I take Evening Primrose Oil. Natural remedy. I do try to take it daily and during the period pain period, I sometimes take 2 instead of one. Then the pain will lessen but the bloating feeling may still be there.

Cheap bottles will do provided it's from a reliable source. I think the cheapest in the market is either from 21st Century or Cosway. These were from my student days. It was good enough and no side effects.

Plus, my skin glowed and my hair shinier. smile.gif

Try to see a doctor, make sure it's not another underlying symptom such as endometriosis.

Period cramps are different for every girl - some of us experience painful/unbearable pain, some experience constant minor cramps that makes us uncomfortable for days before/after period.

One thing tho - girls, don't simply take 2-3 tablets of Panadol everytime there's a cramp. Those are not candies that can be taken on whim. I myself use a towel soak in hot water (then squeezed<--for lack of other words-- the towel dry) and lay it on my stomach while lying down.

It helps a bit for me

Ponstan is quite commanly used for acute period pain. It stops the pain relatively quickly but should not be used on a long term basis.. You should not take it if you have gastric problems. EPO (Evening Primrose Oil) works from person to person. I guess there's no harm in trying EPO because there have been many successful cases. However you must have the committment to take it on a daily basis otherwise it's very likely that it will not work. EPO is quite safe to take, but there are some girls who do complain that they put on some weight ever since they started on EPO.

I used to take Ponstan but then I have another side effect : gas strict and stomach pains, rather than pain from the womb. That's why I switch to Evening Primpose Oil (EPO).

Any painkiller in the market will cause your stomach to bleed. And blood clots flying around in my body is something that I really really want to reduce. One can argue that menses also may yield blood clots but that's something I can't stop. Taking painkillers I can.

The Ginger soup does help because Ginger will heat up the body. Concept of hot food and cold food (chinese medicine thinking). It's a temporary relief but it does work. Just need to prepare a lot of it. Or, you can just put the ginger with hot water and drink it (home-made ginger tea). You can sweeten it with honey I guess.

There are painkillers that do not cause stomach bleeds, but they are not applicable here, hence I will not eloborate much.

Painkillers, such as NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti Inflamatory Drugs) will not usually cause stomach bleeds unless you already have a pre-existing condition (such as gastric) or you've been taking it on a long term basis or an overdose or taking other medications that would increase the risks of bleeding (such as warfarin). However, gastric pains is common and if one does experience this side-effect, he/she should stop taking this medication and seek professional help.

By saying "blood clots flying around in my body" I assume you mean an embolism caused by blood clots which is secondary to gastro-intestinal bleeding? Correct me if I'm wrong but this is the first time I've heard of such a complication arising from a GI-bleed. Doctors who hang out here, any comments?

Hmm...I'm probably generalizing a bit too much but having read up about how blood clots can cause problems in a female womb due to menses, I'm assuming that similar situations can happen in the stomach. Probably a bad assumption tbh.

Now more research to do.

some say dun drink cold water and you will notice that the period pain is a lot lessened. personally...i try not to take so much cold drinks 1 week before the period la. thats if i remember. but i've been taking "bak foong yuen" from Eu Yan Sang for a few mths ledi....seems to help abit in the cramping.

you can give it a try. just an option if u would wanna reduce the intake of pain killers.

i read online on period cramps...it says that to take some pain killers a few days before the period starts. supposed to help reduce the pain apparently.

Wow, if take Ponstan for period cramps means the pain is quite serious already. I've experience very bad pain but not extreme pain though.

Sometimes it's frustrating when guy friends tease us girls for taking MC for period cramps. They just don't know the pain we go through sometimes. sweat.gif

You're correct. Men will not understand the pain that women go through when they menstruate or during childbirth. Having said that for insensitive guys like that, beckon them over. Ask them to come really close because you would like to show them something. As they approach with their guard down, knee them in the 'nads - HARD and say the pain women go through is worse than that.

While he's gasping for air probably uttering a silent scream - kick one more time for good measure.

The funny thing about men is that they laff at many things that females go through.

But ask them to pick up a tampon or a sanitary pad place in front of them and they all quiet down completely. It's like a taboo thing. Haha!

Geez.. I can't even take Ponstan or Panadol. Sometimes really can pengsan >.< So stopped taking soft drinks, cold drinks & sour food 1 week before (Coca-Cola is the worst). Haven't found a cure though. I did discover that pressing certain spots on the back provides temporary relief. Long enough to fall asleep lah. Or sometimes I stay up for a couple of hours after the cramps start (usually on first night) then only sleep. Cos for me, it hurts more when I'm lying down

TS, I used to suffer menstrual pain monthly too. I took EPO but it didnt help much. So, I stopped taking cold drinks (especially cincau, coke and watermelon juice) and have been exercising regularly. I have not been having awful menstrual ache since then. I drink warm water nowadays too and it reduces the pain significantly.

so many girls out there just like me... used to have period pain until cannot do anything at all, have to stay in bed.

Nowadays I jaga my eating habits 1 week before period - no 'cooling' fruits, no crabs, no heaty stuff (including herbal soup) and plenty of milk. These are my own 'trial and error' diet la, not really have scientific reason for it, but my pain is lesser now.

First think should go for check-up with gynae if you haven't because there are certain things to look out for like endometriosis. One sign is that your period cramps get increasingly painful as you age.

How old are you? How long has it been since puberty? If it's not been long.. then it's not really serious. But to me, it sounds quite complicated. Honestly, visit an O&G specialist. Endometriosis might be the cause, might. There's plenty of others to elaborate, so it's best you visit the doc. Doc will probably provide you some hormonal pills to get you through this. Hopefully it works, but almost certainly after your first childbirth it'll go away! Best of luck.

Well said.. you have pointed out right facts in regards to pain killers. Unfortunately, clots formed from GI bleed stays only in the GI - intestine. It causes blackish stools (malena) or brown vomitus. It doesnt go around the body or travel in your circulation. smile.gif

Wow. A lay man telling off a specialist presumably O&G specialist to be ignorant. But you are right that most period cramps are not caused by disease and its perfectly normal to experience it and hence it couldn't be solve if there is no problem at the first place. Someone can control the symptoms however with medication or other methods.

If you visit a doctor you genuinely looking or expecting something pathological might be happening and therefore either seeking problems to be soughted or ruled out and to be assured nothing sinister is happening. The specialist did ultrasound to rule out causes of pathological bleeding such as endometriosis, uterine fibriod and chocolate cysts. You don't go to doctor knowing there is nothing wrong with your health.

The irony here is that the ignorance doesn't lie with the specialist who did years of trainings and exams to qualify as a professional but the person asking for some unrealistic cure.

i have bad cramps during my period also (cold sweat, throbbing pain, cramps, faint-spell).. but nowadays if i have bad cramps in the first day, then i just pop in 2 panadol..
i believe that if u take care of ur own diet throughout the month, the cramp wouldnt be so bad.. eg.. less intake of cold/ice water, less salty food..
but in certain cases, it might be some complications in the body.. so check with a specialist if it gets to bad..

sweat.gif You won't die without panadols, just that you have to tolerate the cramps only. IMO, taking 2 tablets when you sense that the cramps are coming is NOT a good practice. shakehead.gif Sometimes the cramps might feel that it might get worse but it could possibly not, so if the minute you sense pain or think that major cramps are coming and you pop in two tablets....

Girls, I know how painful cramps can be but please don't simply pop in Panadol tablets as if you're taking Strepsils or something. I've one friend who did that everytime she have cramps and her dosage increased from 1 tablet to 2 tablets and now she's popping in 3 tablets because she says the pain relief effects are getting lesser.

I pop EPO tablets until pain goes but have to take every 3-4 hrs. On first day of pain, usually 4-6 tablets. Pain goes away but the bloated feeling and lethargy still there.

But if I rajin to take the EPO tablets every day, then no need to pop so much when period does come. And avoid certain foods and also cold water.

I used to take painkillers until I read up about the impact to gastric and stomach. Even NSAIID is bad.

I'm a guy so I don't know what am I doing here but I have talked with girls about their cramps too (don't ask me how it started) but rather than dealing with the pain on the spot, they told me over time they have discovered that pain has a lot to do what they do recently.

for instance, a friend says she should gym (as she goes very often doing cardio sessions) around the period season because it would aggravate the pain it comes.

another says she should refrain from anything spicy / cold to eat before the period cramp because that'd aggravate the pain too

hot water pack is a good thing to reduce the pain too

well the cramps happen d/t involuntary contractions of the uterus because it has to dispose the unwanted things inside it.. you can try relaxation techniques like forearm on thighs while sitting down letting your weights rest on your thighs and slowly breathing in thru nose out thru mouth.. also you can lie down and curve your body like a ball and slowly try breathing technique. hehe.. Hope it helps! wink.gif

Menstrual cramps are caused due to the shedding of the inner lining of the uterine wall, witch will be quite painful when the body is cold, every time I got worse cramps when I got colder. Then I got one thing which just saved me, that is EmrysHome & Flexwarm Menstrual Pain Relief Heat Belt,it is a uterus warming belt which can heat up by far-infrared intelligently. Very ulitity and portable. It really helps me a lot.
