Mandarin is younger than Cantonese

Why people refer Chinese as Mandarin instead of just refering it as "Mandarin"?

After all, the term Chinese for me, is just a large group that comprises of Mandarin, Hakka, Cantonese, Hokkien, Wu, and a number of tribes that live in China...

China has a long history. All the chinese languages were the same language 5000 years ago but due to war, china broke up into many countries many times and that's how the languages split and develop differently.

Mandarin is just the northern language influenced by the manchurian language.

a lot of people dont know that hokkien can be considered a poor mans language, the people from hokkien themselves dont really speak hokkien (fu jou, the capital of hokkien have got their own dialact). it was only during the migration period that the hokkien kin from certain parts of that province ran around the world brining that language along with them, they settled in places like taiwan and malaysia. the hokkien province howeveer have got tons of local lingo that im sure teh most adapt of people in malaysia would suffer there, its very different.

the problem with this that amit all the arguments of heritage and what not ,the mainlanders can spot you out if you are not hokkien. they say its in the looks, they claim that a lot of malaysians are mixed and rarely you get one that can be defined with pure hokkien features. a lot of mainland chinese can spot at a glance that im not from china, not even to mention the hokkien province. they dismiss our soo called heritage because most of it has already been malaysianised and really after mixing with soo many mainlanders i do have to agree with them.

also a lot of people here dont know that the hokkien kin is a very notorious bunch of people, the people from hokkien province is barred from entry to US and japan.

When i went to fujian province, none of them said I am not china born. In fact, I was fairer than most of them. laugh.gif

Fujian province has many dialects/languages.

The so-called hokkien in msia is called Minnan and Minnan has many branches such as Ciang ciu, chuan ciu, teo chiu.

Penang hokkien belong to ciang ciu while Malacca/Johor hokkien belong to chuan ciu.

Teo chiu is hokkien in case most people don't know. laugh.gif
