i want to ask ur opinion on what laptop should i buy.

im looking for laptop dat suitable for me to use in engineering field.

my budget for this laptop is about RM2200.i`ll spend another RM200-RM300 for the extended warranty.

my problem with this laptop is about the warranty.they provide 2 years warranty.but if i want to extend for another years,i need to buy it for RM460.

my frenz suggest me to buy hp or dell laptop bcoz they will come to ur place to repair ur laptop if hav probs.

If you want autocad software to run best. At least get a quadro series graphics card. Too bad it cost a bomb.

ooh, Dell does come to ur place to fix ur laptop but HP does not provide such service..had bad experience with them so i'll won't bother to get HP notebooks. As for Asus, I own the above laptop that u mean. Well, since for engineering and ur budget is limited, i could say the laptop should suit u quite good. upgrade the ram to 4gb and u're good to go ooh, as for the warranty ar, to extend another year only cost less than 100 over at KL btw if not mistaken the laptop model should b X59GL right?

one is X50GL and another one is X59GL.
X50GL come with 250gb hdd and X59GL come with 160gb hdd.
but the price is same.

if i use windows XP 32bit,is it worth to use 4gb ram?can windows detect my ram if i shared the memory with the gc?some one said that XP 32bit juz can recognize 3gb ram.

wat software do u want me to test ar? i tested Left 4 Dead only...on standard settings. u can't expect much out of that gpu though but it surely performs better than intel ..32bit? yeah, but u only see like 3.25gb instead of fully 4gb lor..ooh yeah, the gpu does share some gpu mem with the ram so no worries on it, at least the ram r not wasted lol...well, maybe u could enquire them how come it cost so much? it the warranty by Asus or by the shop itselfs?

sharing the ram will make the laptop slower is for those laptop with lower ram.. but it is better to have a graphic card for laptop than for those share ram.. i think it is also depend to the software that u run with high graphic card requirement is compatible with the driver and OS that u run.. for expample like me, now i running windows 7 x64 playing devil may cry 4, but the performance is seem lower than when i using vista ulti x64..
better you choose a laptop with graphic card else you will regret like me..

don't think so..as long got a lot of ram, it won't b slower. after all it's a Nvidia gpu (surely better than intel gpu a lot) most gpu usually share some more the ram and only a few has dedicated memory

Its better to get a desktop at that price range. That graphics is pretty weak. Its the weakest graphics card for its range and it can't take lots of OpenGL related stuff (i.e AutoCAD and so on)

For gaming its different and AutoCAD , etc its different. This is why Nvidia has two ranges of graphics card. One for gaming and the other one for folks like you , Quardo series

dump the laptop idea and get yourself a desktop. works much better with bigger screen and better everything. that budget could (and would) land yourself a decent above average workstation desktop.

can't beat working on a 22" screen with quad core and 4GB of ram. though the Quadro FX is way too much, a decent nVidia GC supporting OpenGL is good enough for both gaming and working.
back in my days, some normal nVidia GC could be modified to Quadro FX series since they're identical. only that the Quadro FX drivers has better support for OpenGL and the normal drivers has better support towards Direct X for gaming.

but of course with a desktop, you lose the portability and chick factor though

if u only run 2D on Acad, no need quandro la..... but 8200 not that good also, but always pawns intell graphic,

p/s 2 GB memory cost RM60ish if not mistaken

If you have budget, then mayb u can try acer aspire 6935G.It has 512MB of 9600m GT dedicated graphic card.SO it would be very useful to run autocad.It cost around RM 4499

nope, you should have dedicated graphics card. Try search for DELL PRESISION LAPTOP M2400.

It designed for designer and engineer using autocad, for example.. you may prefer refurbished if you are lucky to search one.

Since you are using autocad and CATIA, I suggest that your laptop must have dedicated graphic card and at least of 2GB RAM to run.If you top up another RM 1000, then you can buy BENQ S42 since it come withP8700 processor,4GB ram and 256 MB of 9600MGT DDR3 graphic card.Besides, it is more future proof.

You need a quadro GC laptop for engineering work. I have tried those 3d engineering software and standard GC laptop cannot handle the task. It will keep on shutdown your program. Some my friend have this problem also. So they can do simple and not so heavy job only.
My recommend is DELL precision model laptop. ( I m using one)

Extended warranty, should you buy an extended warranty? IMHO and this is strictly me personal opinion, extended warranty is not worth the money.

Save the money for a new notebook because by the time your notebook breaks down it's time for a new laptop.

Manufacturers warranty should cover your losses for the immediate term. If a new laptop is going to break it will usually fail during the 1st year.
