The version I heard from Maxis is, they will not block the iphone, but every iphone purchased from Maxis is uniquely tied to the original owner, so is the warranty. Meaning, buying a Maxis iphone from others will be as good as buying an iphone without warranty. With the warranty card, one can still send in for repair, but it will be chargeable.

those who are interested to know how is it like for an iPhone to be blocked via the IMEI method, you can read it from here

Well, it is a double edged sword.

Do not know whether it is a good thing or not that Malaysia has not implemented blocking mobile phones by invoking IMEI......yet.

At the risk of splitting hair, I have something to say to that.

If there is no breach of any agreement between original owner and Maxis or no laws are broken (like the phone in question is stolen), the latter has to honour their end of the bargain which is to entertain any request for service, even if the unit is brought in not by the original owner.

There are so many scenarios I can cite that original owners may not be the intended users genuinely, like one buying as a present for someone. Maxis will not turn down the sale if told this from the outset, I am sure.

So, constitutionally speaking, again for want of a better word, Maxis has to give those cases their contractual attention.

Either your friend of yours got a demo unit from maxis or its just not the retail iPhone

i think he means the maxis app which takes you to the maxis store. I can confirm there's one on every maxis unit. I've bought 2, both also got.

Just to add on to what prasys has mentioned, no Maxis iPhones has that icon embedded into the iPhone firmware/system. The Maxis icon is actually myMaxis WAP Portal which we can be added easily to our homescreen.

Launch Safari
Type http://iphone.maxis.com.my
Click the + to add to homescreen
Maxis icon will be added to the homescreen.

It doesn't come with mine. I did not ask Maxis rep to activate and setup my iPhone. I guess they didn't include the shortcut to their home page. However there is in my Bookmarks (guess Carrier 3.1 settings did that)

Just came back from Bangkok and placed a local Thai sim (DTAC) into my Maxis 3G iPhone. No problems or issues at all.

seeing that you are new here, i will give in this time.

jailbreaking and software unlock are completely two different things (however they may be related in regards to yellowsn0w)

jailbreaking allows you to introduce foreign (but desirable) elements to your iPhone. having said that, since the so-called elements are foreign, they are not originally part of the iPhone. in another word, jailbreaking will void your warranty IF it is found to have been jailbroken before.

maxis iPhones are officially unlocked and therefore you don't need any hocus pocus unlocking methods (hardware - sim card adapters and sofware - yellowsn0w).

Nokia2003 has explained it well. Just to add , in Malaysia - all phones are unlocked. It must be sold unlocked. That's the law here in Malaysia. Carriers aren't allowed to sell locked phones in the market. These are the reason why our phones are expensive as opposed to folks in lets say USA !

Jailbreaking on the other hand is actually patching some of apple's code in order to install 3rd party hacks and stuff. It takes your iPhone to a new level !. Oh yeah it voids your warranty !

actually maxis can't even blocked the phone. Cuz Maxis only has a authorized on SIM card and can blocked the sim card only...not the phone. My friends using maxis iphone for 1 month then not pay the bills and guess what, maxis blocked only the sim and not the phone. If you jailbreak your iphone, even it is from maxis you will get no signal after all. you need to use an ultrasn0w for unlock it unless your phone is official unlock from apple™ it self.
