well i'm not sure how things typically work for maxis at the moment.

but it is common for telcos here (australian and uk) to lock and bar stolen phones immediately if they have been reported.

since it is feasible over here, i don't see why maxis will not be able to implement it (GSM networks do share a similar trait afterall).

the only difference here is (using the "counter boys" theory; pardon my derogatory slur), maxis could justify their actions by saying that these maxis units were "stolen" from them since they were only meant to be sold with contracts.

edited: darn it! i forgot to add a disclaimer to my statement. but yeah, the above statement is merely an opinion by myself and could be of a speculative nature and must be taken with a pinch of salt

Added on April 23, 2009, 2:22 pmwell not sure if this link will actually work on other phones other than australia bound ones, but no harm sharing i guess.

This whole episode started with chinamobile highlighting certain irregularities. If you read from there, you would comprehend the concern.

Btw, I know Maxis' sets are unlocked but we are talking about them being 'blocked' by 'invoking' the IMEI and thus disabling the iPhone itself which can be done for all phones.

mate, i reckon that we should continue here, since it is a dedicated thread to this isssue.

oh yeah, the units provided by maxis for training/exhibition purposes, do not carry the same model/product number.

i have highlighted that fact before on the maxis launching thread.

nokia, but the rests of the end users sets are?

they ought to be, to conform with the list on the apple website.

anyway these so-called training/exhibition units, typically have pre-loaded games. songs, contacts, videos et cetera for very obvious reasons.

Sound logic too.. But then, since the TS is ken in repairing iphone3G(hardware/software). I believe he knows how to differentiate the origin of these iphone b4 starting this thread .. Right?

Added on April 23, 2009, 5:09 pmI certainly don't think that Apple makes thing so complicated untill the need of a special "demo unit" for Maxis staff for the launch/demo.. As, iphone3G is launched about 1-2 years ago before reaching Malaysia..

errr think again then.

can i request maxis not to jailbreak or software unlock the iphone when i buy it from them?
any difference on which method they use to unlock the phone?
so which unlocked maxis iphone we should buy?
*
seeing that you are new here, i will give in this time.

jailbreaking and software unlock are completely two different things (however they may be related in regards to yellowsn0w)

jailbreaking allows you to introduce foreign (but desirable) elements to your iPhone. having said that, since the so-called elements are foreign, they are not originally part of the iPhone. in another word, jailbreaking will void your warranty IF it is found to have been jailbroken before.

maxis iPhones are officially unlocked and therefore you don't need any hocus pocus unlocking methods (hardware - sim card adapters and sofware - yellowsn0w).

"If you jailbreak your iphone, even it is from maxis you will get no signal after all. you need to use an ultrasn0w for unlock it unless your phone is official unlock from appleā„¢ it self."

I actually do not want to stoop to your level debating with someone who does not know half of what he is talking about. But for the good of the community here, especially those who do not know very much about the iPhone yet, I am taking it upon myself to rectify your unilaterally wrong comments. Before that, do us all a favour, read first to find out more before passing comments which not only mislead people but also make you a clown as mentioned hereinabove.

Jaibreaking is a totally different process from unlocking and it does not affect the phone when it is an unlocked unit. And Maxis dishes out only offiially unlocked sets as required by law.
