can somebody help me with my problem posted earlier please?

hmm, actually there are guides provided by fellow forumers as to how to disable data usage completely on iphone already. why so many people still face this overcharge problem? and curse telco operators? why dont just use the method provided? is it because it is not working?

There won't be any data implied if you don't use push, GPS or app store all the while.
It is exactly like normal HTC or Nokia smartphone. What's the point if you pay RM2K for an iphone 3GS while disabling its 3G function?

Hi, got a problem here.

Anyone know how come i read my message or go into the inbox, my iphone will say "could not activate vellular data network. You are not subsccribed to a cellular data service"

open inbox also need to send data?
*
My guess is whenever u go to inbox, iPhone will auto update your inbox.
There is a Fetch setting in Settings > Mail/Calendar.
Even if you set it to Manual, this setting only tells the iPhone you will fetch your new mails manually.
And that particular "manual" action is by you accessing your Mail app.

I googled around and found out there are a lot of iPhone users unhappy that the iPhone is still able to access data even when you switch off Data Roaming.
So far, the fake APN works for me but i learned from a fellow LYN forumer you can't change the APN on Maxis set.
Maybe need to dig deeper to search for a solution.

As for the GPS, iPhone is having an A-GPS which mean it is not a full-fledged GPS chip like Garmin.
In order for A-GPS to work, it will require data access to know the initial location for the GPS apps to kick start the navigation.
I'm using Sygic GPS App now and it worked this way.
It's kinda defeating the purpose of having a GPS app on a foreign land because it needs to access data first before sending signals up to the GPS satellite.
Anyone notice anything similar?
Perhaps I should try switching Airplane Mode and run my GPS app to see it works eh?

When using aGPS, there is no way for us to disable the data usage as it uses our phone line to initially fix the starting location. On conventional GPS, they need to lock to at least 4/5 satelites before it will function and that will depend on the location of the user. If the user is surrounded by buildings or trees, the lock in period will be extremely long as the satelite can't detect your GPS chip.
When using your mobile line for locking in, your data will be used in 3G, gprs or edge format for the initially lock up. Imagine, you can call out in most of the place, even inside toilet and you will know why aGPS is a lot more faster and accurate compare to GPS.

message - can be sms or email message. i will assume email part. for these, you need to disable the "Fetching New Data", just select it as manual trigger and set the PUSH off.

bear in mind there are other apps will can connect to web in background, mostly like game.

you can set your 3G off and only use Edge, at least it wont download fast and incur high cost. nowadays, i just select the "airplane mode" and surf net. but beware, it will disable all your incoming call/sms.

so, of all methods, only the fake APN works? but it is weird some of my friends dont have the cellular data network, therefore they cant change the username and password. hehe.

@boomer, thanks...it seems aGPS will access data first, then the GPS satellite. sad.gif

@lilster, i found there are guides on how to show the APN settings. But you'll need a jailbroken iPhone to do so.
http://www.simonblog.com/2009/09/07/how-to...lbroken-iphone/

As it seems Maxis or Digi has just disable the EDGE settings to be shown on the menu. They didn't restrict users not to add new profile to it. So I can't help to assume the fake APN may work because it will install it as another APN profile. Anyway, below is a Youtube video before you want to start anything. smile.gif

you have to toggle off DATA at BossPrefs.

and yeah, aGPS uses the help of data line initially to fix your location, but it doesn't necessarily have to. I've successfully used my gps with NO data countless numbers of times to get to places and it works just fine. Its just that it might take a while to get a satellite fix on your location if its cloudy..etc.

Check under more options, it might not be there by default but you might be abble to add it.

Btw why are you using bossprefs? that app is no longer maintained and its even stated in the disclaimer that you should be using SBSettings.

Is your iphone updated to new carrier settings? If it is not, you can go to your settings>general>network>cellular data network.

There, replace all the info for your current APN settings to meaningless inputs. "blablabla..ex.xsadsadewrasd?Q@#?"(username/pass..etc)

This will make the data connection fail, but if you do it this way you might need to redo this each time you restart your phone.
