alfed dunhill pen + pen case?
lol.

yeah, silly, isn't it? for that price i could have procured something more common, luxury and widely-accepted (in this forum especially), and receiving all the limelights and admirations from ppl saying "wow! nice XXXX! how much?"

not true.  a gentleman's appreciation of fine goods does not only extend to LV belts and wallets. =)

that being said - wow! nice pen! how much?
I prefer the French's interpretation of writing instruments to the English, but as a collector I appreciate a fine writing instrument when I see one.
Here's one I acquired from the PenGallery in KL.  So sad, ever since the fire at the S.T. Dupont factory, some good models have been hard to find.

S.T. Dupont Olympio finished in Palladium.
Rhodium and 24k Gold Tipped Nib and removable plunger.

i think he meant other luxury goods (non pens) in general.

white mountain is to pens and rolex is to watches.

yes, good quality, but totally mainstream and mass produced.

Nice fine pen there!

By the way, atta, do you mind amending your thread's title to request that forumers include pictures in their posts? I'm re-pinning this thread.
*
Yeap amended as per request and thanks heaps for re-pinning this thread!
Btw, using iPad 2 to type is really a pain in the arse!

i suppose that depends on who you ask. I doubt many would spend over RM 600 on a single pen!

i dont get how do people spend so much on a pen.
i know im kampung lah, but i dont feel safe carrying a pen that cost me a grand in my pocket.
Dad gave me a Mont Blanc for my 12th birthday, until now remains unused.
i mean, i dont see the need to use it. well, im still a student la. but im frens use it for exams.
sorry if i offend you guys by not appreciating the value of these luxury items.
so why the hype over an overpriced pen? mines a boheme bleu fountain pen and it still lies in my drawer collecting dust, untouched for 7 years straight and counting.

Luxury goods are, for the most part, statements of success and wealth, or at least, a demonstration of image.  Sure there are good materials, history, blah blah blah, but a lot of that stuff can be found in items that do not have the brand name, for much less.

So that being said, an expensive pen makes that statement.  And why would someone want to make that statement?  To post on LYN?  Probably not.

For me, it's a little bit about business and some more about interest.  Doing business with people that are successful and appreciate the finer things in life.  When I break out an expensive pen, the bloke on the other side of the desk knows that I am serious about what I do and appreciate detail.  It is the same reason why it's best not to go into a business meeting with a t-shirt and shorts.  The suit is more appropriate because of the statement you are trying to make, whether it be a professional one or one that shows respect for the person you're meeting with.

I remember having a great conversation with a CEO over his IWC watch and my Panerai.  I think he looked at me quite different after it, and there was some mutual respect, even though he was at least 15 years older.
In the end, we never got the deal done, and there are times where the decision maker could care less about what kind of pen, watch, shoes, wallet, accessories, car, etc, that you have.  But, it's the time that it does have some impact that we look forward to.

With atta posting a pic of a fine pen, a collector like myself appreciates the decision he has made and the choice to spend that kind of money and (hopefully) the hard work he put into earning it.  I view him differently as a result (in a good way).

Added on June 16, 2011, 12:18 pm

to save money, you have to earn it, yeah?  or someone has to give it to you.

do you mind me asking how you come about it?
*
the first criterion for my daily usage pen is it must be able to withstand all kind of abuse, that's why i choose something with a rough surface, in my case, the diamond pattern. proper care should be in pipeline to ensure they last but i never believe in pampering luxury belongings; they should work for you, not the other way round.

some of you have been pm-ing me; i never expect it to be a favourite amongst. as an indicator, the pen and leather pen holder cost me not less than 2.2k.

i was browsing through an array of articles last weekend, but nothing caught my eyes. then i saw it lying behind the cash register. i asked the sales lady there if it was on sale. the answer was positive with additional discount for vip.

just can't help it. i bought it straightaway. i selected the best among the two.

i like the details very much. the logo was crafted into its wooden handle. black on the outside, red tartan inside.

Haha wow you still can remember 'the specials'? As a matter of fact, I get this because it resembles the specials.

Yea, white laurel will be a lot more better.

Thanks. I have another Fred perry in a bigger polka dot. Some how rather all the polka dot polos that I have are made in Portugal.

there are, of course, other brands besides FP out there gentlemen.

No doubt about it. It is a matter of which one suits you the most and brings out your personality.

I am a skinhead, and Fred perry, with its history associated to skinhead/mod/punk and non-mainstream underground music scene, suits my character and personality.
