Well, all watches regardless of their selling price, Omega, Rolex, JLC, VC, PP etc, is just a wristwatch. They may be nice to look, well designed watches but the only purpose, to tell time.

Yes I do own G-Shock, the cheapest of them all, it does more than telling time, i.e. functions like multiple alarms, stopwatch, countdown timer, perpetual calendar. Han dphone, MP3, PDA does tell time too.  flex.gif

However, I do admire the marvellous engineering perspective in automatic/manual movement watches. I can’t imagine a small tiny piece of machine can run/wind by its own. If nicely taken care of, it can pass down generation to generation.

It all boils down to interest and preference. Someone might own a Mercedes, but I drive a Honda, it brings me to point A to point B as well.  icon_rolleyes.gif

Agreed with you views ck77. I have on my hand rite now a omega constellation pie pan 1962 which i got from my dad. It was not running initially but after servicing and also polishing (i did it locally), she run like new and quite accurate, thus far..no major replacement to the parts and i did not refurbish just to maintain its originallity! like you said..i also wonder how this watch can still keep time for 2 generations without hassle! i wish i can pass down to my kids later! biggrin.gif

what is the oldest watch that your dad has in his collections? At least that watch could prove the brand's reliability!

IIRC, he has a PP that's about 30 years old...he also has a Submariner (grey dial) for about 30 years already...

the old watches he keeps it in the bank and I dont get to see it that often...so i'm not too sure..

You must be lucky la then..by the way, there was one time i read an article in the Star paper (couple of month ago) on this one old guys who is watch collectors. he told reader that he has PP, omega etc ..similar to your dad..He also keep his watch in the bank for safety after his earlier collections were rob!

dont tell me your dad is the one in the article!...becoz he said his kids and wife dont know bout watches and no point give them the watch later!hehe rolleyes.gif

You are right. But i'm not here to talk about why people want to own a RM50K or more watch. I'm all for its engineering and design as well. I collect Hot Wheels cars which is quite nonsense to many!! Till now, the only watch that mesmerises me is the jaeger lecoultre gyrotourbillon. I saw it was on sale mid last year at Sincere KLCC, and spent some time staring at the thing. Much to the amusement of the guard there. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTj__XKPl5M

I saw the first prototype in Malaysia at the Sincere watch event. I didn't know why no one was watching it, but i really spent whole 10 minutes there watching this thing go. Until a curious crowd started to push me back! hehehe. I still have all those bochures and books from the event. My first love for these exclusive watches have to be Franck Muller's Reverso series. I specifically like the art pieces where they have hand drawn enamel potraits at the reverse section. Now both these brand rank very high on purchase if i could. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVciFi3iAlg&NR=1

Also the facination of grandfather clock style gongs in a watch. I'm lucky to hear one in fuction last time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=On0-UzEoZTI&feature=related

Also would you buy this one if you could? hahaha http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGZlkc66bis&feature=related

How often do u guys service your watches? Is servicing only required for automatic watches? How much does it cost roughly?

When i bought my Tag, i was told 2-3 years once and it cost around Rm100 or Rm200. However, i read a watch collector forum in lowyat and he said it cost RM600? True? unsure.gif

Btw, all the while i thought automatic watches need to be worn for it to continue running but recently i read in the manual that we can manually wind it. Which will be better, wrist movement or wind it?

In normal circumstances is 5 years for normal usage. But if the watch is been inaccurate or stop often then that's time to bring in for service. Cost depend on manufacturer to manufacturer. But local competent watchmaker should be able to service it at lower cost.

I've yet to service any of my watches, perhaps someone here could share their experiences.

Both manual wind and wrist movement could wind the watch. If you need to ensure it is fully wind, is better to manual wind it yourself. How do you know when it is fully wound? Slowly wind the crown until you feel the resistance. icon_rolleyes.gif

I see. Is there such thing as over winding? Does it spoil the watch?

Yes bro, when you feel the resistance then don't force it anymore. You may break whatever part inside nod.gif

Whoa, that's scary. How hard is this resistance u mean? I did wind my watch this morning and i did feel some slight resistance but i did not apply any force throughout the winding process. Worried whether i broke anything unsure.gif

just wear it everyday...or if you cant, wind it to about 20 revolutions and it's more than enough....i dont know about other watches but rolexes will start moving on the 21st revolution...
Actually i did stop my windings when i noticed the movement. It was 20+ movements but lesser then 36 ( did not count accurately). Does it mean when it starts moving, it is fully wound? Or just partially?

Another thing, assuming the watch is running now but i feel that it might stop somewhere throughout the night, can i wind it? Or must i wait for it to stop 100%?

Btw, nice PP u got there biggrin.gif
