from kuala belait to kuching about 8 hours. by the time i reach home at 9pm suddenly my kia sportage engine just died and could not start. Lucky didnt stop during my journey. So, this morning go to naza kia SC and the mechanic say 1 out of 10 sportage sensor faulty. If i stop the engine then cannot start already. Again lucky didnt switch off engine from Brunei to Kuching. So he replace my sensor (5 minute job...i think it is air sensor which he already bring with him) for free coz under warranty which he said got new improved chip.

So far, driving sportage average 100km per hour but confident since can drive through bad bumpy and uneven road with ease. max speed managed at 150 at straight road. FC better on long distance average at 10litre per 100km. Normal city driving between 13-16l per 100km.

Wonder whether sportage suspension and engine can last long since really push the car hard on bad roads and overtaking.

just added a bullbar and some spotlights yesterday......however driving a Hilux with 90kmh maximum is the only key to get optimum FC....i've tried. Beyond 100kmh, it will be a fuel guzzler.

From full tank fuel till the fuel low indication light comes up, which is around 70 litres. i get an average of 650km. which is about RM119 for 70 litres.
i'm using 2009 hilux twin cab.

which is about 9.3km per litre of shell diesel fuel. which comes up to about 5.46 km for RM 1 fuel.

we share the same boat here, I heard the stock ECU controls the top speed not to reach an unsafe speed. to me, 150kmh for a stock hilux is considered already unsafe, not just hilux but other trucks too that shares the same height.

the stock BS Dueler HT is made in Thailand and the quality is not as the one from Japan BS although the model is still the same. I heard that that BS AT Special is better that the stock HT. however your driving behaviour plays an important role as well.

Send your current turbo charger for repair. Most mechanic says they can repair turbo, but they send out to turbo specialist.
U can try Tong Turbo, send it yourself.

How can u tell whether a chop shop unit is in good condition? I don't really trust chop shop turbo. Hehe

hi there ahsam

whats the price to repair a turbocharger & where is tong turbo located?

im guessing my ranger turbo is broken as there is a whirring sound sometimes when i press the accel.

just wanna know the current price range before going to a mechanic as fren told me it cost RM1k to change ranger turbocharger (chop shop one) last 3 years ago.

regarding to know if the turbocharger unit is in good condition, im thinking of letting the mechanic to source for it as he will be responsible it is in working condition.

How u know your turbo is not functioning well? Leaking? A little leak is normal. Whirring sound is your turbo spinning. Should be normal unless u feel that your car is underpowered, and your turbine is shaky, scratching its housing.

Not sure bout chop shop price. my guess would be RM 600 ? got to survey around. (pls take note that this is a used unit with unknown history)

Sending it for a complete rebuild is another story. www.tongturbo.com
Rebuild cost around RM 1k. Call up tongturbo for quote.

im just guessing because the whirring sound is loud. previously never heard it that loud or muffled by the diesel engine. just plain old vroom vroom diesel engine sound pushing the ranger.

sometimes pressing the accel the sound "wheeeeeeeeee" is loud & clear. even in the cabin with all windows up & aircond full blast. one of my fren told the same thing happen to his ford ranger & it was the turbocharger turbine spoilt.

thanks for the information. havent gone to any mech or worksyop to check yet because i need the pickup for my job until end of the moth.

my current freelance job takes me to worksite that is inaccessible without 4wd. estate road, small stream, heavily eroded jalan tanah merah uphill all got man.

hope it wont take a large slice of my paypacket. crossing fingers huhu as i dont have a steady income in this trying economy time.

go for auto if it was mainly for town driving. nowadays, auto gearbox is very flexible too with it's overdrive function for off-road adventure.
if you want more control over the car, go for manual.

What overdrive function for offroad? Hehe
With auto, u still hv control of your car. No problem.
U hv D, 2 and L and overdrive button. Not forgetting your 4H and 4L.

Use the auto gear as usual, where
'L' only allows 1st gear,
'2' only allows 1st n 2nd gear
'D with overdrive OFF' allows 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear
'D' with overdrive ON' allows all 4 gears, 1-4th.

used to drive an auto double cab back home.
for extreme off-road, you can always choose L and engage 4h or 4l. when i was a kid, it was even worst in older 4wd machine. either you manually lock both of the front wheels before you venture into off-road or during.... doh.gif
for light off-road adventure, turning off the overdrive will allow you to start in higher rpm compare to running on all 4 or 5 gear brows.gif

Turning off overdrive can't let u start at higher rpm.
It's just disable your overdrive gear, ie 4th or 5th gear.

Some auto 4x4 can let u start at 2nd gear instead of 1st. This reduces the torque transfer to the wheels, reducing the amount of wheels spin. (toyota lc 90 series, 1kz turbo has this function)

noted. thanks.
point was no matter what, for off-road functionality, lower gear play the most important part.
fc wise, most of the advance 4wd nowadays are running on 2wd; either fwd or rwd on normal road condition. once a slip in any wheels detected, ecu automatically transfer / distribute the torque to all 4 wheels / whichever wheels with the most traction.

with 40k budget,
hilux sr, vigo out. unless u looking for older hilux 166, 106 with 3L engine.
nissan frontier, almost there, might need to add a bit on budget.
ford ranger or mazda fighter, sure can
mit storm, sure can.

with your budget, i think storm is better for your usage. it's more comfortable among the choices available.

if u looking for toughness, hilux is your choice, but be warned about the higher road tax (2.8 engine) and not so powerful engine.

I can consider taking extra loan if approved,(but) if more than 60k , i think can get new triton (single cab) lite ma,

How about engine durablity, heard mitsu a bit lack on that., ford also have to check rear axel for sign of leakage.

Planning to go used car dealer in batu cave this wekend.

My company recently bought a used 2007 Triton (A) for RM 74k and condition is marvelous except for minor exterior scratches.

My own Triton is also a 2007 bought a year earlier. No prob with both trucks except for minor mods here n there.

Next on the list is the 2010 Navara (M) for the other director. So, whenever there a company trip, we let the Navara go first since Tritons can't catch up anyway.

Is there Triton single cab here? Never know that.
If budget up to 60k, can look for hilux sr.

Why look for a truck in the first place? do u need the flat bed?
otherwise, i suggest u look at suv for a more comfortable ride n useful cabin space.

I thought single cabbies only exist in Thailand, because nearly everyone there can't afford to pay for an extra 2 doors.

Tata parts will kill you with price or frustration. EON SC are famous for u know.. "excellent service" and "lidat wan, biasalah.." for most probs.

Do you need the 4x4 capabilities?

The number of double cab trucks in thailand is triple the number of ours here in Malaysia.

Cheap. It's about RM 60. Pls confirm with spare part shop.
2 pieces of bearing > RM 60-70 in total per side.

ORE brings only expensive tyres only la bro .. Michelin Latitude is around RM550 if I'm not wrong, the BFG is much much more .. I need to replace my Dueler AT tyres too.. still not doing physical shopping yet.. wondering if Dunlop MaxGrid AT2 is any good, this is the same tyre as General Grabber AT2 .. I've asked around and ppl still asking me to go to Klang to get my tyres .. hm.. probably one fine day I'll do a trip there..

Went to a Conti/Dunlop shop .. they called many many places and they couldn't find any MaxGrip AT2 .. they've AT3 they said.. hmm.. couldn't find anything about AT3 on the Internet. Yoko AT/S 165/70/R16 is selling at RM440/pc .. but I don't like the thread ..

Added on April 15, 2010, 3:33 pmJust realised that the AT3 that the guy was talking about is actually a Dunlop GrandTrek AT3 imported from Japan at RM550/pc .. the thread is just like what on my Dueler AT
