and yes, trains are more expensive than lcc, but they bring you from city center to city center.......factor the cost of airpoet taxi/shuttle, may work out the same.......

I've stayed it before in Canberra for 2 days. I stay in a room with 8 other strangers. Quite ok because I just needed a place to sleep. I took tiger airline. No problem for me. You can cook at the hostel. Some people who had stayed for few days they went to supermarket to buy raw materials and cook it at the kitchen. You also can bring instant noodles if you want.

The thing you need to remember is bring your own lock. They have locker which you can put your bag and lock it. Enjoy your trip.

Anyone got room for end of February or March next year at around North Melbourne or Parkville (spelling not sure). I think I ask it too early. Ask it next year:p
