QUOTE(lhongwuh @ May 12 2009, 08:42 PM) As you are aware, scores is not the only aspect of getting the scholarship, still got financial background, interview performance and co curriculum achievements.Example, 13A1 applicant, sucks in coco, play-a-fool interview, father has a monthly salary of 15k. Do you think the applicant deserve the scholarship? By the way, anyone got calls from JPA officers yet??? Still no sign.... |

nelson how is ur koko?
father 15k salary should not play a part IMO. scholarships should be based on academic merit. for everything else there are loans. and besides, if u compare 15k salary with 10k salary. 10k salary, with 2 sons getting JPA. compare that with 15k salary with 2 kids, nobody gets JPA. the person with 15k gonna easily be financially constrained than the person earning 10k. just so you know, even michael jordan's son is getting a scholarship. and if financial background is taken into account, why do rich ppl need to study? then people will start complaining bout rich brats , spoiled kids. lol jz my 2 cents, dont mean to personally offend any1. sorry if i did. For JPA scholarship, family income is one of the criteria. Michael Jordan's son should not be a scholarship in the form of financial aid. Perhaps a scholarship based on academic excellence or sports. Please be clear about the scholarship discussed before comment. Not sure about the AUSMAT though, but the German language is done there. For Korean Engineering, you do your foundation/Pre-U there if I am not mistaken. You just study Korean locally. |

QUOTE(nelsonyap48 @ May 13 2009, 12:04 AM) Those info are last year. I was last year's batch, among the majority who failed to get, LOL 10A1 2B3 (one of them being Malay).Furthermore, I have been paying a lot of attentions of attentions since Form 1 (the year my sis got it), or to say, initially it's my parents who watch over it for me, feeding me information, but slowly I pick up the responsibility on my own. Nonetheless, they change every year. I can say nothing about it. Like now got IPTS/A already. Ah, just one more info. Usually if you get Medicine or Dentistry, quite a number will get sent to IMU even if you are told that you have overseas offer. Don't worry, in the end you still get to go overseas and it's very possible that you can get into prestigious medical school like University of Edinburgh through IMU partnership. Also, few years back, German Engineering scholars did A-Level in UiTM, that was year(s) before they contract out for IPTS to do the Pre-U. Now, it's said that the better one are sent to UiTM while the not-so-good one got sent to Inti, Taylor's etc. for Pre-U. AUP is American University Programme, that's how Inti calls it.
Sunway and UiTM call it ADTP I think, America Degree Transfer Programme. It's just up to you how you call it, all are same thing. For subjects to be taken, it should all follow the American style, you study a broad range of knowledge. But I don't think you got to choose your core subjects though, under sponsorship of JPA. You may not even have the choice of your breath study, but I am not sure about this. JPA may only concern about subjects that can get credits, not necessary entertain your interest shall you want to take Philosophy. (But if Philosophy can get credits, then you should be able to take it as breath.) It's way more to talk about AUP, subject choosing etc. |

QUOTE(ccm123 @ May 13 2009, 05:21 PM) Instead of sitting around and feeling sorry for yourself, you should use this as a motivation, I'm sure there are other scholarships out there, other pathways to actualize your dreams, if there's a will there's a way, best start planning out an alternative future than wallow around in self-pity kid. |

to those tht got it, congratz, celebrate a while, then get over it, prepare to start studying, n when u started ur study, pls dun act as if u r top of the world, maybe u r not, but there r some tht thinks they r better than other students in the college, y m i saying this, bcoz last year junior had been really cocky n it makes other nonjpa students think they r bunch of cocky b**tards
to those tht didnt get it, hope u will get over it, yes, they got it, but it doesnt mean they r better than u or wut, so wut they hav good cocu, so wut they hav good result, u live ur own life, start planning for college, after tht u will realise, networking, socializing, n other criteria r more important when starting to work to those tht didnt get it, n choose to whine here, telling others how u earn ur own money to study, telling others how u r better than those tht get jpa, well, good for u. if thts the case, u shud start working, earning big money, n stop browsing the net for nth kthxbai |

QUOTE(nelsonyap48 @ May 13 2009, 03:39 PM) By the way, can i choose my preferred course? Like IT, can i choose software engineering? Or the jpa makes all the decisions? In a way u could... JPA is a lil flimsy in this CS.. so u can some how slip in through...as far as the US is concern..there is no major in software engin.. except a few.. most unis offer only CS..then from there u pick ur subjects that u r interested.. if SE it is..then pick the SE related ones.. but u will still grad as CS, that's all if u r doing AUP.. the core u have to settle here are Physics 1 and 2, Calculus 1,2,3, Linear Algebra and if possible Differential Equations as well Not much Computer related subjects are able to be transferred directly to the US, so its best to clear the maths, science, and humanities 1st |

Well, be happy with what you have. Think of others who doesnt have any offer at all. Well, if you talk a lot during the interview, it is actually putting yourself into the disadvantages because the interviewers may think that you are dominating the discussion and not willing to listen to others during discussion, but of course I do not know how long of your speech time when you said it's "a lot".I strongly agree that THIS and ANY scholarship depends very much on your luck and your faith towards your religion. It's very subjective (the selection) because: 1. questions asked in interviews are different 2. different interviewer 3. different courses applied (critical courses like medic, denty, and pharm are harder) 4. the different quota This post has been edited by holycreeper: May 16 2009, 05:59 PM |

Hmmm.... I don't think form 6 is a bad choice at all, if you are a person who can do self-studying, and hardworking. You still can apply for JPA after form 6 unless you really wanna go overseas now badly. I'm sure that if you can score 4 flat or at least 3A 1B, you can guarantee yourself at a public university.

Ya, hopefully, but chances are low. Ell "good" or "bad", it's them to judge. Of course, competition is stiff this tyear, because more straight A1 students produced last year. Thanks so much for our "quality" of our education system.

QUOTE(holycreeper @ May 16 2009, 05:53 PM) haha... Well, be happy with what you have. Think of others who doesnt have any offer at all. Well, if you talk a lot during the interview, it is actually putting yourself into the disadvantages because the interviewers may think that you are dominating the discussion and not willing to listen to others during discussion, but of course I do not know how long of your speech time when you said it's "a lot". Do you think it's fair?I strongly agree that THIS and ANY scholarship depends very much on your luck and your faith towards your religion. It's very subjective (the selection) because: 1. questions asked in interviews are different 2. different interviewer 3. different courses applied (critical courses like medic, denty, and pharm are harder) 4. the different quota |

guys, just wanna ask, those who got 'local' means u gonna complete ur degree in malaysia only? coz if they say IPTS, it might be twinning programme you know, i mean for medicine, eg IMU, PMC, MMMC etc.
if 'local' includes the possibility of twinning programme, then keep your fingers crossed. for those who got medicine local, who knows you might get IMU and later on transfer to those prestigious unis in UK or Australia? that time you won't envy those who got russia direct at all. just my 2 cents. |

Under any circumstances, I do believe if you got local, but got admitted into IMU, Nottingham, Monash or others that come with twinning option, you do stand a chance in obtaining an overseas opportunity later on.
IMHO, JPA is trying hard to secure talents within the country and if they find you worth investing for overseas, then they will give you the money for it. This is because, there's quite a number of special scholars who are supposed to go overseas but failed to do so. Hence, there's extra money, and hence, they use it up on you. Well, take note here. What I said just now is my mere guess only, although I find it make sense. |

It's luck. Many top scorers who did better (with more As) failed to get the scolarships. Instead, it was those who did not that excellent, got the offer. There are also cases of kids with single parents getting turned down.
Always bear in mind, it's just SPM...there's still a long way ahead of u .Don't gloat over the success too early(esp u TS who irked me the most) This post has been edited by lovelyduckling: May 17 2009, 03:08 AM |

TO be fair you have to treat all the good students equally regardless of their family background. Try to think the other way round if a good family background student got 16As in SPM then a less appealing family background student got 8As in SPM the scholarship went to the less appealing one do you call this fair? TS you are really fortunate to get offered by JPA despite your results i understand why lovelyduckling gets irritated by you. Cheerz! QUOTE(yi7117 @ May 17 2009, 03:10 PM) I think the interviewing part has led to the outcome of failing to get the scholarship for most student with good results. There's nothing to be fair in this country as long as the people do not share a common view.Getting scholarship isn't about who is rich or poor it's giving to students that excel in their studies as a reward. Cheerz! Offer letter will be out by next week. Check the website. Today some races special, you call it not fair. Then tomorrow this race no special liao, you say fair, but they say not fair liao ma.. Things would be like that, and will continue until a shared view is attained, which IMHO will not be achieved in 50 years, seeing the mindset of the people now. And every scholarship has different criteria on selecting scholars, you can't just generalise. Interviewing part is said to be 5% (or 10%) which is what I think should not be that significant. Perhaps the marks awarded for academic excellence is the problem. If 16A1 and 12A1 would have the same mark, then it makes not difference. Even if the difference is by 4%, it still does not make it a huge advantage for the 16A1. I do not know how the marking goes. But I think it's wise to revise. Marks can be given, according to the population, not according to the excellence, which I think is what happening for the JPA this time. (What I mean by 'according to population' is that, the best one (let say academic has 60% max), only the best 5 got 60.0, then perhaps next 5 got 59.5, then the worst one of all applicants (can be 8A) will get 0.0 This can really push up the great one, and make the less nice result people lose out. |

QUOTE(yi7117 @ May 17 2009, 03:10 PM) Getting scholarship isn't about who is rich or poor it's giving to students that excel in their studies as a reward. i echo ur opinion.TO be fair you have to treat all the good students equally regardless of their family background. scholarships should not be based on family background. if lets say a person's dad is quite well off, earning like rm 8k per month. but that dad is a very stingy person who wants his son to go the IPTA route. but his son wants to go overseas to study in his dream uni. he scores like 12A1 only to see ah kau , who scored less, get it. there goes his dream. while ah kau waves goodbye from his airplane window or, the quintessential father-forced-me-to-take-up-medicine situation, where the son is threatened by his father to take up medicine , or risk having to fund his studies himself. so, scholarships come in handy to those who wish to defy daddy's wishes. after all, the income can be faked. who bothers to check all the income and shit? juz say you're living with ur granny and ur parents live far away. then granny earns like rm 300 per month. done . scholarship's urs. IMO, for those who are poor, there are always loans, bursaries etc. if people are really poor, shouldnt they be contented with studying locally with a bond? damn... then make the JPA scholarship only for local studies and bond them kao kao, see whether anyone will be fighting for it anymore. sorry if tis is off topic,. but im not gonna post here again. going to b very busy This post has been edited by arsenwagon: May 17 2009, 06:32 PM |

Sure you have to treat all good students equally but when you have limited resources how do you divide the cake? By kicking out rich students or students who scored less As? The point is rich students can still get an education without a scholarship while poor students cannot. If the gov have unlimited budget I'm sure they will gladly reward all students regardless of family income.

What's the point of giving a scholarship to a 7As person but then ditching the 13As person because he is rich. Will you divide a larger portion of your cake to those fat and eat alot but less productive people or those that are hardworking and productive? Don't always use the word POOR as an excuse you should be more privileged in getting a scholarship to oversea. The rich aren't aliens they are also part of the community they deserved the government's reward too. |

But then in your argument you set the standard of "excellent" achievement as having as many As as possible. If I took only 9 subjects and get all As would I be a "lousy" student compared to the ones who got a gazillion As? My argument is that if there are no poor students that are really deserving then by all means give to the rich ones.Tell me then if you have 50+50 rich and poor student but only scholarship for 50, how do you give out the scholarship assuming they get the same number of As? And how can you categorize the poor as fat and eating a lot when in reality they dont eat much? Do you realize that the fact that they are poor may be the reason why some couldn't achieve academically or take as many subjects as the rich? Gee, maybe Uncle Sam should ditch out some stimulus fund to Berkshire Hathaway coz you know, they are so successful and they deserve reward. Or maybe governments should reduce income tax for the rich coz you know......they deserve it. |

My argument is that if there are no poor students that are really deserving then by all means give to the rich ones. I didn't CATEGORIZE the poor as fat I am giving an example to the CAKE thingy that you mentioned. Tell me then if you have 50+50 rich and poor student but only scholarship for 50, how do you give out the scholarship assuming they get the same number of As? And how can you categorize the poor as fat and eating a lot when in reality they dont eat much? Gee, maybe Uncle Sam should ditch out some stimulus fund to Berkshire Hathaway coz you know, they are so successful and they deserve reward. Or maybe governments should reduce income tax for the rich coz you know......they deserve it. I didn't set a BENCHMARK of excellence as stated I made an example of comparison. I didn't say the government has to reduce or increase any shit tax on them what I am stressing out is totally educational scholarship matters. What has taxing rich people to do with scholarships? Read what I wrote again in previous post. You have problem understanding what I wrote. Others can understand so I believe it's not my problem. What I am trying to explain is that students that excel in academic results should be treated equally regardless of their family background. 50+50 even though results are same Interview & Co-co activities have to be taken into consideration too. Of course results come 1st then evaluate other criteria that I have mentioned. Your statement is saying like RICH PEOPLE should not be given care. Yes the fact is that they have all the money in the world to do what they want but then who are you to judge whether they deserve this or that? Others also can say the poor don't deserve the help why shouldn't they work for it? You have to learn to see the whole scenario without being interfered by MONEY & POLITICS. My 2cents not to provoke any fire or whatsoever controversy. Cheerz!! |

ROFLMAO. a really prestigious scholarship will just be based on results and also maybe extra curricular activities. |

QUOTE(yi7117 @ May 18 2009, 01:47 AM) I didn't CATEGORIZE the poor as fat I am giving an example to the CAKE thingy that you mentioned. I hope this is the last post I made out of this issue.I didn't set a BENCHMARK of excellence as stated I made an example of comparison. Cheerz!! No you didn't categorize them as fat but you made an analogy out of it, just like I made a analogy of tax and scholarship. Please understand the difference between analogy and direct comparison. This is the situation: You believe scholarship as a form of reward. A reward should be given to everyone deserving it. I believe scholarship as a form of aid. Which would explain why I think financial background should be included. Neither is wrong. In JPA's case, the mission of JPA's scholarship is to send Malaysian students to top universities so that they can bring much needed foreign expertise back to the country. If they had follow your selection criteria, they would be getting less return from their investment than if they had followed mine. In economics jargon, you have to consider the opportunity cost of your decisions. Some simple economics. You give all 50 scholarship to the poor, you get 100 educated graduates. You give all to the rich, you get 50. Reality is that how scholarships are given is tied to the mission of the sponsor. Is it reward or aid? If reward, then all good for me. And there are scholarships that are purely merit based, something that I do not oppose. If aid, then neither one of us can scream "unfair!". If both, then the sponsor must have some really deep pocket to fulfill both missions. Unfortunately most things in this world is finite, just like the saying goes "you can't have your cake and eat them at the same time. As a counterpoint to your last statement, no I don't see it with money or politics, I see it with pragmatism. And frankly, I'm stumped as to where you get money & politics from since my idea has nothing to do with both. On a lighter note though, congrats to those who got it! QUOTE(chrishung @ May 20 2009, 06:44 AM) No you didn't categorize them as fat but you made a metaphor out of it, just like I made a metaphor of tax reward and scholarship. Please understand the difference between metaphors and direct comparison. And you haven't answered my question on how you're going to award scholarships to the 50+50 rich and poor. The way I think scholarships should be given will get more people educated than your way and yet fair and square. Where do we draw the line between the rich and the poor, and who draws it?Some simple economics. You give all 50 scholarship to the poor, you get 100 educated graduates. You give all to the rich, you get 50 educated. Now how hard is that to understand? Do you realise that I actually AGREE with you in principle on your stand? The difference is my view is an economist view while yours is purely idealist. I have already stated that successful & rich people should be rewarded provided you have enough resources to to reward the poor as well. Where have I said we should totally neglect the rich??? As a counterpoint to your last statement, no I don't see it with money or politics, I see it with pragmatism. A portion of the citizens are rich enough to afford the local university education, but not abroad. Some have accummulated enough money to send their children for overseas education, but do you think they'll easily give up their 30 years of savings to send their children abroad? If they children were to work in Malaysia after graduation, it would take another 30 years to accummulate the same value of money. Do you think parents that saved their money for the raining days actually would give up their savings for education purposes? Do you think the children whom their parents who worked hard and levitated their income to be slightly above the average less deserving a scholarship? So, children of irresponsible parents, or less hardworking are more deserving of the scholarships? What is the aim of the scholarship? Is this a form of accolades or recognitions for academic excellence, or a bursary for students from lower income family? If it is the latter, then it should be called a grant, not a scholarship. Do you think students who studied more than 10 subjects are actually poor (I'm not suggesting otherwise)? So how they afford to pay the exam fees, tuition fees and the transportation cost to tuition centre (if applicable), and books etc? What comes into your mind when students have got impressive non-academic achievements, like ABRSM Piano Grade 8 achievers? Would you be impressed, or would you think 'this is another rich brat applying for scholarship'? I get the point in your message, but the poor wants to be rich, and the rich wants to be richer. Everyone wants a share of it. It is hard to draw a distinction between the poor and the rich. Think about the factors: number of children (Chinese family tends to have a number), cost of living and lifestyle (luxury or no, family holiday to Japan or no), savings (Chinese advocates saving for the raining day), fradulent claim of family income, ... etc. Hence, the best way to decide is by the 'survival of the fittest' method. Of course, I am by no mean suggesting that achieving 9/10 A1s is a ticket to overseas education, which is what the current mindset is. Bear in mind that top scholars in the past have failed to achieve a place in Oxford and Cambridge. Students should not be encouraged to assume more As equates a guarantee to something, because even a 16A1s result is not an admission ticket to top universities, nevermind the graduate job market. Studying more subjects should be motivated by the fact the students have higher aptitude (and hence more time) or for the thirst of knowledge. But in Malaysia, it has been viewed as a way to increase one's competitive edge, and stand up amongst the crowd. So are we talking about the survival of the fittest now? Students took more than 12 subjects because they knew of one thing, to be the survival of the fittest and to secure the scholarships. Whilst I do not think it's a bad idea, it does put a lot of pressure on the younger generation. More and more subjects have to be taken and more exam oriented (since we're talking about paper qualifications). But what about people who achieved less As, or perhaps none. Will they be a social outcast? Ostracised and neglected by these 'elitists'? While the city is getting all the attention, those from the rural area (or less developed town/city) are getting none. They can't afford the education, no good teachers lead to less As, ... etc. The wealth distribution will diverge. So what now? They are even people who connivingly switched schools because they knew it would increase the chances of getting As and scholarship. There's really not a win-win situation, is there? p/s: I hope you realise I am not condemning you. Most of these questions are purely rhetorical, and do have a simple answer. I just want people to realise the issue is not as simple as it seems. This post has been edited by TSOM: May 20 2009, 07:04 PM |

referring to "Do you think students who studied more than 10 subjects are actually poor?", i am totally agree with TSOM's opinion.
Well, what i think is you must surely have the luck on your side to get the scholarship......., besides looking at academic and co-curriculum achievements. |

There's really not a win-win situation, is there? p/s: I hope you realise I am not condemning you. Most of these questions are purely rhetorical, and do have a simple answer. I just want people to realise the issue is not as simple as it seems. 2. Everyone who deserves scholarship should get it regardless of background. I was hoping that someone would realise my stand by now. What I'm saying is that nobody should complain either if the sponsor includes a financial background criteria to whittle down the number. 3. Even if it's a form of grant, you'll want the receipient to be able to do well and so inevitably the merit factor comes in. This point becomes mere semantics. 4. I wouldn't know. And frankly you can't tell since we're talking about college education whose cost is a lot higher than secondary education. And I would be impressed by that fellow with non-academic achievement. Who says anything about calling the kid a rich brat? Fraudulent income claim wouldn't be a problem as long as it's not a fraudulent academic claim because in the end, the deserving student still gets it rich or poor. You need to understand that this is not an argument about giving scholarship to less achieving students. Rather this is a discussion on whether to include financial background selection criteria, which in turn tend to have an effect of giving scholarship to less achieving students. This effect is minimized by having a weighing system that heavily favors academic achievements. The minuscule percentage for financial consideration would mean that you need to be really rich to be at a significant disadvantage against your peers. And when you are super rich it wouldn't really matter how many kids you got anymore, or lifestyles or cost of living. And this would answer question number 1. No rich/poor line needed. The financial criteria would not be a make or break issue although I am unsure if such a requirement even exist for any scholarships. You'd still stand a decent chance even with your parents high income. This balancing act would be the win-win situation. PS: Wondering why nobody is complaining about JPA's civil servant consideration? This post has been edited by chrishung: May 21 2009, 02:25 AM |

After all, a child of civil servants are more likely to serve the government instead of people in the private sector. |

Usually JPA will send computer science students to INTI QUOTE(lazyguy91 @ May 26 2009, 10:02 PM) there will be another enrollment for JPA scholars only, and it will probably be end of June or early of July. but usually, it will be early of July, so you will be called as July 2009 batch |

Aw, I miss him... erm...u r ex-inti students???whos mr yap??? actuali i'm bit disappointed to gt SAM, coz i wish to gt AUP, save time n 1 more reason is dat i heard dat SAM holders need to compete vf others in order to gt into aus uni, coz there r lots of excellent SAM holders all around the world... however, i'm satisfied though, n wl do my best for sure This post has been edited by qiqi91: Jun 1 2009, 04:05 PM |

In the application form, you choose the course yourself. I think jpa only choose colleges for applicants.

Yea JPA chooses the college in Malaysia for you if you are in there overseas degree program. You have quie alot of liberty to choose which college or university you want to go through after you have completed your preparatory or initial years in Malaysia.Another thing is the foreign country which you further your studies in. You get to choose which country you want. The majority of successful applicants get their country of choice. However there are a handful who don't. |

I think you are probably misinformed. I am a JPA scholar and we don't get to choose which country to go to for a particular subject.

I went to General Hospital(seremban) today. guess what, the cost for the medical check up is RM165 and need to wait like hell.
Then i went to private Diagnostic Centre, well, the charges are RM210. And it only takes a week for everything(results). Although is kinda risky but saves me time man! and no need go GH see people's(at counter) "face". |

On a side note, you should request for an account book as it is easier to keep track of your balances using it and when there is any problems with your accounts, the account book is a valuable ID of you as the account holder and speeds things up. |

i dont think you give them(jpa) a photostat copy of an ATM card. Instead, you should just hand them a copy of SA Information Inquiry(ask from bank, they will print for you)

I received my letter yesterday, I applied for medicine. I will be doing 18 months of Australian Matriculation in Sunway College and then 5 years in New Zealand. Well, I am here trying to look for my future classmates
So, any future classmates out here? It would be nice to know some people going to Sunway together with me before I leave. This post has been edited by gabriellejee: Jun 5 2009, 12:36 AM |
