The uncertainty over the future of Rafael Benitez shows no sign of being resolved in the immediate future with the Liverpool manager revealing he is still waiting to see proof of long-term stability before signing his new contract.


The Spanish coach has been in talks with owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks for months over a new deal with his present contract due to expire in 15 months.

The imminent departure of chief executive Rick Parry was thought to have strengthened Benitez's hand in negotiations, giving him the chance to take greater control of transfers. But Benitez still wants to oversee youth academy matters and be shown proof there is now unity in the boardroom.

"I must decide on my future in the next two weeks and I want a medium or long-term project,'' he told The Sun. "I don't want to be working from day to day always hanging on the latest result. I will work where I feel I can develop a project.''

On one hand the club's Champions League victory over Real Madrid has further enhanced Benitez reputation on Merseyside, but it will also not have gone unnoticed at the Bernabeu with Juande Ramos likely to be replaced in the summer.

And while Benitez was quick to underline he was committed to Liverpool, he has also re-stated his admiration for Real.

But Benitez would never enjoy such overall control at a club in La Liga, nor would he be allowed to embark on such a long-term rebuilding project which is his vision at Liverpool.

Ahead of Saturday's crunch Premier League showdown with Manchester United, it could be said that Benitez is looking to create an all-encompassing dynasty very much like Sir Alex Ferguson has at Old Trafford.

He added: "People who claim that I'm going to take over at Real Madrid are doing the wrong thing in spreading that idea. I have a contract with Liverpool, I owe Liverpool - I'm only thinking of them.

"Real Madrid are a great club but I'm at another wonderful club - one which motivates me.

"What I want is hard to find in Spain. Long-term projects do not exist, not like they do in England.''
