That answer is a bit simplistic isn't...well if u have committed a sin (yes it is true if u consume something considered to be non-halal, u have committed a sin), u need not necessarily go to hell. Why? Because humans it is their nature to make mistakes, to sin (and also to do good deeds). If everytime we sin we go to hell, well....there is one hell (albeit the fact that there are different levels of hell)....we sure go to a lot of hells...if we repent, our sins will be forgiven...it will be a clean slate all over again....there is a hadis (words of the prophet)...if my memory serves me correctly it goes something like this

u do not go to heaven because of your good deeds....u go to heaven because of Allah's grace i.e. His Love

so what does that suppose to mean...why do we do good things if that will not ensure our ticket to heaven?

the answer is because we do not know whether we go to hell or heaven....what we can do is....doing all we can i.e. do the things that God had ordained us to do and avoid the things that God had told us to avoid in order for us to be entitled to His grace, His Love, His forgiveness

That said...i believe that we do not go to hell just because of our sins...we go to hell because of God's wrath....and what will contribute to God's wrath?

If making all the simple mistakes is a sin, then the whole of humanity just incurred God's wrath

We are going to be judged for what we have done, sins and deeds will be counted

Have you feed the poor? Have you helped the oprhans? Did you steal the wealth of the orphans?
Did you help the ones in need?

And theres alot of others, but Islam teaches us to be charitable, such that even a smile is a charity, a deed.

So if the guy eats pork, he just incurred harm to himself, the warning has been mentioned, it will physically and psychologically affects him. And if he does not repent, then he will need to answer that question infront of God during Akhirat later.

Same goes to syirik and idolatry, even though many says that the sins of this wont be forgiven, but if the person sincerely regret for what he have done and started to follow back Islam on its track, then its ok because Allah is oft-forgiving.
