this is what i heard from my fren...

in Akademi Laut Malaysia(owned by MISC..so u need to be ALAM cadet if u wanted to work in MISC), mainly u can study...marine engineering or nautical studies(deck) ...
of coz, there are some other modular courses, eg fire fighting, water jumping etc.

btw, just piece of advise, ALAM isnt as good as its advertising...in term of of everything.
n it practises regimentation system ...eg u march in group in stead of walking individually in the campus(imagine 1 or 2 of ur group members r late ...u need to wait until they show up b4 u can go for ur destination...how much time could be wasted for nothing?), Man On Duty, Roll call(room inspection on 11pm 1by1 ...for 160+ cadets wearing tie attire.by the time it ends, already 1130pm..n u need to wake up at 530am in morning,...morning physical exercise ...

160 ppl sharing 10+ shower rooms etc...very fixed schedule n very less free time....very different from casual tertiary intuitions

always have a actual visit before joining(but i doubt if ALAM lets u do tat rolleyes.gif )..before u regret  rolleyes.gif
====
other than ALAM, UTM n Politeknik Ungku Omar also have sea-going course iinm, but the problem now is, economy down, ships aint running, overwhelming cadets(sea-going trainees), I'd say, nowadays, it would be difficult to hv onboard training if u aint sponsored by shipping company, even sponsored cadets themselves are having difficulty being arranged to place on board ..
*
i see, thnx for ur informations happy.gif
i think by the time i graduated, the economics will turn good
haha

errr...one more question...the course Kejuruteraan Mekanikal Marin Teknologi offer by UTM...
is it able to work as sea-going stuff/engineer too?

same thing, during the time u are working, economy might turn worse..

of coz can, the UTM degree course is 1 level higher than ALAM n PUO's diploma in marine eng ...jus in term of academic...for salary, it depends ...
the requirement is to get a seaman card n some sort of oral test in Jabatan Laut M'sia ..doesnt matter where u graduated.

even casual mech/ elec engineer can be sea-going engineer provided he has underwent certain months of on board training(this is the difficult part, where to find a ship that willing to do so if u aint bonded with the company ?) n some modular course before obtaining the license to official seafarer
*
wow..
thn if someone who are fresh grad without any bonded company will hardly get the sea-going job ..><
*sigh*

any idea where to get bond with any company?
hahah biggrin.gif

both is possible...

usually it comes with pakage ....

say if u got bonded after graduated... the company might bond u for ten yrs then u would be sponsored for the COC course(the qualification to be promoted/3rd or 2nd or C engineer) ....

IINM, the COC course cost a few tenth thousands...

Industry faces acute manpower shortage
By SHARIDAN M. ALI

THE shipping industry is forecast to face an acute shortage of manpower if appropriate measures are not taken to produce well-trained and experienced seafarers.

“Unfortunately, the majority of industry players do not seem to be addressing the problem, and the current deficit of about 10,000 seafarers can increase to unprecedented levels in the next couple of years,” Malaysian Shipowners Association (MASA) chairman of Nordin Mat Yusoff said in an interview.

The worldwide number of seafarers is estimated at about 1.2 million currently.

The crew shortage is apparent in relation to the number of ships currently on order, totalling 8,000 vessels, with deliveries averaging 2,000 ships annually over the next three years.

Nordin, who is also vice-president (fleet) of MISC Bhd, said a staggering 20,000 new crew members, from junior officers to master mariners (at an average of 15 crew members per ship), would be needed be to meet the demand of new ships deployed every year.
Nordin Mat Yusoff

“And the number of seamen needed can be potentially more if attrition from those currently employed is also taken into account,” he said.

He said it would take more than eight to nine years to produce a well-trained ship captain while a new ship could be designed and delivered in less than two years.

“Given the current rate of growth of the shipping industry, there is no easy solution for the crewing crisis that will affect the industry in the next couple of years.

“The issue of how to solve the problem is becoming a subject of debate worldwide, and Asia being the global supplier of seafarers must be the leader in discussing the matter to help avert a potential crisis that could envelop the entire industry with dire consequences,” he said.

Nordin stressed that the temptation to take any shortcut to fulfil the standards in training and certification in meeting the shortages of seafarers should be avoided at all costs.

“It is hoped that more shipping companies in Malaysia will take the initiative in sponsoring students for maritime cadetship programmes. The least assistance the companies can offer is to provide berthing time for the students on board their ships,” he said.

Berthing time is a compulsory on-the-job training for seafaring students to complete their studies.

He added that currently, only a handful of Malaysian shipping companies participated in cadet sponsorship programmes and provided berthing time.

“We feel there is also a need to explore to what extent governments will be able to play a role in helping the industry overcome the issue of supply of seafarers.

“It will be worth the while to look into governmental policy on the training of seafarers apart from the expanded role needed from the industry, which has always taken the responsibility in meeting its own needs,” he said.

Nordin said it was also time the industry took serious note of the need for quality culture in shipping management.

“Quality management will ultimately determine the future economic viability and there is an overriding need to ensure a safety and quality culture involving the crewing of ships,” he said.

He pointed out that one of the biggest challenges facing the marine insurance industry was the human element, namely the quality of crewing and seafarers.

“The marine insurance industry has estimated that about 80% of the claims it handled are attributed to what is called human error arising from a number of factors,” Nordin said, adding the extent of the prevailing claims had direct impact on the cost of shipping.

“MASA hopes to bring up the issue of the shortage of seafarers for discussion at the 5th Asia Maritime & Logistics Conference 2008, so the industry collectively comes up with solutions.

“About 400 participants from the global shipping industry are expected to attend the conference,” he said.

MASA, which is organising the conference to be held on June 24 and 25 in Kuala Lumpur, has included discussions which will look at crewing issues, especially in the context of the new rules and regulations impacting seafaring and the impending new Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 of the International Labour Organisation.

Sometimes called the “super convention”, the new Maritime Labour Convention is expected to enter into force in 2010 with governments, ship owners and seafarers agreeing on comprehensive international requirements for seafarers’ working and living conditions and to promote quality shipping in the rapidly growing maritime sector.

The conference will include 17 presentations, a panel discussion on the state of shipping and a luncheon address by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on geopolitical developments impacting trade and shipping in Asia.

At least three of the presentations - a review of the new Maritime Labour Convention and related training and manning issues, impact of new rules and regulations, and how the technical management of the tankers is impacted by standards of crewing – will be discussed.

“Since this conference will be attended by a cross-section of decision-makers from the worldwide maritime industry, I have no doubt that participants will get to hear some fresh ideas and views that the industry needs urgently in addressing its concerns,” he said.

A maritime exhibition of about 100 exhibitors from all over the world will also be held in conjunction with the conference at the KLCC Convention Centre.

MASA currently represents about 12 million deadweight tonnes, more than 85% of Malaysia’s merchant fleet tonnage.

Im currently studying in ALAM. Will grad in about a year. MISC just came to ALAM to talk to all the cadets. Bad news for us. There will be no more >RM 30k waiting for us after graduation. They are changing the way things are done. After grad and get your Class 4 COC, have to do 6 months onboard as senior cadet. Allowance USD500 only. After that, 5th Engineer also for 6 months. Allowance USD800. No EPF and all because stillnot considered as salary. AFter you get through all that only you get to become 4th Engineer and get full pay.

The economy is bad. Many ships are being lay up. The liner (container) business especially, is badly affected. Better be prepared.

there are no reasons to hv more m'sian seafarers, shipping companies(including m'sia's ones), their main interest is to boarden their businesses in cheapest cost ....seafarers' nationality isnt their concern as long as the jobs are getting done nicely ..

(there are many reasones why the companies prefer to use certain nationalities seafarers ...it's like indonesian workers in malaysia...words can't describe the constraint

if salary is ur only interest to join this career, you'd be regret if u really join ...
by the time u are rich ... u hv no time...no family to enjoy with...so what is the point?

and if u strike with bad luck, and u hv gotten some health problems... u are as well as running to dead end with nothing...

btw, it's no longer a demanding careeer

tonnes of people is bonded with decades of job contract every year...

ALAM nowadays is taking hundreds of cadets(last yr was 800++)

1 ship only needs 20 crew members ...

do ur calculation boy...hw many ships MISC has?

I am also interested in joining ship, can you please advice me for my case?
I am 30 this yr and holding a degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering with almost 8 years working experience in semiconductor industry.

How can I get myself hired as an Electrical Engineer on board.
I heard that there is a 6 months course(is it Modular Course?), where i need to attend so that i could join ship.

Btw, do you know about Electrical Engineer's pay on board for a start like my case? Really appreciate for your inputs.

hi,im a newbie here. and im a DME freshie in UniKL,MIMET (Malaysian Institute of Marine Engineering Technology). Im a fresh SPM student too, silverchain. i faced the same problem,i ended up in UniKL,MIMET because i didnt get a place in ALAM. I got 7A1's and 2A'2's and 2'C4's. They didnt call me for the interview I was devastated. I didnt knw about Politeknik Ungku Omar at all, until i reached UniKL ,MIMET when my seniors told me. Well,Silverchain ,if u havent enrolled in any varsity or institute yet, u can apply for politeknik ungku omar and UniKL,MIMET..the biggest difference about UniKL,MIMET ,ALAM and PuO, is MIMET just got recognition with Jabatan Laut Malaysia and MQA is in the process of accredition. ALAM and PuO however, has recognition by IMO(international Maritime Organization + MQA) . So,if you are keen to be a mariner(if u didnt get ALAM), i suggest u to apply for PuO and MIMET..if u get PuO ,then take it..its better than MIMET. PuO is cheaper because its government based unlike my institute where we have to pay rm30k FOR THE WHOLE COURSE..and after our 5th semester, the institute is not gonna help us to find a company for internship. WE HAVE TO FIND OUR OWN!!!DAMN.. PuO however, Will help u apply for internship or in other words ,(practical)..ALAM is the best as far as i heard, because u get a sponsor + a job awaiting u after graduation. SO,silverchain ,choose wisely...im 18 too,and im in MIMET,things are going well coz, they are changing the system and recognition is on the way (as the administrration say) ha.ha only god knws the truth..but,we have our own shipyard, engine room, 1 rusty old small ship frm singapore(ha,..ha..ha), and the facilities are well, good. Our lecturers are the best around, i believe because we have a MAster mariner and a Watch keeper for IMO in our academic division + a handful of lectures with the initials 'Ir' in front of their name. laugh.gif . The only problem is Rm5K per semester (which im paying with my PTPTN loan) and the internship/practical program after the 5th sem.

BTW,destroyer..have u heard of BST (basic survival training) . I heard we cant get on a ship without completing this training ,is it true.?? Can u elaborate more on the procedure before getting onboard a ship for our practical besides the passport and seaman card issue, bro.

BTW,this is the best educational blog,i have ever seen regarding maritime education, keep up the good work, destroyer and other mariners..ill pass this blog to my other seniors for them to join.
