I think Maradona is too heavily dependent on Messi to circulate the ball around. Veron's erratic passing show doesn't help him much too. Messi appeared very jaded against Mexico, I'm not sure whether or not he will continue running 90 minutes in next match sad.gif

messi is the greatest decoy in today's football, even if he never score he always attract two or three defender away and open space for the other player.

messi in an ordinary team is enough to cause problem to any opponent, but this argentina team have several other world class hitman sniffing on the chance created by messi's run, this make them so dangerous. the problem with the team is the defense, walter samuel need to be fit for the germany clash to marshal that defense to stop german brilliant counter attack.

yup.. notice how 3-4 defenders came towards messi, nailing him down.. a few times i really wished mexico get their red card for playing so rash.. mad.gif

german wont be soft towards argentine.. seeing how good their tactics are vs england u know they are gonna push themselves more when they vs argentina...

let's just hope they can survive it, if not it will be over soon next mth, 7th March will be D day... sleep.gif

The problems popped out when Messi didn't continue running. He still creates chance for his teammates, and for himself too, but I think such a small man have had too much football in recent seasons.

The other glaring problem is how Messi spent much more time away from opponents' penalty box, rather than threatening their goal. Again, Veron is at fault here.

messi have not being scoring for quite some time now, it is going to to end badly on one team when he rediscover the touch and unleash a few goal into the net.

Veron isn't to blame here. He didn't start the last match and Messi was still spending more time in midfield than in the penalty box. It's a tactical decision by Maradona actually. What it does is that it allows Argentina to penetrate any teams central midfield with Messi's dribbling ability. Sure it means he scores less goals but Argentina are not lacking in the department so it isn't an issue.

Messi, with his 'top' level fitness, could never get to dribble past his 3-4 markers. At this rate, I only hope that Maradona drop him altogether for next match, and give Aguero a chance instead. Messi need a rest.

But the problem is Veron has been below par with his passing. So it is understandable that Maradona is forced to depend on Messi to be another playmaker, asking him to drop deep more.

The last match when Veron was dropped from 1st eleven proved Maradona's dependency on Messi to be the playmaker. Not that he is not good enough, but he is not fit enough to do that job.

Yes, Argentina don't have problems to score goals. But can we say they've been convincing enough?

i think argentina have been convincing, they score and win against four team with very different style of play, only the defense are in doubt.

Messi isn't required to dribble pass 3-4 people everytime. Just his immediate 1 or 2 markers. The advantage is that if he gets through, the opposition has a serious problem to deal with with a flat backline being exposed.

Maradona actually plays Veron depending on the opposition. Veron didn't start against South Korea but started against both Greece and Nigeria. Veron isn't able to cover as much ground given his age so when more running is needed in midfield Maxi comes in with a change in shape. I think the idea is to use Veron when the opposition sit off and defend deep. Argentina is guaranteed possession in those games and Veron won't be under much pressure to pick out passes from deep.

I think Argentina have been convincing enough. They have no problems scoring goals, have defended reasonably well and the players all seem to be on the same wavelength. Just because Messi isn't scoring doesn't mean that Argentina are playing unconvincingly.

if argentina desperately need a goal in the end of the match, i think maradona will send on saint martin palermo to score the winning goal

he is old and slow but have an amazing talent to score insane goal and late winner

here he score a header from 40 m away

scoring a goal in 94 minute from the half way line

a backward header in the last minute of play

and the injury time goal that sent argentina to the world cup
