Section G: Purchasing from Resellers and Online Storehttp://channelprograms.apple.com/channel/http://www.apple.com/my/buy/reseller/*Below is just a simple guideline to help understand the different Resellers.

A big thank you to
ahblu3 for taking time in explaining the difference on Reseller and Online Store. Cheers
1. Reseller:
Basically you get the following advantages from Apple Reseller:
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
- Periodically/Monthly Promotions
- Trade-in accepted
- Membership
- Free basic workshop
- Advice from staffs (Machines claims it as 'Expert Advice')
- After sales service (This is the most controversial part of Malaysia's Reseller)
- On-the-spot product check/identification before you cash and carry
- 0% interest Installment payment plan with credit card (depends on Bank)
- Free delivery (restricted area coverage, and I personally think this feature is somewhat useless. Hello, you are not buying furniture, aren't you? Everyone hope to get their items immediately and happily back to home.)
- 0 waiting time (if stock is available)
- Try-before-you-buy: Display-item on the shops for hands-on experience.
- Discount on accessories
2. Online Store:
Malaysia Apple Online Store. While there are a lot of critics regarding Reseller in Malaysia and the lack of official Apple Store in Malaysia, Apple breaks the ground and introduce the Apple Online Store in Malaysia.
The main advantages of getting your beloved Macs from the Online Store:
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
- Free shipping for items above RM250, deliver to your door step, almost anywhere in Malaysia, as long as the courier company can reach you.
- Free engraving on iPods
- Students or teachers get education discount
- Discount on iWork when purchase with a Mac
- ACPP auto-enroll when purchase with a Mac
- Buy it anytime, anywhere, 24/7
- Accept Credit Cards and Bank Wire Transfer
- Official Apple Promotions (mostly during special occasion, eg. Free Gift Wrapping during Valentine's Day)
3. Price Comparison:Ok, actually things are simple here. The advantages of one, are the disadvantages of another.
Here I only discuss about everybody's main concern:
PRICE.Previously I had misunderstood the true meaning of education discount offered by the online store.
I thought that only the Mac itself is entitled to the discount.
But the real thing is, most of the products (exclude iPods and accessories) do have discount but with different rates! Including optional customizing parts!
For instance, I make 2 examples of the Education Discount:
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
1. iMac 24" 2.66GHz
Retail price................: RM 5599 | Education discount price : RM 5199
Optional configuration :
1TB HDD.....................: RM 360 |: RM 324
8GB RAM...................: RM 3590 |: RM 3231
ACPP...........................: RM 599 |: RM 479
iWork'09 (1user).........: RM 199 |: RM 169
2. MacBook 13" 2.0GHz
Retail price:................: RM 4799 | Education discount price: RM 4599
Optional configuration:
320GB HDD.................: RM 560 |: RM 504
4GB RAM.....................: RM 359 |: RM 323
ACPP...........................: RM 849 | : RM 679
Apple Cinema Display.: RM 3599 |: RM 3199
You do the maths. How much you have save? For iMac, you can also opt for the Keyboard with numeric keypad free of charge (user FenomX said Machines charge him RM168 for the keyboard exchange)
Of course, the above advantage only applies to those who are qualify to entitle for the discount. But I suppose it is easy to be eligible.

4. Personal Experience:» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
- As told above, I personally support Online Store. I purchased my MacBook Aluminum 2.0GHz with iPod touch 2nd Gen 8GB at Germany Apple Online Store thru the Back to school promotion with 125EURO rebate + education discount, last year when the new MB launched. (Unfortunately it's still more expensive than M'sia due to 19% VAT here in Germany)
- As of Malaysia Apple Online Store, I purchased an iPod Nano 4th Gen 8GB thru it, as a birthday gift for my sister in Sabah. Due to CNY holiday earlier this year, the item took around 2 weeks to arrive (From Shenzhen to Sabah) includes the time in which I wire transfer the payment to Apple Malaysia bank account and for them to review the payment. Courier Company delivered the item to my sister on the 3rd day of CNY, which is the exact date of my sis birthday. They call before delivery to make sure you are at home.
- In my opinion, in the sense of being a smart consumer, take the advantages of a Reseller but buy from Online store if eligible for the education discount. For instance, visit the reseller shop to view your target Mac, do some hands-on testing, look at the real thing, compare promotions among different reseller (maybe different freebies, mouse pad or keyboard cover, you want?), ask staffs for some basic questions (you don't need to ask if you googled enough, some of them don't even own a Mac), and then go home, buy it online.
- Of course, as I mentioned before in other thread, the point that a reseller provide 0% interest installment in conjunction with certain bank credit cards (eg. Maybank) do really attracts consumer to buy from them. Not everybody can pay several thousands RM in one go. So with the easy payment plan they also can own a Mac like others.
- Membership discount on accessories may sound attractive, but eBay items are more cheaper. I get my Wireless Mighty Mouse from UK eBay. Price including Shipping cost are far more cheaper than retail price. Same quality, same genuine product. But of course, buying items on eBay are quite risky if you are unfortunate.
- Sorry if I'm too biased, as I had bad experience with Reseller before. Just sharing the reality side.
May the Mac always be with you. Good luck to all Mac prospective users. Be a wise consumer, don't let your hard earn cash being suck by some particular scammer-alike Reseller. No offense.

Users review on buying thru Apple Online Store http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/842060/By nimrod323: i just purchased one thru edu pricing yesterday,my experience is never use bank transfer it'll be awfully slow, you cant use maybank debit card either cause its only meant for physical swipes not for online purchase. i used public bank debit card, it works normally the item should be arriving by 4-5 days make sure you purchase before 3 to allow for on the spot processing. Use CC also.
By boundaries: bought my 24" imac last month from apple store... was great on it. is like it know what it does for me. just like i can do everything with it except playing my games that is built for windows. *sigh* back to the experience i got from purchasing from the online store is that they use DHL (Dua Hari Lambat) and the funny thing is that the order is from malaysia to singapore but the item was delivered from shang hai and the expected delivery date was late for 2 days... sigh... DHL claims it got stuck in customs n bla bla. call up to apple store, they give me a RM65 refund due to it's late and the best part, i went to pickup my imac from DHL warehouse in Glenmarie at 3am! but i still love my mac now.. hahahha
By friends: I'm not sure about Mac products shipment. But lately I ordered iPod, it was came from SuZhou, China. When you check the DHL shipment Tracking (login your Apple account), you will know where your order is coming from.
