1) Brown poodles
Do brown poodles typically turn gray or otherwise fade in color to a light salt and pepper brown or a taupe-ish color? Answer : Poodles have a gene that is called "Progressive Greying", also sometimes referred to as the G locus. When a black, blue, or brown dog has the mutation in this gene, they gradually fade in color with age.
Not all black, blue, or brown poodles have the mutation, but some do. Since it is a dominant mutation, if one of the parents was Progressively Greying, then there is 50% chance that the pups have the mutation as well. You will begin to see the change in color starting at a couple months of age and it is usually complete by the time the dog is mature. Though in some dogs there may be small changes throughout the life of the dog.

What poodle coat color best retains its color, over time? Do poodles of different color coats have different temperaments or conformation qualities?Answer : A true black should NEVER go grey. You will see some grizzling around the muzzle area but that should be it. There should be no white hairs in the main coat or they are not a black. Most poodles fade. That is the nature of the poodle. Most coat colors have had the fading gene introduced into them at some point so they fade. It is very hard to find a color that will stay its color for the lifetime of the dog. If its truly a black you seek then I would suggest getting a black from all black lines. You want no blue, no silver, and no other colors in the lines or the black may not stay true. There are some breeders out there that specialize in true blacks and breed for only blacks but you have to do your research to find them. Be sure to study pedigrees.
I hear that they have different temperments too however that is just the dog. Each dog has its own unique personality. What you want is a quality dog from a reputable breeder that has been well bred and you will be happy every time. Poodles of any color should conform to the breed standard as closely as possible with as few flaws as possible. Even those that are not quite show material and are pet quality should be the best that breeder can produce. I have had poodles of EVERY hue and color. I have not noticed that one color has a better personality than another. Sure I love some colors more than others, but that has nothing to do with personality. Poodles should be outgoing, loving, loyal, active, fun loving, protective, agile, fast, nice in conformation, and very intelligent.

I am thinking of purchasing a silver standard poodle male. His parents are silver and a rather pretty shade of grey but they are young still at only 2 and 3 years old. I would like to know how pale silvers will get. Will my puppy - who is very dark at the moment - fade to very pale grey or will he retain some of his darker pigment? Is there a way to determine this?Answer : Since the Silver color is a fading gene, it is hard to tell what color your dog will eventually be. Some Silvers will stop fading at around 2 yrs of age, and other Silvers will continue turning a lighter shade of Silver throughout their lives, it just lessens as they age so it isn't as obvious later in their lives. Their genes tell them when to stop fading.
If his parents are 2-3 yrs old, that should tell you a bit about what color he will be. If they are lighter, then expect him to be on the lighter side.
Blacks and Blues can also crop up in a Silver litter. Blacks will be solid black and won't have any Silver on their faces or between their toes. Blue Poodles will have a tinge of Brown in their coats as puppies. The Brown will fade out, and their coats will remain a very dark Silver color leaning almost to black. We have a Silver girl at home that is out of a Platnium (light) Silver female, that is on the darker side, more of a Steel grey color. I have 2 of her sons; one is going to be darker Silver and the other is a Blue. Their father is also a Silver that is more Dark than light.
You can't really predict when the Silver color will stop fading, you just have to see what the dogs color is when they are around 3-4 yrs of age or so.
