Bruce completes Campbell swoop
![]() QUOTE Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has tied up his first signing of the summer after completing a swoop for striker Fraizer Campbell. Campbell, 21, successfully completed a medical this afternoon and has put pen to paper on a four-year deal with the Black Cats. Manchester United will receive an initial fee of £3.5m, potentially rising to a maximum of £6m. Campbell spent last season on loan at Spurs as part of the deal which took Dimitar Berbatov to Old Trafford. He also had a successful temporary spell at Hull in the 2007/08 season, and media speculation suggested Tigers boss Phil Brown had also had an offer accepted. But Bruce pressed ahead to tie up the deal to bolster his strikeforce ahead of the new Barclays Premier League campaign. A product of Manchester United's Academy, Campbell's first taste of senior action had a distinct Sunderland twist. He came off the bench in Roy Keane's testimonial game, ironically replacing current Black Cats midfielder Kieran Richardson. He made his full United debut as a substitute in the Manchester derby in August 2007 before joining Belgian outfit Royal Antwerp on loan. That was followed up by a successful spell at the KC Stadium, where Campbell fired 15 goals to help Hull into the Premier League. Widely tipped for another deal in Hull, Campbell instead found himself spending last season at White Hart Lane with Spurs. A tally of nine starts and 13 substitute appearances were forthcoming, including three goals. Internationally, Campbell is an England under-21 international and was on the scoresheet as Stuart Pearce's men reached the final of the European U21 Championships. The club's exclusive online TV service, SAFC TV, will be broadcasting an EXCLUSIVE interview with the new signing this afternoon. QUOTE(viNcee @ Jul 11 2009, 11:04 PM) This is totally unrelated to what is currently being discussed but I must admit that I'm not the biggest fan of Manutd's jersey design next year. Fortunately, the release of that jersey meant that prices dropped for last season's design instead. So I gladly purchased my very first Manutd jersey today! where did u bought the previous season jersey?QUOTE(Wan @ Jul 11 2009, 11:51 PM) i thought Hull City already agreed the fee of 6mil, end up snatch up by Sunderland |

there goes another local lad from our academy.
frankly im sadden by this.its been a while since our academy produced a forward and on top of that its been even longer since the last time we produced a local forward. it seems like some how we are too dependent on foreign talent.yes our academy has come up wth some good players whom made it to the 1st team but so far none in the forward section.campbell should have stayed last season if its not for lazy berba, he better prove his shitty price tag next season. i hope wellbeck has better fortunes and so does kiko. |

I really don't understand us fans(some, or most, depending where you look). We want to see young players be given a chance, but then we blast the club/SAF for not buying star players. And people talk as if young talented players grow on trees. Talent like Rooney, Ronaldo and Messi comes once in a lifetime for some. And to break through to our team, that's the sort of talent that will have a chance. That's why not that many strikers break through, ever, because they would be competing directly with top 20-50 strikers in the world. Not to mention the youth strikers that we had through the years weren't good enough, except for maybe Rossi, but he wanted out by himself.
We are the best team in the world, team full of stars, top players, and chasing for everything we compete for. But when we give the youth a chance, and lost the game, we are quick to blame SAF for fielding a weak squad(Everton FA Cup semi springs to mind). Bloody hypocrites I say. As for Campbell.. he was always going out on loan last season. Wigan had their loan bid accepted for him, but Spurs wanted him in that Berba deal. SAF didn't rate him that highly I guess. Good talent, but not for us. Didn't really fit into our team, as shown in his games for us, where he only showed pace. Contrast that to Welbeck who fit seamlessly into our team, and was involved in moves. But people still don't rate him as high as Macheda, who apart from scoring those wonderful winning goals, produced very little. But both of these players could go far if they keep on improving. One thing they have over Campbell is that they're able to lead the line. And can we stop with this Berba lazy tag? Oh look, he doesn't run 100km/s.. look he just stand there and make a pass.. good pass to be fair, but he doesn't run about, he must be contributing nothing to the team. But look at that player running around like a madman.. oh he lost the ball again, but never mind, he's running, that means he's contributing! ![]() Feel free to make up your mind on who was effective. Minutes per goal, minutes per tackles.. ![]() ![]() Berbatov on the left, Tevez on the right. Added on July 12, 2009, 6:47 amReally, which youth players we have ever let go(recent times) become stars somewhere else? Pique and Rossi maybe, but they both wanted out with contracts expiring in a year. Most are not good enough. We should forget about having players every year break through. If one(let alone a group of them like 92) broke through every few seasons, that would be an achievement. This post has been edited by Wan: Jul 12 2009, 06:47 AM |

Not sure where their loyalty lies. Towards the club or its players? |

Amen to that Wan. Well said. We've not really seen a dearth of local talent capable enuff of wearing the United shirt since the days of the fledglings. How many actually go on and become superstars elsewhere anyways? Greening (Champions League winner haha)? Lee Martin? Chris "Oh look what I spent my promotion bonus on" Eagles? Welbeck looks like the most decent player with enuff potential to break into our team in the future, plus Fergie obviously rates him. Was it Fergie who said Welbeck has a serious shot at making it into the World Cup 2010 team?
The issue on Berbatov has been discussed to death. Someone should look up his "distance covered" statistics. He scored some massive goals for us last season, and was very critical in the few games we actually looked like a formidable attacking threat. People claim he's a waste of money, and then go on and rave about Aguero who's gonna cost an additional 20million. Madness. |

Probably thinking that it is like playing FM where with 80M can buys anyone and it will come good to win everything.
SAF will knows who to buy and to make the team works. Football it is 11 players. |

To be fair, Berbatov haven't set the world alight.. but it's his first season in a misfiring attacking side. Let's give him a chance. It's not like he did badly, he was decent-good.

Isn't there was a point where SAF actually told Rooney not to overdoing his usual running and try to attack more? We have enough workhorses in the team. The likes of Rooney, Park, Fletcher and etc has been doing all the so called "donkey work" and we need someone to make use of it and provide the end products.
I will take "less overall running but more effective runs" instead of "running/covering all over the field but no end products" anytime. This post has been edited by alien2003: Jul 12 2009, 11:49 AM |

It was more about having Rooney conserve his energy and use them in areas of the pitch where he's at his most lethal (final third). He seems to hate losing the ball so much that he'd chase the player who took away his ball all the way back to his goalkeeper. I'm sure the crowd loves things like these, but Fergie has a point. Without Ronaldo, Rooney will be our focal point, and everyone will be looking to find him near the opposition's penalty box.I will take "less overall running but more effective runs" instead of "running/covering all over the field but no end products" anytime. |

Trouble is, Ronaldo was no where near as lethal as people think he is and the same goes with Rooney. Our title hopes may hang in the balance of one Owen. |

I'm still hoping Rooney would break the 30 goal a season mark. Have it for a few years now. He's lethal in front of goal, just need that luck with injuries and hope his form stick this time. Berba can easily get 25 for us if he got that much for Spurs. Maybe with true wingers around on both flanks, these two will flourish. Add Owen into the mix, we could be in a for a healthy goal scoring form. Can't wait to start the season. Where will the goals come from?
