look at this, click on the links to understand each detail better..

most importantly is understanding the type of fit that you want.. then understanding the type details you want (collar type, pockets? cuffs? etc).. i'd probably say additional attributes which makes a perceived good shirt is when they have mother-of-pearl buttons, split yoke..

ncie link. still checking it out. very detailed. haha. i went to lords tailor today as i plan to make my suit there. they quoted me around 3xx-4xx for a shirt. i saw a hugo boss dress shirt which looks cool but i dont really know what material it is made of. its black and a little shiny and has a soft touch to it, unlike the shirts i saw in lords tailor. any idea what maetrial is that?

stay away from smooth and shiny cloths for dress shirts, opt for full cotton..

not really a rule, its just the shiny one makes you look more like a P.I.M.P..
cotton dress shirts are feels better on the body, they don't stick on to your body (when you sweat), and they breathe better, and are pretty much more professional looking..

Hey guys I'm new to this tailoring thing. Just got back from sparkmanshop in 1u. He quoted me RM 120 and 160 workmanship for shirts and pants respectively. Is the price okay?

Does anyone knows the normal price of a shirt and trousers assuming normal wool cloth is used? Thanks!
*
just for the workmanship or plus material.. if it is inclusive of material, then i doubt the pants would be wool..

i think you miunderstood me Jind
my quoted price by them was RM120 for shirt, 160 for pants. These are workmanship prices only. If include their cloth, it would be RM320 above for shirts and RM360 for pants.

I was asking if the workmanship prices quoted to me was reasonable? 1 thing i notice though the Chinese guy was reluctant to even talk to me when I said I am new to this and was just asking.

Thanks!

thats pretty pricey.. im looking at getting a shirt from de-catano at the moment, they start around RM160 for the complete shirt.. d3vilzzz has ordered one.. will wait to take a look at his shirt =)

planning to visit de-catano tomorrow to get a custom dress shirt.. kotmj and lanatir you guys have patronized de-catano right? what do you think of their shirt-making?

btw i've not done a custom shirt bfore, what are the steps.. so first is the measurements, then is there like a first and second fitting? or after the measurement the shirt would have been completed in the next visit?

QUOTE(kotmj @ Dec 14 2009, 02:00 AM)
I've never been to decatano. There was a guy here once who got his first bespoke there and was deeply unhappy with it.

I had two pairs of pants made in my hometown earlier this year. The girl (daughter of the tailor) kept asking me about my preference for each measurement. Lots of talking. Result: Unwearable. Too damned tight everywhere. I am a lousy pant designer.

Ah Loke never asks me for my opinion (he always thinks he knows better). Result of the two pants (which came with the suits): Very nice.

Had bespoke shirts made at Chicago and AL. I was very happy with the fit Chicago gave me. Until I wore the AL. Better in EVERY aspect.

So the quality is very variable. It depends on the tailor.

I shall never have a shirt of mine monogrammed. Ever.

hmmm ok.. im pretty attracted to de-catano for some reason and will probably pay them a visit tomorrow to check them out.. plus i'll be in bangsar tomorrow anyway..

not even a monogram in the inner yoke? having a monogram on the shirt just feels more, custom =D

I don't know why but it feels like a diamond-encrusted Rolex to me. Non-functional decoration. How did the Bible put it: "a golden ring in a pig's nose"? Something like that.

i read somewhere that they were actually for laundry purpose.. in case your shirts got mixed up..

yes! oni RM160, i tink the price is decided base on the material you choose
modified from a ready to wear pattern, chose me cloth/ pre -made pattern ->took me measurements -> and then its made, overall this is it, but with MY measurements
*
OMG i was eyeing this material too.. so basically yours was a made-to-measure la? you can't change like collar type, cuff type etc rite?

i thought in their website they stated extra RM20 to customize measurement and add your monogram?

haha, 1 thing abt this material is dat the pink stripes are realli pale biggrin.gif
yea made to measure, but i was asked if i wanted to change the collar and all, no charge biggrin.gif so i guess i could have it changed if i wanted too..

mine is mongramed, no extra charge.. though i dun rmbr asking for it tongue.gif
*
which boutique you went to?

i just came back from visiting de-catano in hartamas, the bangsar one did not have the starting price materials.. the tailor in de-catano was really nice.. ordered the same material you did but with my own details and specifications, so its fully custom made.. i just hope he got every single thing i specified, because it didn't seem like he wrote some of them down..

RM180, but its single-ply cotton tho..

one week and my shirt will be ready..

RM180 is the price..

the ready-to-wear one was RM160.. but i didn't like the pockets, and i wanted a more narrow collar..

lets see how it turns out =D

i get also what you say abt the collar being wide,  something for me to also note the next time around
Good Luck  icon_idea.gif

i was looking at the shirt yesterday and the collars were really broad.. 3 and a half inches wide if im not mistaken.. i had mine narrowed down to 2 inches..

QUOTE(kotmj @ Dec 16 2009, 12:27 AM)
It's not the cuffs, it's the sleeves. The sleeves need to be longer. Do you like the breast pocket? Do you think they add value to the look or are they a distraction?
*
i think he looks somewhat alright with that huge pocket..

but yeah d3vilzzzz, maybe you should consider a smaller pocket? or no pockets at all.. feels more modern..
