yup true, some old school tips how to make our windows runs a bit faster which I am always do in XP
-1st boot in bios set back to boot from HD or C, from floppy or CDROM which some ppl might ignore this
- Disable some start up programs which we seldom use in msconfig
- Set network ID user to standalone user, default will be 2 administrators
- disable some running services such as window's background auto update and security center --ehem--
- once in the while run unused registry cleaner to clean clogging orphan registries
- not to mention disk cleanup and fragmentation
- to add here some suggestions from edmin and other, eliminating the pagefile

Need for more? fork out all the notes from the pocket and buy an I7 or phenom!

Every time when we installed and run programs, keys pressed, uninstalled it or we installed any other applications, without known to us these programs create registries, cache files, temp files or .dll etc etc. They remained there even we already uninstalled the main applications and those remaining files we consider junks already, they may piled up sometimes into large size. Put on these way, when we cutting down a tree, only a tree itself dies but not it's root, and we need something to remove it.

I tried CCleaner, but still prefer the old RegCleaner by Jouni Vuoro. Now he sold these software to some commercial com but we still can get the old free version. It is old but powerful utility.

@edmin,i found that we do not need to delete pagefile.sys manually. The file will disappear after you select no paging file and reboot.

I am return back to XP from vista, IMO vista just performs 'looking good' but XP in overall does better. Win7 is currently installed and running at my work place desktop, still in look, wait and see before decided to install it in my pc at home.

Win 7 is very much better in my opinion. I have also installed a copy on my rig. CPU calculation still manage to get 4.4 out of 7.9.
