Fuyooo, finally my Denon Amp has lit-up DTS 96/24 on its front panel lcd. Glad to see it. Certainly there is obvious improvement and surround is very detailed especially the clapping of the crowds across front to rear.

Sadly its rare to find more of this format!

my lousy speakers shows no differ to my untrained ear with regular DTS and DTS96/24 at all.

Most people also cannot differentiate between Dolby Digital and DTS. I am sure there is a difference but it is so subtle that you really have to listen hard to really pin point the difference.

All this different format is more of a marketing gimmick to empty our wallet, but if you have really deep pocket, then by all means go for the best even if you can't tell the difference.

Not necessary to empty our wallet. Normally there is a choice between DD or DTS. It is up to individual to play whichever format if your amp does support both. Most movie pro reviewers would have preferred DTS as they are more detailed compared to DD. But frankly speaking, for most 1st timer into Home Audio or using HTiB plug and play would not have noticed their differences. As you go along to appreciate audio sound then you will find the solution.

I think DTS track is just louder therefore is always sound "better" to most people. If you turn up the volume of DD audio track, i think they sound just as good.

DTS on higher note sounds more crisp. Dun know about its lower frequency range. When you play war movies with those firing bullets all around you then you will know its real effect!

Oh yeah, on paper it is so huge difference. DD is 448kbps vs DTS 1536kbps. In practical, difference isnt as huge but improvement in SQ can be felt....

You are right. On paper DTS is way superior, but in reality most user will not notice the difference because most user do not have the best of AV equipments to really differentiate it. you can feed the best audio signal to an average equipment and at best you will get average sound only!

Then again if you have plenty of dollar and cents, why not go for the best, but if you don't you won't miss that much too.

Added on June 6, 2009, 1:04 amSometimes it just makes me wanna laugh when seeing how extreme audiophiles would go. You see a group of them playing the same song over and over again switching between speakers, position...etc, and hearing them say crazy thing like how one sounds slightly better then the others!

To me, the whole point of enjoying the music or movies are gone when someone tries to hard to get thing right. I personally feel that the acting, story and dialog in a movies is more important then a slightly less sharp sound of a bullet passing by. But that is just me.

Remember the source is the most important part. To appreciate DTS u need ori source that came with DTS. Uncle ho DTS is useless. Just an amplified version of DD tongue.gif

You are also right bout saying audiophiles tend to go overboard when comes to playing music for example. They tend to concentrate too much about the sound outcome at he expense of enjoy good cool.gif . Sometimes they dont bother to finish listening to the whole album. It is also like saying some HT enthusiast tend to focus on the pixels of the tv or counting how many hairs until they forget whole story the movie director intends to present. NO doubt PQ & SQ is very important to us or else we wont come together in this forum, but once we get a decent sound I think we should start to really enjoy the source. Thats my humble opinion.

About DD vs DTS mentioned by arremie, I agreed that original source is important to hear the difference. I have personally compared the R1 DVD to Ahem DVD with the same disc. The ahem simply sounds louder not the surprised details you get to hear from original DTS! Try it and you will fell in love with DTS in less than 10mins thumbup.gif

I agree...if a piece of music is beautifully composed and arranged, one would want to enjoy and appreciate the music as a whole...unless of course one has a dedicated audio/HT room, AND lots of time to actually sit in the sweet spot and savour every detail. Personally, everyday life takes over most of the time, and I'm lucky if I can get an uninterrupted hour per week to listen to my favourite "audiophile" CDs. I guess when I get older, I will have more time, but by then I may need hearing aids, and God knows what I will infact be hearing then!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Lightning69, another option is to DL or get untouched BD ripped of up to 40GB! This is just say you have upgraded to Dvico! Read from AVForum that WD is most likely to come out their WDTV version 2 where HD audio or BD ISO should become realistic.

We just keep our fingers crossed that it would not be so soon, if not our wdtv firmware upgrade will surely hit a brick wall. More users or their technicians will be focusing
on the new box...... blink.gif

I don't think LOTR is out on bluray yet. Some of the finest movies like Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, Star War, Forest Gump, The Green Mile, Saving Private Ryan, A beautiful Mind, BraveHeart are all not release on Bluray yet.

Bro,
Who says all these movies are not released in BluRay?? Search amazon for bluray titles.......for LOTR trilogy BD boxset is selling at $69.99!
I am pretty sure you can buy the rest from amazon too.

You can DL from the net too. They clearly say the source is from BluRay. If not, buy the 1:1 ripped version for average RM15 per movie,..... tongue.gif
