QUOTE(klimal @ May 27 2012, 10:45 PM) Had chance to experience 11.2 system with 3 stereo power amps and a 4311, and dual Rythmik FV15HP. Thank you for hosting jchong and I . FOTP plane roll was incredible Thanks to BOTBOTCHAI's friend for showing his system. He's got a lot of speakers and equipment in the hall! The dual FV15HP puts out a lot of energy in his lounge. There are still one or two areas for improvement but this is part and parcel of this hobby

I'm glad they enjoyed themselves. Those who have not experienced a well setup sub system will have their ears opened and balls shaken

Personally I have mixed feelings about going front wide, front high, DSX, etc. This is because the original mix in the bluray is being artificially manipulated.
If the bluray soundtrack is 5.1 then it's mixed and designed to be played back by a pair of fronts, a center and a pair of surrounds. If it is 7.1 then add another pair of rear surrounds.
If you can, try to optimize your 5.1 or 7.1 setup first so as to reproduce how the soundtrack was mixed.
Just my 2 sen.

QUOTE(eugenecctan @ Jun 16 2012, 10:26 PM) I have a few questions, 1st, how to choose a suitable speakers for my current system. Currently I am using series 3 speakers from Pioneer, 6 ohms. Is it a must to use back 6 ohms speakers? If you stick to 6 or 8 ohm speakers should be fine. Most AVRs can drive those without problem.

Probably following the Dolby 7.1 setup is better than THX. You can visit Dolby's website to check.

QUOTE(siauann @ Jun 28 2012, 04:38 PM) how do u guys hide the surround speaker cables normally? One way is to route the surround cables through the plaster ceiling then only drop down near the speakers. For that short exposed section you can cover with white casing.

QUOTE(siauann @ Jun 30 2012, 10:26 AM) when routing through the plaster ceiling, is it required to pass though inside a pvc piping just like what our electrical wiring? or can just exposed and fly through the plaster ceiling I don't think PVC piping is necessary.

QUOTE(eugenecctan @ Jul 17 2012, 02:38 PM) I am looking for speaker stand also, but if surround back and surround side speakers need to place 2 or 3 feet above the front speakers. Then I will need at least 50 inches speaker stand. :S There's a shop in Amcorp where they can make stands (wooden). Can make 4' or 4.5' for you but it won't be cheap.

QUOTE(eugenecctan @ Jul 17 2012, 04:11 PM) Thanks, that is why I were asking previously, whether we can use front speakers as surround speakers, then just them put on top of a 24 inches stand, even better than buying a surround speakers and thinking how to place it... You can use almost any speaker as surround speakers. If you want to use a floorstander also can. Anyway, even if you want to use bookshelf speakers as surround, you might be able to use 24" or 30" stand. There is some debate about proper height for surround speakers - some say use it at ear level and others say 2' - 3' above ear level.

QUOTE(eugenecctan @ Jul 18 2012, 01:52 PM) Thanks for your suggestion, Just wondering, why it is recommended to place surround speakers at ear level or above, why not below? Maybe at floor? If you put at floor level then chances are the sound may be blocked by furniture, etc.

QUOTE(Kelv @ Jul 17 2012, 11:51 PM) I miscalculated the room size. It's around 8.5ft x 13.5ft only. The shorter wall, one side has door, another side has windows. I probably getting 46" TV. Such a small room, I am wondering how to position the seat, TV and speakers actually. Any tips? Just use the standard positioning (only thing is subject to your door and windows). If have drawing of the room would be easier to advise.

In your case, the most practical would be as you have drawn it.
If you put the LCD against the wall and seat against the other wall it is ok because your LCD size is 46".
U can put in 5.1 if you wish to.

QUOTE(Kelv @ Jul 23 2012, 01:39 PM) Thanks for the reply. So, I assume the surround speaker also against the wall right behind/beside my seat then. U can also put the surround speakers on stands on the left/right side of your seat. Or hang them on the wall. QUOTE Perhaps will just put curtain/blinder that able to cut out all the light. The windows still need to be open if not watching movie. Yes that is another option. Just calculate where is your seat position to see what is the distance to TV. For the seat you plan 2-seater or 3-seater?

QUOTE(siauann @ Jul 24 2012, 09:32 AM) how high should i place my surround speakers? same level as front speakers? or can i just hang it up high close to ceiling level? IMO ceiling height is too high. The normal recommendation is ear level up to 2'-3' above ear level.

QUOTE(siauann @ Jul 24 2012, 10:36 AM) if i mount 1' - 2' below ceiling level and make a slight projection down to the seating area will it be ok? You mean you will angle down to aim at ear level? That would be better.

QUOTE(eugenecctan @ Aug 1 2012, 05:00 PM) How to match speakers between center and front speakers? According to their power and frequency range? In general get the center speaker from the same brand and series as your front speakers. The manufacturer would have matched them.

QUOTE(tallrice @ Sep 7 2012, 05:44 AM) i want to ask is that AVR is equal to amplifier? i went to ask some info at butterworth and plan to setup my new house HT... personally i thought AVR isnt same as amplifier and i would like to connect player to AVR then to pre-amp and last to amp connect to speaker... is this the right setup? but the person told me AVR is sufficient coz AVR=amp and normal amplifier doesnt have surround sound feature... planning to conceal wire first coz insufficient moneh! beginner here The AVR includes the pre-amp and multi-channel amplifier, so it is not necessary for you to buy separate pre-amp and amp. So you connect player to AVR and AVR to speakers.
