Following Nvidia's GTS 250 rebrand, ATI has slightly adjusted HD 4870 prices to make the green team's life a bit harder.
At the moment you can get an HD 4870 for €149. The card comes from Sapphire and features a non-refernce heatpipe cooler. For €10 more you can get a 775MHz Gainward with a non-reference dual-fan cooler, or Powercolor's PCS edition card at 780MHz.
The cheapest GTS 250 comes from Palit, it's a reference design and costs €149.

With NVIDIA getting ready to launch the GTS 250, ATI is slashing prices on its HD
4870 and HD 4850 cards. The price cuts will drop the 4870 down to $149 and the 4850 will go down to $129. If the price cuts hit later in the week, this should really give NVIDIA a run for its money.
ATI's dual GPU offerings, the HD4850 X2 and HD4870 X2, don't seem to be getting the price cut at all and the HD 4830 will also stay the same price. The HD 4830 will soon be replaced by the upcomming RV740, which is also expected to launch along side the RV790 chip.
More importantly is that this adds some evidence to earlier rumors on the Radeon HD 4890 launch date of April 6.
If everything holds true, the next month or so will prove very interesting for everyone in the video card market. To be exact, new price for 4870 would be around RM600.
it seems AMD/ATi decides for 4870 to be compete GTS250 head-on (initially HD4870 was built to target 9800GTX anyway)

I think the new price will only apply to the newer stocks after the price cut, it's a very huge price drop after all.

This is crazy. How low can ATI set it? Or are they preparing for a 5xxx launch? Their chips are cheaper to make.. this might be a big impact to nvidia(haiz rig delayed I think. actually its (199+x)*3.6=900, so x=183.6/3.6=51
so now 199 become 149, so (149+51)*3.6=720
so the new price is RM720 and not RM670.

I've asked someone who works in LYP regarding this price slash and he was shocked when he heard the news. He told me that they probably wont lower it until they get all their goods sold which I think will take a minimum of 2 months atleast.

Well talk is easy. How many of the consumers are actually informed about the price slash? Basically you could say it's a max of 40% while the other 60% doesnt know anything yet

actually if im one the shops, i will try to sell 2 units at RM720 rather than 1 unit at RM800 when the cost is RM600.
revenue is higher, more customer base and more profit. not to mention, u can 'trick' one of those buyers into buying new psu, motherboard or ram just like when supermarket has an offer, u go there buy 1 thing become buy lots of other things, in the end, total bill is higher than u buy elsewhere wheres theres no sale on. hahaha just a thought

Don't underestimate the 4890, actually.
Although the pricing will be higher than GTX 260 Core 216, do remember that ATI normally prices to make the competition look bad. So I think you should be seeing the 4890 doing really well.
Oh, as well as the 1Ghz GPU core overclocks.

With the US economy in this state, I think development on new generation of GPU will be much slower as company downsize and milk the cow longer.
Besides, if your card already can run Crysis at 30FPS or more on your wanted resolution, there's no need to upgrade for current user of 4850/4870. Just use it for another year and viola, new generation came out and upgrade. Why upgrade to the same generation? Waste money sia. Even though ATI promise 20% faster (heard this before huh? catalyst 9.2 huh?), I think its probably at the highest resolution or something. I dont think they can get 20% across the board.
