Anything special with Aranui Cave? I don't mind missing it if it's about the same as the other 2...
*
Ah I can't give you an accurate answer on that as I didn't go to Aranui Cave. I only went for Ruakuri and Waitomo.

I have crappy knees, so walk was a bit tough for me but should be OK for everyone else. Short 15 minute walk. Slight incline but the sights are worth it. Just like how the walk around Lake Matheson is worth it. 4.4km loop but all worth it. Apart from those orcas I saw in Bay of Islands and Doubtful Sound, these 2 walks were the best parts of my last trip.

Sounds amazing. Thanks for the recommendation wink.gif

When are you going again? Am thinking of going again in June/July if I can get All Blacks vs British and Irish Lions tickets next year.

To South Island? I'm not sure when also. Depends when my partner is free to travel with me and whenever there are cheap flights from Auckland to SI. laugh.gif

Awesome. Always loved NZ. When I was in AKL, stayed at a firned's house in Orakei. She recently moved to the North Shore though. Here's hoping I can get those All Blacks tickets and go again in June.

Lots of Asians in North Shore these days, compared to years ago sweat.gif

is it possible to do so?
E.g: Rent a car from ABC car rental (duration: 12 days)
2 days at Auckland
fly down to Christchurch continue 10 days
*
Most likely no. Two different rental contracts. But you can try to speak to the car rental company to see if they can give you a deal.

Hey guys, I will be travelling to NZ in March 2017 for 2 weeks with AA so I will be arriving and departing from Auckland. Just wanted to ask advice on how should I plan my trip.

1) How long should I spend in Auckland? I'm thinking of 2 nights then head to south island.
2) Should I fly to Christchurch, drive to Queenstown, fly back to Auckland (or vice versa) OR fly to Christchurch, drive to Queenstown, drive back to Christchurch on a different route, fly back to Auckland (i think it's abit tough to do this due to time limitation) OR drive from Auckland all the way to Queenstown, then fly back to Auckland?

Thanks!
*
I would suggest to fly directly south. Christchurch.
Then just follow any good south island itinerary for about 1.5 weeks. I'm sure you'll find much useful information on the net about this.

Fly back to Auckland before you go back to KL or the other way round. Give maybe 1 full day in Auckland if you're into the city, otherwise half a day is good enough. Maximize your time in South island. If you're gonna drive from north to south or south to north, try to give it more days as it's gonna be realllly rush to cover so many areas. Your trip is pretty much gonna be clocking millage only and the driver is going to be hella tired.

Yup more or less decided to not drive from north. Will fly to Christchurch and start our journey there.  Assuming I have around 11d10n for south island, do you think it's possible to start and end at Christchurch? I notice that there are three main routes (from a few blogs that I went through): arthur's pass to the west coast passing by Franz Josef Glacier, the Mount Cook route and the east coast route to places like oamaru, dunedin.

What would you recommend? I know it depends on the places that we would like to visit but just wanted to get a rough idea. Are Oamaru and Dunedin worth the visit?
*
Definitely yes 11D10N to cover quite a bit of South Island.

I second air_mood, it's worth to cover Dunedin for the Otago Peninsula. I did the west coast covered Akaroa, Christchurch, Tekapo, Rakaia, Arthur's Pass, Hokitika, Franz Josef Glacier, Wanaka, Queenstown, Arrowtown, Glenorchy, Invercargil, Bluff and Dunedin then back to Christchurch the last time. But that was about 15 days la.

You did West Coast but you missed out on Blue Pools? Well, all the reason to go again then I guess.

Next time I'm going, I'm going to go Akaroa and Kaikoura probably. Also maybe try Doubtful Sound again as it was foggy when I went there the last time around. And cover more of the bottom part of North Island i.e. Napie, Wellington etc.
*
Exactlyyyyy. Hence need to go to Blue Pools. I saw some photos on instagram and people were jumping off the bridge there into the clear blue water. Omg so wanna go there.

Yeah, there were a few people who did that off the 2nd bridge when I was there. I just watched though, couldn't do it because of my crappy knees. Oh if only I got there a few years earlier before I had this knee problem. Same thing prevented me from doing the Auckland Tower Skyjump or bungy.
*
Haha. Were there a lot of people when you were there? What month of the year did you go?

I think it'll be super risky to do any bungy or jumping from high places with a crappy knee. Last thing you want on your holiday is an injury.

I was there towards the end of April. As it is with New Zealand these days, you'll get Mainland Chinese tourist everywhere, so there were some when I went there. Crowd was OK, not bad, not too many people.

Yeah, hence why I didn't do it. The only bungy I ever did was the crappy 22m one in Sunway Lagoon but that was before I had my knee injury. Really, really wanted to do the Auckland Tower Skyjump had I been able to.
*
Ah the one in Sunway lagoon is nothing compare to nz ones sweat.gif

End April autumn time. Bet the changing of leaves were beautiful. Was in arrowtown early may and it was soooo gorgeous.

Hows the internet access like over there in new zealand? From what I've gathered scouring the internet, free internet access is provided by libraries etc in major cities.
Are they fast? I intend to back up many of my photos on the cloud as I travel for a couple of months
*
Internet in the city area is quite fast. I don't know about outskirts though. Some places don't have fiber yet. But backing up photos generally shouldn't have a problem.

lucky that you saw blue water. i went there and the water was greenish and cant see whats down there. maybe its raining or water from the glacier? so i skipped the jumping.
better to bring your own laptop. i went to their cafe to transfer 64gb gopro to xhdd and it tooks 1hour and still half way copying. waste of time and money. slow computer they have..

Color of water could be because the weather was sucky when you were there. The sea also looks boring and dull when the sun doesn't shine.

This was what I saw at Blue Pools. I was extremely luck this trip. In the Bay of Island, seeing dolphins were guaranteed, orcas though were a rarity. We managed to see a pod with about 5 orcas or so during my trip. Beautiful, majestic animals.

Beautiful color of the water.

Hi guys, anyone have experience transiting from international flight to domestic flight at auckland airport? how long does it take to go between international and domestic airport?

I'm arriving at auckland using airasia, and planning to use jetstar from there to christchurch.
*
Custom clearance may take some time. So it can be hard to say. But give plenty of time in between. Better if can stay overnight before flying domestic cause flight may delay sometimes.

QUOTE(n8210 @ Nov 3 2016, 10:32 PM)
I almost missed my flight years ago... when a group of 4 whom have checked in their luggage but did not board the flight. We were delayed quite some time because they were calling for them, and at the last minute when they did not show up, we had to wait for their bags to be taken out. And since we have missed our turn at the runway, we had to wait and wait and wait... til there's opportunity to take off, clearance from tower.

This was before 911. But a horrifying memory, cause I was worried the whole flight... can I catch my next flight? Pay double triple for the next flight??

I guess this is where travel insurance comes in handy.

Hi all,

I will be going to NZ for 2 weeks Oct next year with my wife and 2 kids. From now on I will post noob questions here and hope you guys not getting annoyed  laugh.gif

For starters, I would like to know your suggestion for our trip. Should I do normal roadtrip + airbnb or using campervan or combination of both?

As for the itinerary, still not planning it yet but I know this thread has lots of them and will digging it soon.

And you guys know an apps or website that people usually use when they planning a road trip? it will show as a map so that we can see more clearly the path.
*
I did a short campervan trip up north for a week or so. But I'd still prefer roadtrip + motels/airbnb for a good comfortable rest. It's not that much difference in cost either.

Depends on your 2 kids as well. The kids may enjoy the campervan trip, different kind of living environment, etc. But if too young then maybe a bit of a hassle, motels will be more comfortable. 4 to a car for road trip is just nice. Huge campervans can be hard to drive and park. Go for motels with cooking facilities, lots of motels have rooms to accommodate 4 pax.

NZ is easy to plan. Google maps is good enough.

QUOTE(Goods In Travel @ Nov 26 2016, 02:18 AM)
I will think that a campervan for 4 might be a bit squeezy, plus you have to look for camp site so that you can park and charge and clean your campervan.  The rental for campervan is not cheap too.  If you would really like to try travelling in a campervan, maybe just for few days?
*
They can get the bigger one that fits 6 pax. Which was what we took the last time.

It's not easy to drive that thing. Plus I can imagine it can be a real hassle finding proper parking in the town.
