Sylvester Stallone Helming The Expendables

Sylvester Stallone is set to star in and direct The Expendables for Nu Image/Millennium Films, reports Variety.

Stallone, who also wrote the script, will be joined onscreen by Jason Statham, while Jet Li is in final negotiations to join the action film.

The movie follows a team of mercenaries on a mission to overthrow a South American dictator.

Filming starts in February in Costa Rica and Louisiana.

The producers are Avi Lerner, John Thompson and Kevin King Templeton. Boaz Davidson, Trevor Short and Danny Dimbort executive produce.

Stallone wants Whitaker for 'Expendables'
Action film to be shot in Costa Rica

Sylvester Stallone told a crowd of top AFM buyers that he's after Oscar winner Forest Whitaker to star in his upcoming actioner "The Expendables."

Jason Statham and Jet Li will star with writer-director Stallone as a band of rag-tag mercenaries on an undercover mission to depose a Latin American dictator. At a Boa Steakhouse lunch for the film's producers, Nu Image/Millennium Films, Stallone said he's aiming to land Whitaker for the role of a devious CIA agent involved in the operation.

The star also revealed the project he's now writing for a February shoot in Costa Rica and Louisiana will aim for a PG-13 rating ("it won't be a blood fest," he said), and jokingly thanked the producers "for giving me the $35 dollars to make this movie.

"Whereas the 'Oceans 11' films were an ensemble for good looking guys, this is an ensemble for ugly tough guys," he cracked.

Dolph Lundgren To Become Expendable

user posted image

It used to be that putting Sylvester Stallone in a movie was big enough of a draw. You’d think teaming Sly with other action actors like Jet Lee or Jason Stathem would be more than enough for fans these days. The Expendables is really heating things up, however, but putting all three of those guys together, plus another added face from Stallone’s glory days.

Sly, who also wrote The Expendables, was caught by Review Nation on the red carpet for Transporter 3 where he talked very briefly about his upcoming action combo, which he described as a “homecoming of tough guys.” Along with Lee, Stathem, and Stallone himself, the actor revealed that the studio is trying to get Dolph Lundgren on board with the film. Stallone and Lundgren faced off in Rocky IV, over twenty years ago.

The Expendables features a team of mercenaries sent to overthrow an evil dictator. With Stallone, Lee, Stathem, and Lundgren on board, that dictator better be played by Arnold Schwarzenegger if he’s going to have any chance at surviving.

Check out the video below - Stallone’s interview starts around 2:43.

AICN EXCLUSIVE: Stallone's EXPENDABLES Casting Continues!! + A Cool Tidbit About Who Dolph Lundgren Will Fight in The Film...

Mr. Stallone called Harry this morning to reveal more details about his mercenaries-vs-dictator action extravaganza THE EXPENDABLES.

He told Harry that UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture (website HERE) has been added to the movie's cast, joining the already announced Jason Statham, Jet Li, and Dolph Lundgren. Sly's hoping he'll be able to give Couture an excellent boost towards big screen action stardom.

Forrest Whittaker has also been cast in the film, which rolls this March in Brazil.

Oh, and look for Jet Li to fight Dolph Lundgren in THE EXPENDABLES. If that's not a plunge into Geeky bad-assity, I don't know what is.

I loved the most recent RAMBO - can't wait to see how EXPENDABLES shakes out.

Hottie is Expendable

So far, Sylvester Stallone's upcoming actioner THE EXPENDABLES has fanboys geekgasming seeing as how the movie features Stallone, Jet Li, Jason Statham and Dolph goddamn Lundgren as mercenaries sent to South America to "handle" a dictator. However, as great as the cast is, there's one key element missing from it - hotties. Honestly, what self-respecting movie featuring four good, old-fashioned cinematic tough guys as bad ass mercenaries doesn't feature at least two, three or eight smoking hot babes? So it's good to know that, according to fansite "Stallone Zone", the former Demolition Man, who's currently in Brazil scouting locations, took a look at Brazilian hottie Juliana Paes and decided he wanted her in the flick. It seems as if she's just at the auditioning stage at this point but an ass like that really shouldn't be denied.

Extra Tidbit: Paes posed for Brazilian Playboy in 2004, though the pictures have proven difficult to find. Anybody wanna help?

Bullock Expendable?

user posted image

Will Sylvester Stallone's action flick THE EXPENDABLES be a great movie... or the greatest movie?

So far, Sly has lined up Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Forest Whitaker and Randy Couture for his tale of mercenaries on a mission to take down an evil dictator. Will he also be reuniting with his spunky (and still quite desirable) DEMOLITION MAN partner Sandra Bullock?

That's what we've heard from someone who's worked on several Stallone projects, including this one. And while it's not a "done deal", Sly is apparently indeed pursuing her for the project. Bullock would play a government agent (paired up with Whitaker) on the hunt for Stallone's crew of hired guns. Delicious. Thanks to 'Belly' for the tip!

But wait -- there's more! My boy Clint over (or Down Under, more accurately) at Moviehole scored some character breakdowns from the flick, including verification/speculation as to which actors are in the roles. He also describes the movie as "CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER on acid", which only serves to make me dizzy with excitement. Check out all the details RIGHT HERE!

Extra Tidbit: I can't be the only one looking forward to this more than Tarantino's INGLORIOUS BASTARDS. Or most other movies in the next two years.

Vern has read Stallone's THE EXPENDABLES!!!

Usually I don't write much about a movie before it's made, because I prefer movies that exist. Every once in a while somebody sends me a script like LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD or RAMBO, but I usually ignore them. I would rather watch the finished movie and not know what the original plan was. And to be honest I'm not sure how qualified I am to tell you about the meal based on the recipe. But THE EXPENDABLES - a Sylvester Stallone action ensemble picture where he will write, direct and then star alongside Jet Li, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Forest Whitaker and Randy Couture - is a big f***in deal among those of us who love the action cinema of the '80s and '90s. We can't help but dream about this one like nerds once dreamed of Star Wars prequels or new outfits for their limited edition Serenity dolls so they can act out what would've happened in the second season. So when Stallone's script fell into my lap this time I couldn't resist.

By the way I would like to take a moment to welcome A.B. King to the talkback. Welcome, A.B.

The ragtag team of the title are a group of elite mercenary badasses - at one point described as "totally prepared to die in a blaze of glory" - hired to take out a dictator in the South American country of Corza. I do not have an opinion on what's going on in Corza because I believe it is a fictional country, but if in fact they're real I'm against them. They got all kinds of human rights violations and shit. No good.

Of course, the mission is not necessarily what it seems, there may or may not be some doublecrosses and deceits, etc.

The Expendables never come out and refer to themselves as The Expendables, but they do sport tattoos with an Expendables logo. Their lifestyle is rough but they have a dark sense of humor about it. The leader of the Expendables, Barney (played by Stallone I assume) has a good way of describing their purpose: "We remove those hard to get at stains." They try to do the right thing, but the movie itself seems sort of uncomfortable with the idea of soldiers of fortune and with puppet dictators and CIA tampering in other countries. It's a fun action movie but not some jingoistic imperialist deal like I think some people assume.

While I'm sure Stallone did some research about how these things work in the War On Terror era, happily this is not one of these Greengrassian modern action movies that tries to seem completely reality based. This is a movie where a team of 5 can take on an army of 100, where armed men still sometimes engage in martial arts and fisticuffs, where many, many things blow up, where occasionally a character might have something sarcastic to say during combat. In other words, a good old fashioned action movie. An endangered species.

Barney is a very different character from Rambo. For one thing, his name is Barney. For another he talks in more than one sentence sometimes. He's almost a father figure to the team and finds himself always listening to other people's problems and trying to be supportive. The other character who gets the most screen time is the lovelorn Lee Christmas. He's supposed to be American but calls a guy "mate" at one point, which means he's played by Jason Statham. There's also Kong Kao, who will be played by Jet Li. He does alot of kicking, but is much more of a supporting character than Li usually plays. I do think it's a pretty good character for Li, though, because he gets some funny lines. He's an unhappy smartass, not the usual Li type of character.

(Of course for all I know Stallone is playing the Chinese martial arts expert Kong Kao and Li is playing the weathered veteran mercenary Barney Ross. I don't want to make any assumptions here.)

Those are the marquee names, but the actor I was happiest to see cast was Dolph Lundgren. Obviously it's cool to see the Balboa/Drago rematch (or reteam), but I'm excited more because I think Lundgren deserves to be on the big screen again. The DTV pictures he's been directing and starring in are surprisingly watchable, and physically he's held up better than almost any of the '80s and '90s action stars. He still has a super hero physique with his towering height and square jaw, but looks more interesting with some wrinkles on his face.

Unfortunately, if Dolph is playing who I think he is then he's only in a couple scenes. It's a small but crucial role as an Expendable named Gunnar who comes into conflict with Kong. Harry has already reported that Lundgren will be fighting Li in the movie, so I will reveal that they get to fight twice. Let's be honest, Li has alot to prove after being defeated onscreen by god damn Brendan Fraser in THE MUMMY TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR A FILM BY ROB COHEN. I mean, how the f*** does that work? That is unacceptable. So for him to face a guy who's actually a martial arts champion and nearly a foot taller than he is will be good for Li's rep. Also Dolph has a degree in chemical engineering, not sure if that is relevant.

We also know that Forest Ghost Dog Whitaker is in the movie. He plays Sands, a CIA agent tracking the Expendables. The Hollywood Reporter described the character as "devious" but in this draft at least he seems well-meaning. The same can't be said for the CIA character they're allegedly trying to get Sandra Bullock to play - she would be more like the b**** she plays at the beginning of CRASH and less like at the end when she's cured of racism because she fell down and broke her ass. Harry also reported that UFC fighter Randy Couture (seen in SCORPION KING 2 and more importantly REDBELT) would be in the movie - I'm guessing he's Paine, an American operative working for the dictator. If so it's a generic henchman role that will require little acting ability, but at least he'll get to fight Stallone.

There are also Expendables whose casting has not been revealed as far as I know. There's Richard, who is the gay Expendable. It's a plot point that he's gay, but they don't make any dumb jokes about it, he's just a member of the team. I'm proud of Stallone for that one. On the other hand, the black Expendable isn't much more than a benign Black Dude stereotype. He doesn't get enough characterization, but on the positive side he owns a restaurant, is zealous about tacos and has a name even more cartoonish than Lee Christmas: his name is Hale Caesar. I approve of that.

(Have you ever met anybody with the last names Christmas or Caesar? I don't think I have yet.)

The story is pretty standard, but if the movie works it will be partly because of the odd little touches here and there. I like that Barney is kind of a goofy old dude and doesn't try to be up to date at all. We're used to seeing Statham drive around in fancy brand new cars in his movies, in this one he'll be in the passenger seat of Barney's '56 Ford F-100 pickup truck. I don't think it specifies if the thing is restored or not, but I like to picture it as a real junker. You can't say Barney's poor though, because he owns a plane. When the guy hiring them asks if he has children Barney says, "I have a seaplane." He's pretty proud of that thing.

I have no idea if this is the final draft, but most of the characters are pretty lightly sketched. On the page I wouldn't say they seem like iconic action movie characters that we're all gonna remember, but hopefully the cast can bring something more to them. Like I said, it's a recipe. You'd hope Forest Whitaker could put a little spice on his role, for example.

Stallone does a good job of mixing up the location - they travel between the US, Mexico and Corza, which should keep it visually interesting. The action scenes, as written, are pretty good. There is variety, with action at sea, in a plane, in trucks, with guns, knives, feet, forearms, one-on-one and in a mob. My biggest hope for the movie is that the second Dolph vs. Jet fight will be much longer than what Stallone wrote down. As written it's way too brief. Please Stallone, don't skimp on that one. (Dolph gotta eat? I never did understand that "gotta eat" thing you guys like to write.)

Fortunately an action scene is often gonna be shot totally different than scripted. For the climactic "extraordinary battle scene" Stallone doesn't even bother to script it, he just writes:

"THE BATTLE IS ON!! WHAT ENSUES IS A REMARKABLY SAVAGE EBB AND FLOW BATTLE. TO DESCRIBE THE ACTION DESIGNED FOR THIS SCENE WOULD TAKE MANY PAGES, SO TRUST ME, IT'LL BE LIKE NOTHING SEEN BEFORE."

Maybe you can take Stallone at his word on that, or maybe he just wanted to figure it out later. In the screenplay Barney turns out to have a few tricks up his sleeve that I didn't expect, so maybe Stallone does too. We'll see.

I wouldn't say THE EXPENDABLES is a great script necessarily, but it definitely has potential. He's got a good backbone that now needs some charismatic performances and well-executed action sequences on top. We know it has a good cast and that the action in RAMBO was pretty good. So I think this has a good shot. I'm still excited.

Forest Whitaker eyes 'Expendables'
Sylvester Stallone's film includes Jet Li, Jason Statham

Sylvester Stallone may have his man.

Forest Whitaker is negotiating to join the cast of the action film "The Expendables," Stallone's latest writing and directing effort. Whitaker would play the CIA liaison for a group of mercenaries (played by Stallone, Jet Li, Randy Couture and Jason Statham) who are clandestinely sent to South America to overthrow a dictator.

Nu Image/Millennium Films is producing the film. Avi Lerner, John Thompson and Kevin King Templeton are producing along with exec producers Boaz Davidson, Trevor Short and Danny Dimbort.

Stallone, who expressed his intention to woo Whitaker at the AFM in November, has been scouting locations for a February shoot. Reports about Stallone's pursuit of "Demolition Man" co-star Sandra Bullock amount to, according to a Nu Image/Millennium spokesperson, merely wishful thinking for fans.

"Expendables" is the first project in Stallone's two-picture deal with Nu Image/Millennium. He last wrote and directed "Rambo," which mowed down $155 million in worldwide grosses.

The WMA-repped Whitaker won an Oscar for "The Last King of Scotland" and next appears in "Hurricane Season" and "Repossession Mambo."

Well, it sounds like Sylvester Stallone won't be reuniting with his DEMOLITION MAN co-star Sandra Bullock after all. But has his all-out action onslaught THE EXPENDABLES gained a knight?

While ambushed by Extra, Stallone not only confirmed the involvement of Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker, but dropped that Sir Ben Kingsley may also join his badass movie about a badass team of badasses. (He then expressed sorrow for the death of John Travolta's son, and took off in a ludicrously nice car.)

No telling who Kingsley might play -- will he slip on his villain trousers again to play the flick's cruel dictator, or will he somehow be assisting Stallone's team of mercs?

One thing's for sure: the guy loves to work (thereby explaining BLOODRAYNE, THUNDERBIRDS, A SOUND OF THUNDER, etc.). He'll next be seen in PRINCE OF PERSIA, Scorsese's SHUTTER ISLAND, and probably advertisements for your local grocer.

Extra Tidbit: Yeah, that is Sir Ben's most recent wife. C'mon, when you hit your 60s (50s, 40s, etc.), you'll try to do the same thing

Mickey Rourke joins 'Expendables'
Actor added to cast of Stallone's action film

Mickey Rourke has joined the ranks of "The Expendables," joining the ensemble of the Sylvester Stallone-directed action adventure for Nu Image/Millennium Films.

Rourke will play an unscrupulous arms dealer who becomes the go-to guy for a group of mercenaries planning to topple a South American dictator.

Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Randy Couture and Dolph Lungdren play the title characters. Forest Whitaker and Ben Kingsley are also circling the project.

The Stallone-scripted film begins shooting in March in Brazil. Avi Lerner, John Tompson and Kevin King Templeton are producing, with Boaz Davidson, Trevor Short and Danny Dimbort exec producers.

In recounting his rise to Oscar contention with "The Wrestler," Rourke has credited Stallone for helping him get back in the business at a low ebb, when Stallone met him at a restaurant and gave him a role in "Get Carter."

Rourke is starring in "13," the Gela Babluani-directed remake of the French thriller "13 Tzameti," which also stars Statham, Ray Winstone, Sam Riley, 50 Cent and Ray Liotta.

Jean-Claude Van Damme has spoken to totalfilm.com about why he turned down a part in Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables, claiming Stallone was just interested in pitching money and action.

“Stallone gave me a part in his next movie," he told us. "But I ask him about the subject, about the story."

"He said, ‘You’re gonna make lots of money.’ I don’t want to hear that, I want to hear what was my character.  He was unable to tell what it’s going to be."

"[Stallone said:] 'You know, uh, well, the fighting will be good.' [So I said:] 'Sly, what is my character?' So I didn’t do the movie."

AICN Exclusive: Arnold Schwarzeneggar joins the cast of THE EXPENDABLES!

Hey folks, Harry here... Just got off the phone with... ahem "my source" ahem... who let me know that Arnold Schwarzeggar is going to be playing Governor Arnold Schwarzeneggar in THE EXPENDABLES. He will be shooting for one day, and it seems that the Gov and Sly's character Barney Ross have some history back when the Gov was shooting CONAN THE BARBARIAN!

Also - Ben Kingsley is out as the dirty ******* CIA sob, and Eric Roberts is in! Also, Mickey Rourke has finally signed on officially!

The production is a month out from shooting, and reportedly according to (ahem) my source (ahem), the script has been being beaten into shape by Stallone who has been struggling to nail the right tonal balance of humor, action and emotional reality. So there you have it. Sly and Arnie are both in this film. I'd take that to the bank, I have a really good (ahem) source (ahem) on this!

Perhaps the Gov won't be in THE EXPENDABLES, and perhaps he will!

Hey folks, Harry here... It seems there's a possibility that my source was a bit too exuberant about the certainty of Arnold Schwarzeneggar signing aboard. The whole thing is very dependent upon what happens with Arnold's primary gig as the Governor of California. As most of you know, California has been hit brutally by the financial nightmare that has descended upon the world. If you read DRUDGE or any of the papers in California, you can see a stern faced Arnold working with the California legislature to find a way to fix some of the insanity that's happening in that state. That's the primary job that Arnold is working on over the rest of his term as Governor. If there's some daylight in there somewhere, he might possibly find the time to do his friend, Stallone, a favor by being in THE EXPENDABLES. My source also tells me that if this miracle does come to pass, you'll find Arnie not as the Governor, but as something a bit more gritty, scarred and brutalized.

So... where are things? Well, let's just say - if a f***ing miracle happens and California's economy turns around... we might have a miracle pairing on screen. However, if the nightmare in front of California stays murky... We may just have to wait for a brighter day. Let's all keep our fingers crossed for Sly & the state of California.

According to my trusted source, tough guy actor Danny Trejo, aka MACHETE has joined the cast of Sylvester Stallone's THE EXPENDABLES!

I don't know what role it is but I think it might actually be for a bad guy role most likely in the regime of the main bad guy that The Expendables have to topple.

So now Trejo joins Eric Roberts, Mickey Rourke and Arnold Schwarzenegger!

The film follows a team of mercenaries who head to South America on a mission to overthrow a dictator.

Stone Cold Ready To Open A Can Of Whup Ass On The Expendables

user posted image

This is exciting news for wrestling fans. I don't watch wrestling anymore because it sucks, but I used to around the Stone Cold and Rock days because it was fun to watch. Now it's a nightmare of shitty storylines and even worse wrestling.

Despite not making much money with The Condemned (a really good little action flick if  you haven't seen it), Stone Cold Steve Austin is still doing the acting thing and has joined the cast of The Expendables. As a good or bad guy I have no idea. Probably gonna be a bad guy, it fits him better. Maybe he'll get to smack around an ex wife or two in the movie. And some chick from Buffy is also in it.

From the trades:

WWE alum "Stone Cold" Steve Austin and Charisma Carpenter have been added to the cast of "The Expendables," starring, written and directed by Sylvester Stallone. Cast includes Mickey Rourke and Jason Statham.

Austin recently wrapped fight pic "Damage" and inked a TV development deal with Original Media and Caliber Media. Carpenter just completed horror pics "House of Bones" and "Vivid."

Looks like Jet Li and Terry Crews (Black dude from white chicks lol) is gonna die in this movie.

Theres a scene where Lundgren is kicking Li's ass in the 1st trailer and theres another scene where Lundgren is holding a half-dead Jet Li and preparing to impale him with a steel pipe.

Well, the black dude is gonna die 1st anyways coz he was not mentioned in the cast list.

Expendable: capable of being sacrificed in order to accomplish a military objective.

THE EXPENDABLES is a hard-hitting action/thriller about a group of mercenaries hired to infiltrate a South American country and overthrow its ruthless dictator. Once the mission begins, the men realize things arent quite as they appear, finding themselves caught in a dangerous web of deceit and betrayal. With their mission thwarted and an innocent life in danger, the men struggle with an even tougher challenge one that threatens to destroy this band of brothers.

Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) is a man with nothing to lose. Fearless and void of emotion, he is the leader, the sage and the strategist of this tight-knit band of men who live on the fringe. His only attachment is to his pickup truck, his seaplane and his team of loyal modern-day warriors. His is a true cynic who describes what he does as removing those hard to get at stains. The team behind him is made up of Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), former SAS and a savant with anything that has a blade; Yin Yang (Jet Li), a master at close-quarter combat; Hale Caesar (Terry Crews), who has known Barney for ten years and is a long-barrel weapons specialist; Toll Road (Randy Couture), a skilled demolitions expert and considered the intellect of the group; and Gunnar Jensen (Dolph Lundgren), a combat veteran and an expert in precision sniping who struggles with his own demons.

When the mysterious Church offers Barney a job no one else would take, Barney and his team embark on what appears to be a routine mission: overthrow General Gaza (David Zayas), the murderous dictator of the small island country of Vilena and end the years of death and destruction inflicted on its people. On a reconnaissance mission to Vilena, Barney and Christmas meet their contact Sandra (Giselle Itie), a local freedom-fighter with a dark secret. They also come to learn who their true enemy is: rogue ex-CIA operative James Monroe (Eric Roberts) and his henchman Paine (Steve Austin). When things go terribly wrong, Barney and Christmas are forced to leave Sandra behind, essentially giving her a death sentence. Haunted by this failure, Barney convinces the team to return to Vilena to rescue the hostage and finish the job he started. And to perhaps save a soul: his own.

First blood is different from other Rambo movie as it is really about how soldier adjust to live after returning from war, which in case of John Rambo he went insane and unleash an storm of ass kicking on a punch of police. the other movies are basically just a vehicle for Rambo to shoot a bunch of ppl right in the face. laugh.gif

The Expendables Video Game in Glorious 8-Bit Color

Taking a cue from “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World”, the marketing gurus behind the upcoming action orgasm “The Expendables” have unleashed their own retro tie-in to help put oversized butts in tiny theater seats. Behold “The Expendables 8-Bit Game”, a simple “Contra” knock-off that accurately captures the cheesy, two-button goodness of those bygone gaming days. Here’s the catch: In order to play the game, you’re going to have to hop over to Facebook and “like” it. Otherwise, you can’t play. This is, of course, a downer for those who simply cannot stand social networking sites, especially the ones who love to play cheap video games inspired by Hollywood action movies.

Expandables open the same day as Eat, Pray, Love, if this movie lost to a god damn chick flick, it will be a sad day for men around the world.

Uh... not to burst your bubble but...

Eat, Pray, Love is more than just a chick flick anyway... and this seriously depends on how The Expandables does well in the box-office, not to be number #1 but at least able to make some decent returns... if the movie works well that is...

Good example would be how Despicable Me defeated Predators in the box-office but Predators at least will definitely make some profit out of their budget...

The Expandables budget is 85 millions twice that of Predators and add in the marketing cost we are looking 100 millions box office to be able to consider this movie not a flop. topping the opening weekend will be important. anyway i think it will make at least 200 millions worldwide just from the cast worldwide appeal.

Yeah... worldwide box-office will do more compare to North America alone. But chances are... well, we have to see how it goes. It is sad some films that appeals more towards family or *I-can't-mention-here-or-I-get-labeled-being-gender-bias" that makes the most of it... well, in some cases of course. Still, all we have to do is wait and see what happens...

I still remember one Hong Kong movie called The Canton Godfather, it stars Jackie Chan and a whole lot of famous actors inside made a lot of money in the box-office...

But that was in 1989, where action films reign box-office (any movie by Stallone, Arnold, Van Damme, Lundgren, Seagal and any other action stars) all the time...

We all just have to wait and see... I am hoping this will be one enjoyable film too icon_rolleyes.gif

this has gotta be the most anticipated movie of this year ! the actor lineups makes it a very promising action movie. I mean come on, from the badass driver Jason Statham to the ass-kicking Rambooooo ! Not to mention Terry Crews, who never fails to be the clown in movies. Lots of other great actors as well. I've been waiting for this movie since last year wooot and the waiting shall end soon !

IMO, it'd be awesome if Stallone had included Van Damme in this movie. Everyone needs a universal soldier in their battalion biggrin.gif . Oh well, can't always ask for all the best things in life eh. Need a time machine now to fast forward to the release day of this movie wooot !

QUOTE
Sylvester Stallone Blames 'Batman' for Decline of '80s Action Heroes

Back in the 1980s, they were the biggest stars in Hollywood, both in terms of box-office receipts and bicep circumference. But the glory days of the brawny action heroes -- Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Van Damme, and the like -- eventually faded. In their place, a new breed of '90s star took over: younger, leaner, and nowhere near as macho. By decade's end, Keanu Reeves was a huge action star (shudder to think).

Where did it all go wrong? According to an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Sylvester Stallone puts the blame squarely on the caped shoulders of one comic book hero.

"It was the first 'Batman' movie," Stallone told the Times, in reference to the 1989 movie adaptation starring Michael Keaton as the Caped Crusader. He went on to say, "The action movies changed radically when it became possible to Velcro your muscles on," a clear dig at how the trim Keaton was encased in a sculpted Batsuit for the film. Stallone joked, "I wish I had thought of Velcro muscles myself... "I didn't have to go to the gym for all those years."

Stallone adds that the director Tim Burton's stylish take on the superhero story changed what audiences expected from an action flick: "It was the beginning of a new era. The visual took over. The special effects became more important than the single person. That was the beginning of the end."

It's ironic, then, that Stallone will be going to this year's San Diego Comic-Con -- the center for all things geeky -- to promote his upcoming movie, "The Expendables," which is a true throwback to the action hits of the '80s. In the film, Stallone (who also directed) leads a team of mercenaries to overthrow a corrupt South American dictator. It costars Jason Statham, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke, Terry Crews, and even Stallone's "Rocky IV" nemesis, Dolph Lundgren.

"The Expendables" is also notable for being the first time Stallone has appeared on-screen with fellow '80s icons Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis. Stallone told the Times that each of them had their own on-screen persona which made set them apart from one another: "Arnold was king of the one-liners. Bruce was witty and talkative... And I was pretty silent." He added that their differences made it impossible for him to see himself in his friend's signature roles. "Arnold was relentless, like this perfect machine. People asked if I could have played the Terminator. Are you kidding? Not a chance, I never could have played the Terminator."

As it happens, Bruce Willis will be at Comic-Con this weekend promoting his upcoming movie "Red," which also is an action flick about an aging team of experts. It stars Oscar-winners Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren.

Stallone will preview "The Expendables" at Comic-Con on Thursday, and the movie will muscle its way into movie theaters on August 13.

Sad that Van Damme reject the offer.I think Stallone also should be blame since he proposed the offer to Van Damme without completing the script 1st and the character that he's going to give to Van Damme also not firmed yet and blur.

Oh Stallone also forgotten about Chuck Norris.Oh well since he already got Jet Li for martial arts specialist in his group.

^ I agree.

I think Sly had this in the bag about sequels.

The ones who are not in will definitely be proposed in the next movie.
Mel Gibson, Van Damne, Chuck Norris, etc.

there might not be a sequel tho...

from the name "Expendables", I think most of the cast are going to be dead by the end of the movie, Stallone included tongue.gif

Everyone goes out with a super duper mega big bang laugh.gif

Added on July 27, 2010, 5:09 pmand I won't recommend Chuck to be in the next sequel (if there is)

too many jokes about Chuck Norris already laugh.gif

make Bruce Willis a regular, and more screen time for Arnie, maybe kill a person or two first before ending his scene tongue.gif

I think he did a few supporting roles in some film.

In Be Cool, he is a gay who wanna become an actor in Hollywood
In Doom, he is a badas$ comamnder who infected by the biological virus and kill his own teammate.

Probably because Stallone afraid that The Rock might gets more attraction rather than him? laugh.gif

Everybody forgot Kurt Russel

Remember Tango and Cash?

I just found out Sly did invited Kurt for a role in The Expendable
but Sly was told to send in a letter of invite to Kurt's agent
few days later the agent called back to tell Sly Kurt wasn't interested after Sly refused to send out the letter
hmm.gif so who got the bigger ego here?

and maybe after the success of the movie, many of the stars who rejected Sly's idea previously will be begging him for a role in the sequel (if there is)

But I think we all wait and see how the film will be first... after all, Kurt Russell haven't been acting for a long time...

Kurt Russel need to work out and build some muscle. To me he still got big values even though he's already old.Heck he could take a role as Snake Plisskin if there is a sequel to Escape from LA. Not to mention old snake from PS3's exclusive MGS4 where if he could not make it for Solid(old) snake, big boss also can. biggrin.gif

Stallone: I'm contemplating an 'Expendables' sequel

user posted image

With pre-release surveys for "The Expendables" indicating huge levels of excitement among male filmgoers, director Sylvester Stallone says he's ready to roll on a sequel if investors are willing.

"If this does perform, I think it will open a little more liquidity in funding the sequel," he said. "I have an idea ready to go. People think doing a sequel is easy, but it's not because you need the element of surprise. I'm going to try to do something that's quite radical."

Stallone offered few specifics on what that radical idea might be, but the hyphenate isn't shy about what "Expendables," which is poised to open north of $30 million this weekend, means for his career. In an interview for a story that ran in today's Times, Stallone said he first pitched the movie, which he also co-wrote, at the American Film Market more than two years ago. AFM, held in Santa Monica each November, is traditionally a bazaar of sorts for movies starring actors a little past their prime domestically but well known overseas. But Stallone, who still has plenty of cachet internationally, initially couldn't find investors for "The Expendables."
It was only later in 2008 that independent financier Avi Lerner stepped up to cover the movie's $82-million budget, most through foreign presales. In addition, Lionsgate paid nearly $20 million for rights to distribute the movie -- which co-stars action names such as Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, Jason Statham and Jet Li (and features cameos from classic action heroes Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger) -- in the U.S., Canada and Great Britain.

Of course, big expectations don't always result in big results at the box office, as Lionsgate learned the hard way with "Kick-Ass." But Stallone, who admits he's as nervous as he has ever been before a movie opened, said his fears are eased a bit when he remembers that he broke his neck doing stunts on the set of "The Expendables."

"It's a good omen," he explained. "I didn't get a hangnail on the set of 'Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot.' "

just like 300. I feel so manly just watching it. Manliness +100
but i fear Expendables may appeal more to 1980-90s kids because of the aging heroes.

I watched it on Tuesday thanks to my good fren who gave us the free entrance for its premier screening.

I have to say, its been a long time i have enjoy a movie ala from Perillys Action movie slot back in the late 80st n early 90st.

Non brainer plot n cheesy lines aside, the final action scene will make u believe that one rifle of M-16 will pwn many soldiers and few burst of shotguns will wipe out a gun tower. Kaboom here n there.......it is mindless fun and the good guys win! The end!

For sure ur testosterone level will increase by the time the movie ends. Something which we didnt c much lately in recent movies.

Just came back from the movie and agree with others.
AWESOME!
Car chase scenes, explosions, gun fire, fighting, you have them all and the climax was totally chaos (in a good way). The best action movie I've seen for some time.

Schwarzenegger and Wills' short cameo was also really well done.

There were some really epic parts like the plane destroying an entire army on the bridge and when the black dude used that huge gun for the first time.

5/5

I missed the first few minutes of the movie. By the time I sat down, Statham arrived at his girlfriend's house on a motorbike. What happened before that? It must have something to do with Lundgren.

Did you guys notice that theres this part from the trailer where one of them says something like "What do we have? Four and a half men." seems to be cut off from the movie or something. I also notice some cut scenes...could be because of the swearing. I was surprised none of them mentioned "f**k" or anything like that. The gory parts like heads getting chopped off remains though.

just got back from watching the movie
i give it a 9/10
definitely all actions.....although some parts of the movie isn't logic but that's not the point in the movie
the main point of the movie is guns, crash, planes, the booms! and the all star cast.
and i love terry crews with his BIG guns...smashing all the soldier into pieces...his funny act also make me lol at the ending of the movie

for me...it's pure awesome movie

Overall its a no brainer movie and do u realize the fighting scene is too fast and keep jumping. Too much explosion and killing ppl like stepping on ants.
Overall its an Okay movie but its nothing to WOW about except for the famous actors in the movie.

While I'd like something like Rambo: First Blood Part 2 (Great Plot and supreme action scenes), anything regarding a great plot will always be second.

The only thing left, is to convince the Governator to take a break from administration and get Willis and Stallone together for a 3 man movie. For sure all the money from the world would just go there for a thrilling action movie.

Watched it for a second time. The Expendables delivered what it promised: a slam, bang action extravaganza with some of the biggest action stars of all time. The story is exactly what it needs to be and nothing more…but then again, we knew this anyway.

According to box office news, it topped the box office with an impressive $13.5 million when it opened on Friday.

QUOTE
The Expendables Sequel Will be Hiring New Badasses

With $35 million in the bank in is first weekend, it’s no surprise that the idea of an “Expendables” sequel is looking more and more likely. Not only has the film performed up to industry expectations in the States (on an estimated $80 million budget), but the film still has the overseas markets to invade very soon. As even the dumbest dummyhead knows, Hollywood action movies with big-name action stars almost always performs better overseas than they do at home, and given the wide-ranging cast of “The Expendables” (including major Asian draw Jet Li in third billing), the future looks pretty bright for the musclebound film.

So what’s next? Duh. Stallone is already talking about ideas for a sequel, specifically adding to the cast:

"[The sequel is] plotted out in my mind’s eye. I believe this group has to continue to evolve; it just can’t become the same people. So how do you get new people introduced into the group, and how do you have some of the other people leaving? Those are the challenges."

So it looks like Stallone doesn’t figure to sit still and just carry on with a second “Expendables” movie with the same cast. That said, who do you think should join in on the mayhem in a sequel?

Remember, Jean-Claude Van Damme famously turned a role down, so it’s unlikely Stallone would add him after getting slapped down once already.

So who’s left? Seagal? Jackie Chan? Chris — gasp — Tucker?

It's been a long time since we have an action packed movie like this. The big boom bang is really refreshing!!

The black dude with the big gun, he acted in White Chicks singing that "A Thousand Miles" song... So funny in that movie, so serious in this one! Really nice!

WOW, are you guys fecking blind? Or did the scene at the church with Arnie and John McClane gauge both your eyeballs out due to extreme mangasm so you spend the rest of the hour looking right into your own blood? After looking through the comments here I went in the theater with nearly ZERO EXPECTATIONS except for couple of guys with big biceps with ink blowing up shit real good, but I came out feeling cheated RM11 into a fresh film school graduate's project.

I can't believe you guys see this straight to DVD failfest as a good action movie. And please don't get me wrong, I love mindless action stuff. But if this gets the majority's approval, Bad Boys II should probably be your Citizen Kane. And feck me with all your might Mickey Rourke, what the feck are you doing with Sylvester the 64-yr old clown? Good god, 5 minutes of him are worth more than all the expendables combined.

If a sequel gets greenlighted, which will probably be considering the strong opening weekend, Sylvester the Clown should take up some lessons from Michael Bay on how to conduct the orchestra of mayhem. For the benefit of doubt, maybe it was the relatively cheaper budget compared to recent action flicks that did the damage. Cmon guys, the palace crumbling down felt like a lego model done in a 13" inch Macbook Pro. But still it can't justify that dumbo scene of Austin going down by a 5-minute brushup CGI fire. And no, don't come at me with your spoiler tag rant. This movie has absolutely no spoiler. The only "spoiler" was how Sylvester the Clown (yes this should be his nick from now) tried to cash in with our 80s action movie nostalgia and a 30second cameo by the governator.

The Expendables should be renamed as "Hale Caesar's GF and 100 poor motherfeckers (featuring a short Rambo cameo firing a glock)" there i said a good thing about this bucket of fail

It isn't a trainwreck, be grateful for that. Sylvester did his best to create an action movie and we got them. Very rarely action movies are being developed nowadays with so much "action".

I spotted a Michael Bay fan here laugh.gif

Interesting enough you even give it a 5 out of 10 when the way you reply should be a 3 out of 10 nod.gif

Anyway, what Sly did was old style school action. Compare to any 80s movies of Lundgren, Jean Claude Van-Damme, Arnie, Kurt Russell, Steven Seagal, Chuck Norris and Sly himself - mostly are muscle over brains films. Come on, what movies of the 80s are intelligent at that time?

To hear you mention Michael Bay, I probably guessed you were more towards the 90s action films. Just look at John McTiernan films or even Stephen Hopkins movies - Michael Bay is a style action director. Not to mention, he had overused these styles one too many times that made Bad Boys II not as good as the first one (even though its his signature directing). Bay was good for a while until Pearl Harbor onwards, most of his movies are either alright or bad (The Island is one of those that can be said bad). Transformers is another story - and I believe even that has some mix views too.

But then, different people have different opinions... and that depends on the decade they started to appreciate movies (not saying you do not, just saying different people in different decades appreciate in their own way of that decade)...

Luckily, I go even as far as appreciating the 30s even... and there is so much films I have yet to enjoy (namely, 1927 Fritz Lang's Metropolis - I think Dark City is inspired from there! hmm.gif )

Can't be compare to The A-Team & The Losers - this is seriously pure mindless explosion film that you need to suspend reality to enjoy this. Think old school Steven Seagal movie blend in with Rambo III and you get the idea what The Expendables is all about. laugh.gif

Likewise, interesting enough you brought up John McTiernan but The Expendables had almost zero resemblance to his earlier action films like Die Hard and Predator. Those had bodies flying around as well but in contrast to this film, those action scenes were really well-crafted.

And that's the reason why I brought up Michael Bay because from what I've seen today, Stallone tried too hard to pull off his shooting style to satisfy the modern audience. Those quick edits in-your-face when the action really matters leaving us audience going "err..WTF just happened? Oh yeah, good guy pwns @ lightning speed again"

Cmon, that Jet Li Lundgren fight was almost like watching the F1 Grand Prix live @ Sepang. you know exactly what I'm talking about laugh.gif

QUOTE
Van Damme vs. Jet Li in The Expendables? That Was the Plan…

We’ve all heard from Jean-Claude Van Damme on the reasons  why he didn’t join up with all the other action stars in Sylvester Stallone’s “The Expendables”. According to the Muscles from Brussels, he didn’t like the fact that Stallone couldn’t tell him a lot about his characters, and Van Damme doesn’t do movies where his characters are not fleshed out. Um. I’ll leave that alone and move on…

According to Stallone, though, the true story goes something like this:

"    I wanted to set Jean-Claude against Jet Li, but he didn’t want to lose to Jet.

He didn’t think that was cool. But that’s why it would be cool; to have Jean-Claude beaten by the other man. Hey, they could have a rematch. But Steven Seagal and Van Damme, they weren’t really into our gallows humour.  "

So apparently the Dolph Lundgren part was meant for Van Damme? Because it’s Lundgren’s character who goes off his meds, gets kicked off the team, and ends up fighting with Li in the movie. Though I don’t recall Lundgren “losing” to Li; in fact, he almost won the fight. Almost.

Don’t cry for Van Damme, though. The Muscles from Brussels has yet another “Universal Soldier” film on the horizon, plus an action movie called “Weapon” with Vinnie Jones.

And there is a clip of Van Damme dancing... but I think no need to post it here laugh.gif

Gary Daniels also portrayed Bryan Fury in Tekken smile.gif
A very good British kickboxer with a 21 KO record....sadly he is more involved in B grade movies, but after all he is still an action star XD

One advice while watching this movie, please leave your brains outside the theater. I loved this kind of movies, nonsense action, reminds me ALOT of Commandos from Arnold himself.

Ridiculous body count and not even a scratch on him. It's a very guilty pleasure I must say!

Oh and please stop nit-picking on fight scenes and whatever not, enjoy the whole movie as it is!

i know right.. i mean Sly asked "who sent you" which to me, not really need to be asked.. then when he whisper, and the scene cuts off, usually a twist is coming..y'know like they usually do.. idk, maybe the governator got something to do with it..
but then till the end...ehh?? sweat.gif

no need to stretch one's brain to watch this movie but the action owns even JC's avatar

dont know about growing hairy chest but i would hope sly wouldnt be too politally correct on the female lead. if only someone more eye candy like say in his rambo movies.

then again, i guess sly wanted to help out some of his old buddies (some as his foes in his other movies. too little work for them these days i guess. would like to see MrT (Laurence Tureaud), Appolo Creed in rocky/ u guys know him as the original BA Baracus

sorry [edited]

Quinton Jackson was in the movie version BA.

so we can conclude that dolph lundgren is the king of B movie action star of all time rclxm9.gif rclxm9.gif only B grade action movie can produce 100 body counts unlike the mainstream hollywood action movie flex.gif flex.gif

Just watched this movie, i was almost fall asleep after half way thru.
To me, these 3 movies are the worst movie for this year..

Tekken > Expendables > Airbender(worst)

I give it 4 out of 10. Not worth it for your money.
Maybe it just me..

how can u rate it lower than tekken

although the story line and plot is weak but the action are awesome

at least they are good at what they are suppose to be

which tekken sadly has nothing to offer neither good storyline nor great actions

The movie gets 18 only.

And again, people are dumb enough not to understand what the hell RATINGS ARE FOR.

Then again, you may feel the same way when you become a parent yourself. its sort of natural if you ask me.

The movie gets 18 only.

And again, people are dumb enough not to understand what the hell RATINGS ARE FOR.

Then again, you may feel the same way when you become a parent yourself. its sort of natural if you ask me.

Owh, and same case happened to Kick-Ass. A lady complained it should have been like Superman.

haha.

its funny really. People love making statements and always refuse to do a little bit of research. Like asking. And then we get people like this.

Sheesh. Way to go for ruining my movie experience.

Well, "those" are not real movie-goers.

In any case - if one person crap to me about the violence and vulgarity should be censored even though it's 18 (whatever) rating... they get this

I'm very late to the party, but I've finally watched and reviewed this.

It was okay-lah. The last half-hour of action saved it. But everything that came before was just dumb.

And not the good kind of dumb either. I'd rather watch the first Predator again. That was uber-testosterone-ified action done right.

But that's exactly what people are saying about The Expendables. So I think it's right to compare it to Predator, because Predator is what The Expendables is trying to be.

That's what I meant. The Expendables hypes itself as the most macho and testosterone-packed action movie ever, but it cannot even beat Predator in that department.

Well, yes, Predator gets serious in its 2nd half when all these super manly action men start getting pwned. But before the Predator shows up, it was pure '80s cheeseball action. It was practically self-parody.

This is easily one of the best movies I've seen all year and I've seen plenty.
Probably the best action, adrenaline pumped movie in the last 2-3 years. 80s-90s style action at its best notworthy.gif

Gotta give credit to Stallone for getting all those popular action stars all on one set and making it work.

I watched the movie last night at IOI 9.40pm with my movie buddy. What gets to you is the sound. It all BANG! BANG! BANG! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! The story is pretty B grade to me somehow. Its not fluent from start to end. I think many seen it already right? Here are some points from me.

The scene where Bruce Willis meets Stallone and meets Arnold. That is the highest point of the movie really. Did you guys seriously hear the dialog!!! Its full of fun and reference to their real life!!!! Like how Stallone said he will meet Arnold in a thousand years! And How Arnold says that Stallone likes to play in the jungle!!! I mean holy cow!!! What lines!!! Its every fanboys dream!!

And some point of the movie there are even more references of the dialogs to their real life. Like how Jet Li rants on how hard is him doing 2 times on everything because he is small? And how Dolph is put into a drug abuser character that clearly is a play on his life after being famous.

Dude!!! Randy Couture vs Steve Austin. MMA vs WWE. What more could both sports entertainment stars do in such a movie? They fight of course! Terry Crews is really a weird entry here. I mean i saw him in White Chicks as the misguided black guy trying to be white!!! You could not discount him as a possible action star for his buff body. But his face.... hahahaha. Micky Rourke is his usual "oh so cool" persona. Most only remember him in Iron Man 2. But i remember him in the BMW movies The Follow.

Jason Statham.... Now lets see. Why was he put into a macho girl getter role here? I think its mainly because of how he didn't get to show his ladies skills in The Italian Job up close. But... hey he does that too in Tranporter series. Kicking 5 butts for a lady is anyones dream of impressing and getting the fairer sex. Admit it!!!

The ending is a surprise. But its not really a big surprise. Some unfinished/ unspoken mini stories in this one begs for a second one. I dunno about you guys, but the meeting of the action heroes in this movie made my tiring day worth it. Some of the action scenes do seem like it came from the other action movie Shoot Em Up starring Clive Owen.

I don't care how it is rated badly. Really because once you see these single actors there, i automatically remember what movie they did. And how far they have come. Even my action fan buddy could not make out why the dialog in the church is so damn funny!!!When the action stops, its like these actors were reflecting their past. Its really an action man movie fan dream come true.

Watched it for the third time at TGV 1Utama (damn the audio sucks over there).
I noticed that Sly, Bruce, and Arnie are never in the same shot together when they were in the church. Even when they are, it only lasted a second and you can never see Arnie's face (the camera was focusing the back of his head). I heard theres a reason for that, like Arnie shot is parts separately or something... I don't know.

QUOTE
Stallone Wants Willis To Be The Villain In The Expendables II

I feel so out of touch. It turns out that 64-year-old Sylvester Stallone is on Twitter and I’m not. At least he’s using his fledgling account in service of the greater good. One of his first posts not only dealt with the inevitable sequel to “The Expendables”, but it hinted at who Sly would like to play the villain. He wrote,

"Had dinner with Bruce Willis last night. I want him in EXPENDABLES II as a super villain. What do you think?"

Here’s what I think, Oh hell f***ing yes! Even though the previews gave away most of the scene with Stallone, Schwarzenegger, and Willis, that didn’t stop me from giggling like a schoolgirl the entire time they were onscreen together. I’d love to see Rambo and John McClane face off again.

Willis doesn’t play bad guys often, but this would be a perfect opportunity. He was already established as a shady CIA spook, and who better to be a super villain? I liked the “The Expendables” a lot, but one issue I had with it was that Eric Roberts, as the ex-CIA spook, wasn’t as bad a bad guy as he should have been. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some Eric Roberts, and he was rad, but his character could have been used better, and apparently Stallone wants to rectify that situation. This would also take some of the residual “Cop Out” stink off of Willis.

unlikely that steven seagal would be in if they use the same producer..

steven seagal was so close to be in the expandable until they choose a producer that steven had worked with before and he had conflict with the guy so he pulled out as he refused to ever work with the producer again..

but really hope to see chuck norris, vandeam ,steven seagal and wesley snipe to be in it too

Expendables' director's cut on the way

user posted image

By now, Sylvester Stallone’s star-studded actioner The Expendables has generated enough buzz to secure a sequel.

True enough, earlier on, the action star-turned-filmmaker voiced his wish of having Bruce Willis on board again as “a super villain” in “Expendables II”.

However, before that happens, expect to see an extended director’s cut DVD for The Expendables and a making-of documentary titled Inferno: The Making of The Expendables.

The 64-year-old announced the progress of these two items through his Twitter recently, estimating that six months would be needed before the director’s cut can be released.

The good news is the documentary will be available much earlier.

"Inferno, which is the documentary, will be out soon - it's hard core - everybodys (sic) on it," he wrote.

It was indeed hardcore stuff, from what we have heard. Part of the documentary will show how Steve Austin and Stallone got injured on the set. The latter was even told that he needed to undergo a spinal surgery to fix his injury.

What’s more, Stallone revealed that he has just completed doing the commentary for the DVD of The Expendables.

“Turned out great, think you'll like it,” he tweeted.

The Expendables II Will Bring The Dead Back To Life

Bruce Willis may be waist deep in press for his upcoming action-comedy “RED”, but today he let a little tidbit slip about the much talked about sequel to “The Expendables”. Sylvester Stallone has already let it be known that he wants Willis to play the villain in that movie.

The good folks over at Comingsoon asked Willis if there was a place in “The Expendables 2” for his “RED” costar Karl Urban, who is the next Judge Dredd, a role Stallone played 15 years ago. That might be entertaining to see, two Judge Dredds side by side on the big screen. Willis said,

QUOTE
“I talked to Sly and he’s going for all the marbles this time, and he’s going to get everybody in this time. . . Even Stone Cold Steve Austin who took two bullets in the last film, he’s coming back, too. Hopefully, they’ll start shooting it while we’re young enough to survive.”

While his response didn’t really answer the question about Urban, it would seem to imply that Willis is on board for the second “Expendables”. So, if you weren’t excited enough about “RED”, now you have that to fantasize about. Maybe this time around they can get Bolo Yeung

Will Van Damme Fight Crime in Dragon Eyes, or Play the Villain in Expendables 2?

user posted image

As you’ll recall, Jean-Claude Van Damme famously turned down a role in Sylvester Stallone’s “The Expendables”, the action film that proved over-the-hill muscle-bound actors could still bring the wood if given the chance. (He was eventually replaced with Dolph Lundgren.) Now with “Expendables 2″ on the horizon, word is Stallone has offered Van Damme the role of the film’s main villain.

Then again, ever since “Expendables” hit and word of an “Expendables 2″ came to the surface, pretty much every former action hero from the ’80s and ’90s have been rumored to be taking part in the movie in some form or another. Frankly, who knows what’s real or not, especially with the sequel still in very early stages.

We know this, though: What’s Playing says uber producer Joel Silver has offered the co-starring role in the mixed-martial arts movie “Dragon Eyes” to Van Damme if he wants it. The film will star MMA star Cung Le (he’s been in everything from “Tekken” to probably his biggest high-profile gig to date, one of the survivors on Christian Alvart’s “Pandorum”), and will find him taking on police corruption on the mean streets of New Orleans.

If Van Damme does sign on, he’ll be working with director John Hyams again. Hyams last directed Van Damme in the straight-to-DVD sequel “Universal Soldier: Regeneration”, and has proven himself to be pretty good with casting MMA fighters, having come up on the circuit himself as a filmmaker. Needless to say, you can pretty much expect “Dragon Eyes” to be one big fight movie, especially with Cung Le (below, whupping some dude’s ass in the ring) in the lead. I’m not saying you shouldn’t expect anything beyond a glorified MMA scrimmage, but I am saying not to hold your breath.

Con Air’s Simon West Will Direct The Expendables 2

user posted image

Well, this was a no-brainer. Simon West, director of loud and ludicrous action movies, has signed on to direct the sequel to Sylvester Stallone’s “The Expendables”, a film that was, let’s face it, overly loud and overly ludicrous itself.

Besides “Con Air” with Nicolas Cage, West is also the director of “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” with Angelina Jolie, and more recently, the remake of “The Mechanic” with Jason Statham and Ben Foster. He’s currently directing Cage in “Medallion”, a “Taken”-esque thriller that also co-stars Malin Akerman.

For “The Expendables 2″, the original cast of Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Terry Crews and Jet Li are all expected back.

The plot for the sequel finds a member of the team murdered during a mission, prompting the others to seek vengeance on yet another ruthless dictator in need of killing. Also along for the ride is the dead operator’s daughter, who will lend a feminine touch to the all-testosterone team.

'The Expendables 2' Cast Now Includes John Travolta, Chuck Norris' Beard and Chuck Norris

user posted image

NU Boyana Studios CEO David Varod has confirmed through Collider and Novinite that the studios has locked in Chuck Norris' beard to co-star in action/martial-arts super-nova "The Expendables 2," which starts shooting in Bulgaria this September.

Varod also confirmed that as a condition of appearing, NU Boyana also must bring on board Chuck Norris himself for what was negotiated as "roundhousing-kicking services to be rendered" and also John Travolta - or, as he's probably soon to be known among the never-ever-to-be-collectively-or-individually-f***ed-with cast, "That Guy From 'Broken Arrow' With The Chin."

This wasn't a cast that needed be any bigger whatsoever in star power or sheer lean muscle mass -- if it grows much more, the cast party will develop its own gravitational pull -- but let's recap: that makes original "Expendables" writer/director/star Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, Randy Couture, Charisma Carpenter, Jet Li, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Terry Crews and Arnold Schwarzenegger all either rumored or confirmed for this round.

It bears noting that it's been all but confirmed that the film will focus largely upon the pursuit of Willis' villainous Mr. Church, and that writers David Agosto and Ken Kaufman also looked to expand Schwarzenegger's cameo from the first film.

For the record, casting Van Damme makes some nice amends for a missed opportunity the first go-round. Stallone was in talks with Van Damme to star in the first movie, but Van Damme perceived a lack of substance to his character and passed it up. Later, when the film made a tremendous $274.5-million gross on an $80-million budget despite lukewarm responses from critics, Van Damme publicly said that he wished he'd signed on when he had the chance.

Still, the Muscles from Brussels needn't weep. That doughy thing that's been wearing Steven Seagal's face for years turned down a role over past differences with producer Avi Lerner. Wesley Snipes couldn't take an offered role either, on account of being in prison. His role of Hale Caesar was reworked first for Forest Whitaker, then 50 Cent following a Whitaker scheduling conflict, and finally went to former NFL star Terry Crews.

"The Expendables 2" is set to hit theaters Aug. 17, 2012.

A Crap Ton Of New Expendables 2 Pics

user posted image

“The Expendables 2” is currently shooting in Bulgaria, and a slew of set photos have popped. Excited for the sequel or not—I’ll be the first one admit that there are glaring flaws and that it could, and maybe should have been way better—the idea of Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Scott Adkins, and more in a single movie is damn exciting.

You aren’t going to learn anything super important from these pictures, most are posed group photos that features a bunch of dudes giving an enthusiastic thumbs up to the camera. But there are also shots of giant, muscle-bound bros with large machine guns, both of which bode well for any action movie.

Take a look for yourself below. My personal favorite is the one of Van Damme holding a gun to his own head and smiling about it. It’s a good time.

“The Expendables 2” is directed Simon “Con Air” West, and is scheduled to blow up theaters nationwide August 17, 2012.

Stallone! Willis! Schwarzenegger! Norris! Van Damme! Hemsworth!

Wait. Hemsworth? Thor? No, as it turns out, just his little brother. Oh well. Apparently it’s a big enough role that Liam Hemsworth gets his name up on the marquee poster along with the rest of the bigger named Expendables like Stallone and company, even though he doesn’t show up in this poster. No idea who the girl is, though I suspect she’s the daughter of Mickey Rourke’s character, Tool. Rourke, it’s been reported, is a no-show for the second film.

Also a no-show? Jet Li, even though his name is on the marquee, so that means he’s definitely in the sequel. Couldn’t they have photoshopped him in there kicking someone in the face?

In any case, the film arrives late next year, August 17th, with Simon West directing.

The Expendable 2 Teaser Trailer Flexes its Short but Sweet Muscles

user posted image

With Christmas and the Holidays on the way, and trailers for Warner Bros.’ “The Dark Knight Rises” and Fox’s “Prometheus” due any day now, with their releases sure to send the fanboy community all aflutterin’ for quite some time, Lionsgate and Millennium Films would like to you know that they have a pretty big 2012 title on the way, too. That would be the muscle-tastic “The Expendables 2″. Check out the first teaser trailer for the action film below. It’s a set-up trailer for the film’s roster (though I did snicker when they flashed the lesser Hemsworth’s name and then showed him like he’s one of the big boys, hee hee). By the way, everyone gets a machinegun and their second of screentime to look all badass, but Jet Li gets to sit there moping? Lame.

QUOTE
The Expendables are back and this time it’s personal… Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone), Lee Christmas (Lee Statham), Yin Yang (Jet Li), Gunnar Jensen (Dolph Lundgren),Toll Road (Randy Couture) and Hale Caesar (Terry Crews) — with newest members Billy the Kid (Liam Hemsworth) and Maggie (Yu Nan) aboard — are reunited when Mr. Church (Bruce Willis) enlists the Expendables to take on a seemingly simple job. The task looks like an easy paycheck for Barney and his band of old-school mercenaries. But when things go wrong and one of their own is viciously killed, the Expendables are compelled to seek revenge in hostile territory where the odds are stacked against them. Hell-bent on payback, the crew cuts a swath of destruction through opposing forces, wreaking havoc and shutting down an unexpected threat in the nick of time — six pounds of weapons-grade plutonium; enough to change the balance of power in the world. But that’s nothing compared to the justice they serve against the villainous adversary who savagely murdered their brother. That is done the Expendables way….

Providing the muscle this time around are Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jet Li, Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, and Scott Adkins.

Simon West provides the explosions, due out in theaters August 17, 2012.

Are you insanely excited about “The Expendables 2″? If not, then you probably should be. The recently-released teaser — which you can find embedded beyond this passage — is pretty darn awesome. In order to keep the momentum going, Lionsgate has released an official poster for the upcoming balls-out actioner. It, too, is pretty darn awesome. Why take my word for it — see for yourself by averting your attention to the giant image nestled below.

“The Expendables 2″ opens on August 17th, 2012.

Will The Expendables 2 Be Rated R After All?

user posted image

The guys at StalloneZone indicates: Yes.

The site (aka “The #1 Sylvester Stallone Fan Site in the World!”) claims to have gotten word from Stallone himself, saying this:

QUOTE
After taking in all the odd rumors and hearsay, EXPENDABLES II is an R.
So there you have it. According to a site that claims to be the #1 Stallone fan site in the world, Stallone himself told them that “The Expendables 2″ will sport an R rating and not the PG-13 rating that was previously rumored, before being confirmed by Stallone himself.

But now Stallone says all that confirmation (which he sent into AICN himself, by the way), was just “odd rumors and hearsay”. Yeah, I don’t think Stallone quite knows what “rumors” and “hearsay” means, but then again, he can beat me up, so whatever, Sly.

“The Expendables” franchise, what with their stuffing of former glory days cinematic heroes, ceased to be anything that can even remotely be taken seriously after they added Chuck Norris. As such, I didn’t really care too much if the movie was PG-13 or R, but apparently lots and lots of you out there do care. This, if true, should help you sleep better at nights.

I wonder how Chuck Norris, the instigator of the PG-13 conversation, will respond to this, since if true, it’ll mean “The Expendables 2″ will look a lot like “The Expendables”, which means, yes, exploding bodies…

Come on. It’s obvious, no? The moment the synopsis and their 1st line-up poster were out, I already guessed that the Asian guy will be the one going down. In fact, if you look at their line-up poster, you will noticed that Jet Li is not in it and the new-kid-from-the-block, Liam, is in it!

They included too much 'epic' action scenes in the trailer, just like the latest Spiderman trailer. It generates hype, yes, but will be bad for the actual movie release because the surprise element wouldn't be there anymore.

the finale could be better...

it feels like they put up alot of budgets in the beginning and middle scenes then all of a sudden realized over budget, then made a quick and not so epic ending...

Rob Van Damme has been wasted here... could have done better as the "Vilain"

but i'm glad that he made that flying spinning kick... damn classic sial... thumbup.gif

at least all of them get to strut their 'trademark' style.

simple plot, all die hard nolan fans no need to check this else complain must smash head on the wall. No bigger ultra CGI/IMAX to wow kids, all old fashion, brutal (quite good choreographed) style fighting.

Enjoyed the jokes but disappointed with the lack of action. Too much easy frags in the movie. Jet Li should've been more involved.

Any cuts?

the first 30minute opening was a eye catcher. the action part was good, but the acting part was not as good as the first expendables( I compare with the first series only lah) , I'm talking about the sniper guy.

Overall I felt the movie is worth watching if you're a action die hard fans, you wouldn't be watching if you're not right. and you can't fall asleep during the movie, unless you're not die hard fans of it.
Just the last scene fighting with villain is too easy to win at the end.

* 1 thing, the film is grainy, can feel the motion picture style. Love it. smile.gif

You don't have to watch the first movie and there are no cuts.

Its a great movie for what it is. But I feel that the first one is a bit better. The climax from the first movie is miles better. At least there's a sense of urgency. They have to save the lady, wait for Stallone to come back before blowing up the place, take on an entire army, and stop the boss from escaping. Here, the army is much smaller, and instead of escaping, the boss sticks around for them to come and get him. The fighting between Stallone vs Van Damme and Statham vs Adkins is also disappointing (I felt that it ended too quickly and there weren't enough punches thrown to feel the pain) compared to Jet Li vs Lundgren and even Statham vs basketball players from the first movie (at least Jet Li has a kick ass fight scene before dissapearing). But it makes up by having all the stars blowing things up and cracking jokes. Van Damme makes a pretty good villain and Lundgren has also become a much more likeable character after what he did in the first movie. None of the action here comes close to being as good as the ones from the first movie where Stallone and Statham blows up the army using a plane and Crews coming out of nowhere with the big gun at the end.

So yeah... 10/10 for the first movie and 9/10 for this. You'll like it if you know what to expect.

When Stallone said that Lundgren was a chemistry graduate and later worked as a bouncer and met a girl, I thought it was made up for the movie. But its actually true in real life. ohmy.gif

Can't believe that this movie only earned $28.8 million during the weekend compared to $34.8 million from the first movie. I was expecting it to make at least double because of all the hype now.

Anyway... there's already talks about getting Sean Connery, Nic Cage, Clint Eastwood, Harrison Ford and Wesley Snipes to join Expendables 3.

Sean Connery definitely a big NO - it has been years since so many studios/directors/producers wants him to get him out of retirement but fail. Clint Eastwood would be interesting if they make Dirty Harry jokes in it. Nic Cage likely jump into it... not sure about Harrison Ford if that appeals to him but Wesley Snipes for sure...

Yup - he's really a Chemistry Graduate (learn that from Universal Soldier Blu-Ray documentary about Lundgren and Van Damme featurette)

i don't care if they call it giving work to old actors

hell, they were entertain us shit back then,

these days have to content with some stupid emo vampire shite or some kids running around supposedly surviving by killing (what action?) each other or even some movie pretending to be 'thoughtful' brainy movie doh.gif

at times, i'll take this old school type of action anytime.

Some may not appreciate this type of movies, hell, its about time off to be entertained, suspended in disbelief.

But same goes to Chuck Norris as well who didn't get into movies for like...a decade plus or something? Stallone did manage to bring him.

Seriously, i cant believe they insert one of the Chuck Norris jokes inside the movie. I nearly spit my drink man. Same goes to Caesar metro style.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie very much as it was just so entertaining. The actions were as much as the jokes. This movie rocks and what made it better was the movie patrons, expressive in nature, which was awesome. rclxms.gif

Good stuff. You can laugh at the jokes if you seen those 80s movie starred by them. Chuck Norris is a surprised. Too bad Jet Li scene is too little.
