OK, I finally watched an entire 90 minute match of Obertan in action for France vs Chile in the Toulon Festival Final (U20).
To begin, I'd like to point out that I dont remember Obertan taking a single shot during the entire match even though he seemed a league above everyone else when in possession of the ball. His teammates also seemed to struggle to keep up with his creativity which was a step or two ahead of their thought process.
On more than one occasion, brilliant team moves initiated by Obertan were broken up my poor touches and decisions by his teammates. One major culprit was the big midfielder Sankhare who was rather selfish in possession, he seemed intent of pulling off unnecessary tricks and half the time it ended with the ball being taken off him or a forced pass which would eventually be intercepted. On more than one occasion Obertan made strong runs into dangerous areas and either received the ball late or did not receive the ball at all as Sankhare tried a shimmy or two.
When in possession, Obertan seemed untouchable. He literally walked around defenders and I can only think of maybe one or two possessions during the entire match where he was dispossessed. He never wasted a touch or motion out there and was very composed in tight situations. His passes seemed to always hit its target and he created a fair share of opportunities for his teammates to get a good look at goal. The best part about his possessions were that he never slowed the flow of play by holding up the ball to make a move, all his dribble moves came in the rhythm of the game.
The only thing I wish is that he made a greater effort to be aggressive in the final third. He was always around the box making the unselfish pass 10 out of 10 times. I'd like to see him cut inside or take a strike at goal more often.
Overall conclusion: Very impressive.
Trying to find more matches to watch this kid.
Have not signed him yet as far as I know.
