You are the one really need to google...Hokkien no doubt is the largest group but not up to 86%:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysian_Chinese

QUOTE
Dialect Population
Hokkien 1,848,211
Hakka 1,679,027
Cantonese 1,355,541
Teochew 974,573
Mandarin 958,467
Hainanese 380,781
Min Bei 373,337

It's because they teach Mandarin in schools. Also I hear Hokkien is dying in Penang. Only the old folks speak hokkien nowadays. Maybe that's why.

BTW Hokkien kinda sounds like Klingon.

They have the rights to answer you any form of language that you comprehend. if you want them to reply you in hokkien, does this means they also should start a topic on "is Mandarin a low class language? My colleague doesn't like me reply him in mandarin".

maybe NOT all of your colleague eating with you understand hokkien. so its better to speak in language where most of them understand. If you keep speaking in hokkien , and they reply you in mandarin... this could only mean its a sign you better switch back to a language where most ppl understand you, rather than your own syok-sendiri hokkien. Don't be so insensitive

Oh no ! Not this again.

Mandarin is just a northern dialect made the national language of china.

Read china history forum for the relationship between chinese langaues.

Hokkien is official language of Taiwan. Mandarin is secondary.
More foreigners are learning hokkien and mandarin. Who says hokkien is low class is probably those KL chinese pig.

Mandarin is younger than Cantonese

Why people refer Chinese as Mandarin instead of just refering it as "Mandarin"?

After all, the term Chinese for me, is just a large group that comprises of Mandarin, Hakka, Cantonese, Hokkien, Wu, and a number of tribes that live in China...

China has a long history. All the chinese languages were the same language 5000 years ago but due to war, china broke up into many countries many times and that's how the languages split and develop differently.

Mandarin is just the northern language influenced by the manchurian language.

don't talk all so noble lah. It's just common sense to use mandarin as a national language in china because its widely used.

Manchurians are not chinese but they have an assimilation into the Hans thus making them a part of chinese history.

Manchurians who know that they are Manchurians, but have virtually completely assimilated into Han culture and don't make an effort practice distinctive cultural practices to make a statement that they are Manchurians.

Mandarin is just a widely used language hence its just common sense to make it into a national language in china.

I don't feel any shame with the Hokkien and others dialect. Somemore I was a Hakka roots with Teowchew mother tongue. I feel proud to say it loudly because i can speak 3 dialect Hokkien, Teowchew and Cantonese. But the only regret is I never have a chance to learn Hakka because of my family.

Let me tell u which is more "original"...either hokkien or english?

Let's take the famous book which is Stephen Covey famous 7 habits for successful people. In fact,in hokkien language is already "Exist" long time b4 Stephen Covery write tat kinda book!

Dun believe? read below:

Habit No 1: Be Pro-Active
Kin Chiew Kin Ka (fast hand, fast leg)

Habit No 2: Begin with the End In Mind
Ooh Tao Ooh Buay (have head, have tail)

Habit No 3: First Things First
Chik Poh Chik Poh Lai,Ban Ban Lai
(One thing at a time, slow and steady); or
Cho Tow Seng (do first)

Habit No 4: Think Win-Win
Long Chong Ai Yarh (want to win in everything)

Habit No 5: Seek To Understand Rather Than To Be Understood
Cho Lang Ai Eh Beng Pek (you must be understanding)

Habit No 6: Synergize
Tai Kay Ai Hup Chop (all must co-perate)

Habit No 7: Sharpen the Saw
Toh Bua Lai Lai (Sharpen your knife)

Conclusion....Stephen Covey's famous 7 habits for successful people are nothing more than a free adaptation of Hokkien phrases.

So why pay thousands of dollars to listen to chao ang-mors like him when your parents, wife, husbands, and even the auntie-auntie and ah-mah also can give you that kind of advice every day?

No such thing as hokkien low class, mandarin high class la... then english where is its standing ?
zzzzzzzz doh.gif

its the foundation or the way how ppl are brought up... maybe most of gangsters speak hokkien doesnt mean that the rest are low class la...

i myself can speak teochew, hokkien, mandarin (not really good, but still learn to speak) All my colleagues speak mandarin coz they are mandarin educated and i can just say those... easy words in mandarin but i still learn to use it and speak more often with them

so, there's no high/low class between languages !!

Highest class Chinese dialect will be Cantonese followed by Mandarin and Hokkiens

Same goes to Chinese intellectual IQ ranking based on states.

HK-->Singapore-->Taiwan

The Taiwanese Hokkien are different from Malaysian Hokkien

hokkien is low class? LMAO, read this and next time u will think tiwce before speaking other chinese languages...

Ancient Imperial Language of China – 2,000 Years Ago

How Did it Sound Like? (Mind you, it's no way similar to Mandarin)
Has this Ancient Language Survived?
Who Speaks it Today?

You'll be Surprised.. You have heard it. You, your parents, or grandparents may still be speaking this ancient, archaic language!

Yes, it's HOKKIEN (Fujian/Minnan Hua)

Hokkien is:

1. The surviving language of the Tang Dynasty (618-907AD), China 's Golden Age of Culture.
Note: The Hokkien we hear today may have "evolved" from its original form 2,000 years ago, but it still retains the main elements of the Tang Dynasty Language.

2. Hokkiens are the surviving descendants of the Tang Dynasty -- When the Tang Dynasty collapsed, the people of the Tang Dynasty fled South and sought refuge in the Hokkien ( Fujian ) province. Hence, Hokkien called themselves
Tng-lang (Tang Ren or People of the Tang Dynasty) instead of Hua Lang (Hua Ren).

3. Hokkien has 8 tones instead of Mandarin's 4. Linguists claim that ancient languages tend to have more complex tones.

4. Hokkien retains the ancient Chinese pronunciation of "K-sounding" endings (for instance, Hak Seng (student),
Tua Ok (university), Thak Chek (read a book/study) -- the "k" sounding ending is not found in Mandarin.

5. The collection of the famous "Three Hundred Tang Dynasty Poems" sound better when recited in Hokkien/Teochew if compared to Mandarin.

6. Consider this for a moment: Today, the Hokkien Nam Yim ochestral performance still has its roots in ancient Tang dynasty music. Here's the proof: The formation of today Nam Yim ensemble is typically seen in ancient Tang dynasty paintings of musicians.

More Astonishingly:

Although not genetically-related, Hokkiens, Koreans and Japanese share many similar words (which are different from Mandarin).

That's because Hokkien was the official language of the powerful Tang Dynasty whose influence and language spread to Japan and Korea (just like Latin – where many words were borrowed by the English, French, Italian, etc). Here are just a few words in Hokkien, Japanese & Korean for your comparison:

To all 49 Million Hokkien Speakers:

Be Proud of Your Ancient Hokkien Heritage & Language! Speak it Loud and Clear. Teach Your Future Generation this Imperial Language, Less it Fades Away.
Be Proud Children of the Tang Emperors.

To all Mandarin-speaking friends out there -- do not look down on your other Chinese friends who do not speak Mandarin – whom you guys fondly refer to as "Bananas". In fact, they are speaking a language which is much more ancient & linguistically complicated than Mandarin.

Keep in mind that Mandarin is just:

1. A Northern Chinese dialect (heavily influenced by non Han Chinese) that was elevated to the status of National Language by Sun Yat Sen for the sake of China 's national unity.

2. Mandarin was never spoken by your proud, imperial Tang Dynasty ancestors. It was probably spoken by the Northern (Non-Han) Jurchen, Mongols and Manchu minority. Start speaking the language of your ancestors today.

Hokkien and the other dialects got no foul words?

Cantonese is the most used dialect in the international business scene.
Even Li Ka Shing the richest Chinese in Asia who is Teo Chew speaks Cantonese.
The other important Chinese dialect is Mandarin.
Guangzhou Province in China combined with HK-Shenzen is China's main economic powerhouse region has Cantonese widely spoken there.

Hokkien cannot be compared to these 2 main dialects.

Added on June 25, 2009, 6:44 pmGuangdong is also China's most prosperous region with the highest GDP among all other provinces in China for 2008.

a lot of people dont know that hokkien can be considered a poor mans language, the people from hokkien themselves dont really speak hokkien (fu jou, the capital of hokkien have got their own dialact). it was only during the migration period that the hokkien kin from certain parts of that province ran around the world brining that language along with them, they settled in places like taiwan and malaysia. the hokkien province howeveer have got tons of local lingo that im sure teh most adapt of people in malaysia would suffer there, its very different.

the problem with this that amit all the arguments of heritage and what not ,the mainlanders can spot you out if you are not hokkien. they say its in the looks, they claim that a lot of malaysians are mixed and rarely you get one that can be defined with pure hokkien features. a lot of mainland chinese can spot at a glance that im not from china, not even to mention the hokkien province. they dismiss our soo called heritage because most of it has already been malaysianised and really after mixing with soo many mainlanders i do have to agree with them.

also a lot of people here dont know that the hokkien kin is a very notorious bunch of people, the people from hokkien province is barred from entry to US and japan.

Just because Wah Lai Toi plays Cantonese shows doesn't mean Hokkien is low class...
on a side note, I know alotta rich 'uncles' who converse in Hokkien
*
one thing for sure... only low class people will say others are low class

if they think that their cantonese are so high class; if they think that their cantonese are so hot; if they think that the world businessmen have to learn cantonese in order to make deals, let them think

becoz they can't do shit with their cantonese anywhere, anyhow, anyway

even the richest guy in hong kong isn't a cantonese, and they think they are "highest class" ?

a lot of people dont know that hokkien can be considered a poor mans language, the people from hokkien themselves dont really speak hokkien (fu jou, the capital of hokkien have got their own dialact). it was only during the migration period that the hokkien kin from certain parts of that province ran around the world brining that language along with them, they settled in places like taiwan and malaysia. the hokkien province howeveer have got tons of local lingo that im sure teh most adapt of people in malaysia would suffer there, its very different.

the problem with this that amit all the arguments of heritage and what not ,the mainlanders can spot you out if you are not hokkien. they say its in the looks, they claim that a lot of malaysians are mixed and rarely you get one that can be defined with pure hokkien features. a lot of mainland chinese can spot at a glance that im not from china, not even to mention the hokkien province. they dismiss our soo called heritage because most of it has already been malaysianised and really after mixing with soo many mainlanders i do have to agree with them.

also a lot of people here dont know that the hokkien kin is a very notorious bunch of people, the people from hokkien province is barred from entry to US and japan.
*
When i went to fujian province, none of them said I am not china born. In fact, I was fairer than most of them. laugh.gif

Fujian province has many dialects/languages.

The so-called hokkien in msia is called Minnan and Minnan has many branches such as Ciang ciu, chuan ciu, teo chiu.

Penang hokkien belong to ciang ciu while Malacca/Johor hokkien belong to chuan ciu.

Teo chiu is hokkien in case most people don't know. laugh.gif

if Hokkien is a poor man's language, why Lim Goh Tong used Hokkien until the day he died? Was Uncle Lim poor?

goddamn bastard !

there are hokkien people that are popular and successful in the world no doubt, not to mention that its one of the richer provinces in china, however all my china friends tell me that fujian is a very notorious area. certain places like fujou are cool and all but the people from fujian province is blacklisted in a number of countries. all my chinese friends regardless where i meet them say that the same thing.

i was too suprissed at this argument by them, considering i do come from a hokkien background however when two different chinese mainlanders tells me the same story in totally different places i do have to take into account of their words. also i did a random google on fujian for u and this came up

a brief mention about fujian
http://us.altermedia.info/illegal-drugs-in...-rings_460.html

another article about the fujian people and migration to the us, rich but dodgy practicecs
http://www.slate.com/id/2188450/entry/2188451/

Fujian and the snakeheads
http://www.unhcr.org/refworld/topic,4565c2...e6ad4024,0.html

also note that fujian people are barred from america, canada and japan.

be proud of your heritage sure, but also know that fujian aint one wonderful place either. just find one mainlander and ask about fujian and see what they say. i started it teh same way wanting to know my roots what i got in return was shocking, heck they dont even consider malaysian chinese as chinese anymore! sad.gif as i said i can be considered a poor mans language when one knows the reputation of the fujian province

*
The reason Cantonese was used so much in the region was because up to 1997 Hong Kong was a British Colony. Being a financial hub made it so that if you wanted some leverage in the country you needed to know the language. Do some research and thinking before using mere facts to justify your post.

Hokkien is a dialect , just like others, cantonese hakka teochew, there is no ranking for language, how can you rank it as a low class language just because you scared people say your are low class?

Whole northern area of malaysia is low class?
All the chinese in china that speaks hokkien is low class?
Whole taiwan is low class?
Who singapore is low class?

Come on la ppl, grow up!

The only reason that you rank hokkien is a low class language is because you are a low class fella !

not anymore

while chinatown is still crawling with cantonese, they are no longer the "most" in number

the zhejiang people (including shanghai) are the top, follow by the Fujian, then only Guandong.

but most of these people are professionals, they don't congregate in chinatown, so you do not see them.

In the early years during the migration of Chinese to other parts of the world, most of the immigrants were from Guandong. Hence, the Chinatowns were mainly Cantonese speaking Chinese. And also the Hongkies added up to the numbers of oversea Chinese before 97, the return of Hong Kong to China.

Worst, it seems that the Hokkien rejection come from Hokkiens themselves. wah lau way.....

If nobody speaks it anymore, then our next generation wouldn't know how to speak Hokkien, which is very pathetic. I find it really handy to know many languages and dialects in overseas.

I've had people coming up to me and say Hokkien sounds very rough. I think it's because many people learnt to know many foul words in Hokkien which then makes them perceive Hokkien as a low class language.

The solution is actually simply: make hokkien cool using pop culture. And more people will start speaking it. This is how Cantonese survives strong despite the mandarin onslaught.

Most hokkien tv shows and songs sound very 'obiang' and kampung compared to mandain and Cantonese ones. If this can be changed then I believe this low class perception will be eliminated.

hokkien dialect is not really low class lar just that most of them feel that speaking hokkien in certain area u would be laughed at.......

like KL area most peoples are speaking cantonese, but if u come to PJ area most of them speaking hakka or cantonese or hokkien, when u come to Klang most of them speaking hokkien dialect

i am a teochew but i speak hokkien on daily basic, i could understand abit of cantonese as well hakka too mandarin also.......

whoever that think a dialect is a low class, they themselves is low class indeed

Mandarin is a spoken n written language for most chinese lar no matter where you go u speak mandarin most of them can understand de smile.gif
