Thanks for the link. I will study it.
I guess one more thing to note is also the side space available for the floorstanders. If the width is only 11.5' and then putting up 100" screen will almost leave no space for the front speakers.
*
Remember when we talk about screen size it is diagonal size. So 100" screen is only about 7.3' wide (excluding border). This leaves you with about 2.1' on each side for the speakers.

But yes, you have to factor in the side space when choosing screen size. Particularly if you have a narrow room. One way out is to put all front speakers below the screen if you don't have enough wall width.

What size screen would sifu's here recommend for a 8.5' x 16' room?
Thinking of renovating my kids' drum  cum store room into a dedicated HT room.
I was thinking of a 90" diagonal screen.
Would this be too big? Would 80" be better?
Thanks in advance.

How far are you planning to sit away from the screen?

About 12' to 13' away.

Do screens come in fixed sizes or can they be customized?
*
90" screen at 12' is 30.5 deg FOV. So it's an ok size. As pointed out above, your only concern is the side space left since your room is quite narrow.

Most ready made screens come in fixed sizes. 92" is quite common.

How high up from the floor must the lower edge of the screen be?

My tallest speaker is the SVS cyclinder which stands at ~38" (incl Subdude)
The Epos 303 is about 36" tall incl the stand/plinth.

If using a 90" screen,  the width is  6.5', leaving about 1' on each side. Just nice I think as the Epos are narrow speakers.
*
Refer to this link: http://myhometheater.homestead.com/Verticalviewing.html

In an ideal situation the middle of your screen = eye level. But if your eye level is 40" high, it means the bottom of your 90" screen is about 16"-18" off the floor. Doesn't leave much room for speakers.

If you see the link, max allowance is 15 deg angle to the top of the screen. If you use this means your 90" screen lower edge would be about 32"-34" above the floor. This is max. To reduce neck strain you can go lower of course.

guess I will have to settle for a smaller screen to accommodate the front speakers and the sub.
What is the next smaller size available?
*
Next smaller size is around 82" or 84".

jchong,

May I ask you again what is the IDEAL screen size for 11.3' width wall with viewing distance at 12'?? I am in dilemma to choose between 80" & 90" screen. I would love to have 90" size which leaves enuf side space of 2', but I am worried too that 90" & view from 12' can be uncomfortable. What do you choose if you were me...
In dilemma....
*
For a viewing distance of 12' the min recommended size is 89" (this gives you the 30-deg FOV). So between 80" or 90" I'd definitely go for 90". This would give you a more 'cinematic' experience.

FYI, I'm using 106" screen from 13' distance (my FOV is 33-deg)

Wow, you say minimum is 89" so it means 80" will be too small. I would give it a try, thanks.
Hopefully the fix screen of 90" with the side frame will leave me min of 2" for my front speakers & also the beast SVS pc-12plus which I plan to put left side in the middle of the room...

Try to mark out the screen size on your wall. You can use masking tape, elsewhere others suggest using a bedsheet. Then at least you can visualise the size of the screen and you can see how the other speakers and your sub fit in.

Good rant terranova.

The retail scene in general in Malaysia can do with a lot of improvement. The system here isn't consumer oriented.

Thanks for ur reply, is there any av shop that u can recommend to me in johor? i have no idea at all...... any suggestion form other sifus too?

bout the location, if i place my projector on the 4500mm wall, means tat i need to place my sofas near the door..... hmm.... dunno how to design my av room...

at 1st i think of putting the projector on the wall beside the door.  any pro n con between these 2 option?

thanks.

A lot of us also aren't experts in designing an AV room, but we just read up and research. You should also do the same. You're gonna invest thousands into your room and equipment, so invest some time also in the knowledge.

It's good to know the basics so you can decide what you want to do. There are many ways to design a room. Even if you get an AV shop to help you do it, you need to be able to double check their advice (hey not all AV shops are experts either and you don't want them to give you wrong advice).

Anyway, my quick suggestions:

1. Place screen on the 4500mm wall.
2. Projector is towards the 3200mm wall. Check on your screen size and projector type to decide how far away to place your projector. Decide on ceiling mount or shelf mount.
3. Your sofa doesn't have to be right against the 3200mm wall. Can be 2-3' away from that wall (better for listening experience also). This still allows your door to open a bit. If your door is going to be a problem, consider changing to sliding door.

You have to look back at logit's postings here (esp about subwoofers) to get the history

Not only language issue but totally unrealistic expectations for the sub (like what htkaki mentioned above). I think once he also talked like he had very high budget, like can afford top end elite subs...

I remembered they sound quite decent for movies with a Yamaha amp but music only so-so. The huge bass is good enough that you don't really need a sub.
*
Even if you have capable speakers with good bass, having a sub can be beneficial especially for movies.

1. For movies the bass is normally in the .1 LFE channel which goes to the sub. If you don't have a sub, your AVR must have some way to redirect the .1 LFE channel to the main speakers. Otherwise you won't be getting the bass effects from the LFE channel.

2. Delivering powerful bass needs good amp power. Even if your speakers can go low, you need a matching powerful amp in order to push your speakers to produce that powerful bass. Having a separate sub means you free up amp power to drive the speakers.

3. Even if your speakers can go low, can it go as low as a sub? Or can it produce the same quantity/quality of bass as a sub?

Yes, it struggles to keep up with the mighty SVS.
It's 4 ohm and bi-amped but after the room treatment with the bass trap, it does sound better.
The overpowering bass really drowns it out sometimes #*waiting for the incoming poison@#*.
*
It's a matter of setting and loudness whether your sub will overpower the mains.

If you run the sub hotter than the mains then it might drown out the mains. Another possibility is if you listen very loud and your speakers cannot pump out as much volume as the sub.

I thought it's best to place sub at corner? no? hmm.gif

Corners are best for the most gain since the sub is near 2 boundaries. But it might sound too boomy.
