I just edited a bit of my previous post, smile.gif

To choose dog kibble, read the ingredient list, rules of thumb, named-meat meal must be in the first three in the ingredient list. For example, chicken meal, lamb meal, salmon meal, turkey meal, duck meal.. bla bla bla.. never buy any food start with poultry meal (cause you don't know what is poultry). And do not take Chicken as Chicken Meal. Its different. If Chicken (80% of them is water) is first ingredient and no chicken meal in the first five ingredient list, put back to the shelf too.

Never buy food that starts with poor filler and grain like corn, soy or animal by products. If you read any kibbles contains by products, put back to the shelf. That's the basic.

If you are going to feed kibble, the cheaper the food, the more filler there is... which also means that you scoop more poop when you feed these poorer quality foods, sometimes double the amount of poop to clean up! Top quality foods will have the first ingredient listed as a meat meal of some kind; for instance: chicken meal, fish meal, lamb meal, etc. This is important, because by the time the meat is dehydrated into meal, it is a very dense source of nutrition. If a bag of dog food has simply "chicken" listed as a first ingredient, then by the time it is made into kibble, it will be much farther down in the ingredient list, making it very likely that the main source of the food is grains such as corn, wheat or rice. And while grains can be ok, your poodle is a CARNIVORE, meaning that it's main food source should be meat, not grains!

And by the way, "chicken byproduct meal" is NOT considered to be a quality ingredient, as it is made up of all manner of parts that aren't all that great, such as the feet, heads, feathers, intenstines, etc. You want a kibble that proudly boasts "human grade ingredients used".

Many kibbles have a lot of chemical preservatives in them, which gives a long shelf life of up to two years. BUT they are likely the leading cause of skin allergies or other digestive allergies in dogs. Natural preservatives such as rosemary, vitamin E or other herbs will generally have a shelf life of six months or so... so it needs to be bought from a place that has a good turn-over of stock and then used up.

Examples of low quality foods to avoid: Anything you can find in a grocery store will be low end, Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Royal Canin, Pedigree, Kibbles n' Bits, Beneful, Ol'Roy.

Examples of high quality foods to look for: Innova, Wellness, Solid Gold, Canidae All Life Stages, Fromm Four Star, Merrick, GO Natural, Nature's Variety Prairie, Nature's Logic, Artemis Fresh Mix.

A great option is to go with an entirely grainless diet. Many of the high quality foods now put out grainless formulas. Some good grainless diets include: Innova EVO, Wellness CORE, Blue Wilderness, Nature's Variety Instinct, Orijen, Horizon Legacy, Merrick Before Grain, Canidae Grain Free All Life Stages, Fromm Surf & Turf, Now! and Sold Gold Barking At The Moon, Taste of the Wild.

blush.gif what pet nutritionist blush.gif If you have the time, just research on the net. A lot info there, but you need to read a lot to judge which is true which is not. Internet is a good source for information and don't forget the misinformation too!

For example, many says that dogs are carnivores (meat eaters) and some claim that they are omnivores (meat and plant eaters)... There are a lot debates in this topic alone. brows.gif

Hi guys , read this site
http://www.officialgreatdaneguide.com/grea...dane-puppy-food

Quite scary because few brands dog food contain "meat and bone meal" which has been known to contain dead dogs and cats.
