Hi there. 2.4 GHZ with 4GB ram. If install Windows 7 64bit will it make the Mac become slower and lagging?
*
bootcamp? no lah. it would perform like any other 2.4Ghz 4gb RAM computer would

what would make it slow is if u have very little free hard drive space left

oic. well since you'll be sharing resources then yes, it'll be a bit slower. im not sure how slow though, im using the same specs but only on win7 32-bit, runs fine for what i do

if u have a software that specifically needs 64-bit or implies that it needs at least 4gb ram, then bootcamp would be a better choice.

going to buy Parallels Desktop and install to my iMac, but i wan to ask that do i oso need to get a windows os installation disc separately or this Parallels Desktop itself comes with windows os inside?
*
well parallels desktop is not a microsoft product, so yes u need to separately get windows

PD is a software to install another OS on ur mac.. not necessarily windows

QUOTE(amand83 @ Feb 15 2011, 12:13 PM)
hi all.

this is amanda.

i would like to install parallel d. to my macbook pro, but my machine is bought for about three years, never upgrade, nothing, version 10.5.8.
original spec:
processor 2.4GHZ intel core 2 duo, memory 2GB 667mhz ddr2 SDRAM .. etc.

1. so, should i upgrade it and what should i upgrade before install parallel d.?

2. the main reason is to run Autocad window on it, although there is a new launch for Autocad Mac and i actually installed autocad mac (student version- from lecturer); still i get used to autocad window as mac version is slightly different. basically i use the desktop (non mac but customized pc from IT agent) at home for autocad, 3d max; but it is more convenient if i could do autocad work with a mobile laptop.
kindly pm me if you could advise me in detail. (eg. how to get parallel d. besides buying online and where should i go to upgrade the macbook)
appreciate your reply. thank you.  biggrin.gif

1. not upgrading will be fine, but if u can, upgrade ur RAM to 2x2gb. u can feel the performance improvement. u can buy RAMs at normal pc shops n normally they can help u install, so bring ur mbp along

2. most apple resellers do sell the parallel desktop dvd. dont forget u need a copy of windows too, most PC shops should have them. a 32-bit one should be enough.

for gaming, or any programs that need a lot of computing power, boot camp is the solution. simple as that

parallels or fusion is for convenience. the performance of the latest versions are much better compared to the older ones, but can never ever beat performance of boot camp. just remember like that

but i imagine running windows from ext hdd would be really slow, so no point gaming like that. why dont u just upgrade ur hdd?

yeah i dont think boot camp allows windows to be stored on an external drive. im sure there's a workaround somehow, just that i think it's pretty stupid to do that ;p

from what i've read, changing the size is possible but need 3rd party software like gparted. never tried it myself

Hello smile.gif i would like to ask, is it possible to run parallels on an external hard disk? Has anyone done it yet? Coz i would like to preserve as much disk space on my laptop as possible. Thx.

should be possible, but slow. i dont think thats a good idea. maybe try to find alternative software?

my MBP have the same spec as u but i dont get any lag in win7 fusion3. i suspect pd6 performance should be better. maybe can try increase the RAM for pd6 to 2gb or so. should be somewhere in the settings

QUOTE(llsphinxll @ Jul 2 2011, 02:46 AM)
Hey guys,

I recently purchased the Windows 7 Ultimate for my mbp (currently running on 10.6.8). Tried installing the windows using bootcamp assistant. After pressing 'Start Installation', the computer restarts and a black screen comes out stating "No bootable device. Please insert disc and press any key".

I tried selecting the installation disc as the startup disc but the mbp doesnt seem to identify the disc during start up. Any advice or instructions on how to install windows on my mbp would be much appreciated.

p/s: Sorry mod if this topic has been made before. Relocation of this topic to appropriate thread would be fine. Cheers! notworthy.gif

hm u can try launching boot camp assistant again and it should directly take u to a page with a Start installation button. try it again if u havent

did the partition process ran fine? u should have a 'BOOTCAMP' partition

does pd6 actually spoils the computer??
some fellar from smack in bangsar, a apple store in tropicana mall oso said that pd6 will spoil the processor esp using prog like corel draw
is that true
*
lol that's ridiculous. just remember being an apple reseller staff doesnt necessarily mean that person knows a lot about macs. dont be surprised if some dont even know how to use one

Harlow. I have tried Parallels Desktop 6 trial for few weeks. Quite satisfied. May i ask how much a retail box cost in Malaysia? And how long is the membership? Is it only valid to one Mac? Can i use it for the iMac that i want to purchase in the future?
*
here you go: http://store.apple.com/my/product/H2481Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY

it's not a membership. it's a one time pay to get 1 licence of the software. u can use it as long as u want, as long as it's version 6. if got version 7, mebe u can just get a discount to upgrade.

yes u can use for ur imac in the future

Hi all,
Anyway to install window 7 direct to apple laptop without going through 3rd party platform like bootcamp?
*
bootcamp is not 3rd party tongue.gif

i suppose u can use disk utility to manually partition the drive urself. set it to Master Boot Record. after partitioning, insert ur windows DVD, reboot and press and hold down C before the mac chime to boot from the windows DVD. process as how you would on a normal PC. just make sure not to format ur macintosh HD partition

bootcamp assistant software simply does all that automatically. never tried myself lah but i dont see why i wont work. why dont u want to use bootcamp anyway?
