I got an old pc.. celeron900mhz 128ram, everything integrated.
Fail to install windows xp... now wanna try open source, but not much knowldege in it.
Any suggestion and necessary steps?
I read an article can use damnsmalllinux and boot it, then can use already.
*
With DSL (DamnSmallLinux), there's nothing to configure in order to use.
Just burn the iso (approx 50mb) into a CD and boot from it.

you can't get rid of dependencies absolutely.

some packages would have dependencies that's outside normal repository scope.

using package manager might be able to solve some, but not all.

however, when installing a distro, installing everything would help a bit in that.

install everything is stupid. you support to install the package that needed.

If we want to have minimal dependencies trouble, installing everything would help a bit.

And I've never thought that installing everything is stupid if I have the hard disk space for that.

Kons, which distro that using less resource? Can suggest for me..
*
Since you're an Ubuntu "client", can try the Xubuntu or Ubuntu "Alternate CD" installation.
They are using significant less resource than the original Ubuntu.

The Alternate is for what?
*
QUOTE
The Ubuntu Alternate CD uses the text installer instead of the new GUI installer. It needs less system memory and permits advanced installs with preseeded options as well as LVM or RAID disk configurations.

Can run with minimal system specs. smile.gif

this might be a noob question...
say if i want to experience using linux, can i install it on a pc that have other os like windows? (using diff drives)

can linux accept ntfs?
*
you can install it on a pc that already has an existing os.
linux does not accept ntfs, but you can always create a new filesystem in the partition.
cheers.

who says that linux doesn't accept ntfs? linux support read-only ntfs by default and you can use ntfs-3g (linux software or module) in order
to enable read-write ntfs in linux. It is stable. the common filesystem for linux is ext3 and reiser (for suse).
*
I was just trying to say, GNU/Linux can't be run on NTFS.
Of course it is possible to read/write to NTFS from Windows, even Windows can read/write ext3 nowadays.

How about the RAM?

You can use normal desktop ubuntu if you have more than 128mb of RAM, if not, you have to look for ubuntu alternate.

PC3 - 256mb

where can i get ubuntu alternate

by the way .. i have ubuntu 6.06 and 7.04

tried on Pentium 233 ..but got stuck/hang .....

what is the system requirement ?
*
Go to ubuntu website, when you are selecting the version to download, check the box which indicate you need the "Alternate Desktop CD" version.
Normal ubuntu won't be able to run with only 64mb RAM.

I remember reading there's a driver that allows the linux to write to NTFS drives. The new Ubuntu 7.10 (out in a few days) has this installed by default (NTFS-3G).

Anyone has experience in using this?

Is there a reason why CentOS is not included in the list?

Does windows online driver search ever work? tongue.gif

If you know your broadcom NIC model, just go to the vendor website and see if they release any linux drivers for it.
If not, try with ndiswrapper.

Anyone can susgest a distro with out of the box compatibility with windows xp network n share folders? I tried using ubuntu and variants of it but it seems to always fail.

I thought you just need samba to work with Windows regardless of the distro.
No?

Dude I am done looking. I was looking for nearly ten days for the solution. Am not looking for another 'solution' if someone has a clear cut method just state it. Cuz all those worthless sites assume it naturally works all the damn time and don't have 'if installation fails or samba fails to start' help.
*
What seems to be the problem?
What error message did you get?

QUOTE(janica @ Jul 7 2008, 07:29 PM)
Hi all linux sifu,

I have been working on open source php, cgi, pl and sql scipt on my windows machine and then need to upload the files to the Linux server all the times using an internet connection to get the output.

I recently purchase a new cpu. Kindly recommend me a good linux OS for my scripting without requiring me to connect the internet at home. I would like to know the output immediately on my linux machine. Once the output is working fine, I would upload the final scripting and sql to the real linux server.

Also, I would like to install vmware/ virtual pc on this linux machine as well.

I'm thinking of installing the fedora. Would fedora able to do the tasks I mention above? Hope to hear the feedback from you all. Thx.
*
Of course. You have to run vmware/xen on the Fedora.
Virtual PC is only meant for Windows platform.

Probably you would need apache to be installed in the Fedora as well.
Which SQL are you using? psql? mysql?
Either one, it's available under Fedora too.
