This should work well with non JB'ed 3G iphones. I reckon this is called ad-hoc as setoyo stated. Could be tethering too.

"A mobile ad-hoc network (MANET) is a kind of wireless ad-hoc network, and is a self-configuring network of mobile routers (and associated hosts) connected by wireless links"

"Tethering in cellular wireless is the connection of a non-mobile device (e.g. desktop computer, notebook computer, laptop computer), to a mobile device (e.g. cell phone, PDA) for the purpose of wireless Internet access by the non-mobile "tethered" device".

If you on a Mac.

Try use iphoneModem.
On your Airport- click create network- you will see your address say "iphone Modem"
Click on. No need to set any ip address.
iphone modem done everything for you.

Another app called pdaNet on Cydia works the same.

Here what you should do:

On MacOS, first download and copy iPhoneModem to the Applications folder on the Mac, open and click "Connect" and then open "Modem" on the iPhone.
Make sure that on the iPhone you are connected to a WiFi network named "iPhoneModem", created by the Mac application.
That's it, you can start surfing the web.

Setoyo Bro,

Did not really see an answer to Bro Kasman query whether the iphone3G can be used as a modem to a windows laptop.
Appreciate some help pls. The iphone would act as a wireless router or an iphone modem using its 3G. The router would be a better option as no wires will be involve. Thanks for some info.

Okey, For Bro Kasman query whether iphone3g can used as a modem.... YES...
it call iphone modem.. or last time, Netshare.... by using this application the iphone3g acting as modem...

BTW, this tutorial only for ppl to connect their iphone3g to laptop via built in wifi... using adhoc method..
Will find a time, to place tutorial: iphone3g as a modem.. (coming soon)

Peace..

PDANET is definitely THE fastest/troublefree way to go as far as tethering is concerned... and it's FREE! can't beat that!

any1 read this news here?

QUOTE
MobileCrunch reveals that during an interview at the Web 2.0 Summit, AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph De La Vega confirmed that AT&T would be offering an official tethering option for the iPhone "soon".

Tethering is the process by which you allow the iPhone to act as a 3G modem for your laptop. This would allow you to share the iPhone's cellular connection with your laptop.

A 3rd party tethering option called NetShare briefly appeared in the App Store before it was removed by Apple. AT&T traditionally charges an additional $30/month for this tethering option on their other smartphones. MacRumors has separately heard that this tethering capability is expected to be built into the 2.2 firmware.

Peace..

looking forward to see the tutorial on iphone as modem. Thanks.

I however, trying to figure out what are the occasions when the "ICS seed Iphone Via wifi" become useful.
??
if you have a laptop, and connected to internet (via cable) , just use the laptop..
unless you don't have a laptop, and no WIFI network. ANd your friend is connected via CABLE, then this become useful.

Hope you don't mind. Found this on the net. Hopefully is helpful.

iModem (Windows Only) Now Lets You Tether Over USB Cable.

Tethering your iPhone for internet use can be a real life-saver when there's no Wi-Fi around, but for those who aren't the most tech-savy, the tinkering with proxy settings and the like can be a little too complicated. Thankfully those times may be coming to a close. Unofficial tethering app iModem has just released an update that lets you tether your iPhone via USB cable.
Previous to this, tethering apps used the iPhone's Wi-Fi capabilities to act as a Wi-Fi hotspot that was connected to the cellular data network. The new iModem is the first tethering app to change this. Instead of messing with settings, you can just connect your iPhone to your laptop through USB cable to share internet.

For iphone as a modem will be soon.. Need to test...
The Methodology iphone as a modem:
Internet ---->Iphone3G ---->Tethering (Via Wifi/Cable) ---->Laptop/PC

When ICS seed iphone via wifi become useful?
ppl like me, who dont have a wifi router/ap stuff.
Just got a laptop that have built-in wifi and 3g broadband..
I subscribe unlimited broadband RM98/month and use usb modem to get connected to the internet..
So i want to split my internet connection, so both got the internet access..
Using adhoc methodology give me/us opportunity to share the internet connection..
This method:
USB modem ----> Laptop(built in Wifi) ---(adhoc)---> Iphone3g

Peace... icon_rolleyes.gif
Im no expert in networking guys, just helping each other...
so helping hand will be appreciate.. TQ notworthy.gif

how about the other way around?
can the laptop be connected with Iphone  so that it works as a modem or wifi server (not sure what is the right term) ?
*
It's called tethering. This function will come out next month in the latest OS version 3 firmware.

Added on May 20, 2009, 11:17 amVista ICS is more stable compared to Windows XP. In any case make sure you guys update your Windows OS first, especially Windows XP or else you will get connection but still no internet connection.

After connection, please do a ping from your iphone, if you can ping but can't surf, might be your PC/Laptop firewall blocking port 53 so you might need to configure to allow connections.

thanks a lot for the info...
but i too have do some googling on this adhoc network...
and for the website you gave me, i'm pretty sure that's what i did to the settings...
but yet i still cant online on my iphone once its connected... not sure what's the reason...
but i'll try it again tonight when i reach home as i'll be in my campus library till midnight...
anyway, thanks for the info...^^

Added on May 25, 2009, 12:08 pmanother thing i would like to mention is that my laptop does not connects to the modem directly, it connects to a switch and the switch is connected to the modem...
does this have any difference compared to the laptop connects directly to the modem?

and does creating a wep password have anything to do with the ip of my iphone when i connect it to my laptop or its just simply protect your ad-hoc network from being use by unauthorized people?

again, thanks in advance...^^

Hi all. Just wanna share my experience. For me, the best tethering apps out there (on jailbreak iphone of course) is PdaNet. It's free for 30 days and u can use ur iphone 3g broadband internet to share with ur laptop.

How to install:
1. Open Cydia, search for PdaNet and hit install.
2. Open PdaNet website http://www.junefabrics.com/desktop/ and install the desktop client.
3. Open PdaNet on ur iPhone, click settings and set PdaNet to connect tru USB cable.
4. Open PdaNet client on ur laptop and click connect.
4. Done! Enjoy ur 3G connection from ur laptop.

*This applies for Windows (XP or Vista x86 and x64)
*U can also use wifi connection if u forgot to bring ur usb cable

I just don't hv time to explain in detail. But if u can use iPhone, meaning that u are somewhat tech savvy and I believe u can sort this out. Just one thing to keep in mind, iPhone OS3.0 support tethering by default (find that in the Settings>Network) and u dont really need any 3rd party software. BUT u may be charged again for tethering usage even though u already subscribed for unlimited 3G (dont know if this really true?). Cheers!

not to be an ass or anything, but if you already know that os3.0 natively supports tethering, what's the poing of sharing some third-party tool that only works on jb'ed phones?

Coz the official tethering doesn't work for me. Once I pushed the button to "On" suddenly it disappeared. I wonder where it's gone? Secondly, as I said before, u may be charged again for using tethering even if u already subscribed to unlimited 3G.
