QUOTE(verx @ Jun 29 2010, 08:35 PM)
Messi isn't required to dribble pass 3-4 people everytime. Just his immediate 1 or 2 markers. The advantage is that if he gets through, the opposition has a serious problem to deal with with a flat backline being exposed.

The thing is, he didn't always have only 1-2 markers. Most of the time he was gang marked. So usually his impact is very limited. So I think it is wise if Messi being rested, and Aguero replaces him. That's a good alternative for me.

QUOTE
Maradona actually plays Veron depending on the opposition. Veron didn't start against South Korea but started against both Greece and Nigeria. Veron isn't able to cover as much ground given his age so when more running is needed in midfield Maxi comes in with a change in shape. I think the idea is to use Veron when the opposition sit off and defend deep. Argentina is guaranteed possession in those games and Veron won't be under much pressure to pick out passes from deep.

You are right about Veron's roles, but unfortunately he didn't perform it well enough. He showed too many strayed passes for a deep playmaker. Maybe you are right about the reason why Veron was left out in several games, but had he perform better than he did, I think he would not be leftt out at all.

QUOTE
I think Argentina have been convincing enough. They have no problems scoring goals, have defended reasonably well and the players all seem to be on the same wavelength. Just because Messi isn't scoring doesn't mean that Argentina are playing unconvincingly.
*
I'm not saying 'no goal from Messi = Argentina played badly'. Instead, I said 'more dependency on Messi = Argentina played badly'. I put the blame on Veron because his poor performances forced Maradona to be dependent more on a tired Messi than he should.

And for me, only Brazil (perhaps Germany too) is the only team that truly convincing enough. All other teams have their own problems. 'More goals = convincing performance' logic is not always true.

LOL, the alternative for Veron is actually play Maxi as a CM. And I wonder whether Cambiasso was watching or not. Nice job there Maradona.

Messi, come back home and get some rest!

the defense in disarray is not that shocking for this argentina team, but the attack today totally suck, they are glacially slow and allow so much time for germany to get back in defense. doh.gif

I think they build up their attacks well enough. Its just that the final ball or the finishing were really weak.

And yeah, the defense sucks big time. The reason? Easy. Maxi played as CM, leaving Masch the only 1 able to stop German counterattacks early. Moreover, their counterattacks are actually in numbers. How many time did we see Argentina's defence being outnumbered? Again, good job Maradona, job very well done doh.gif doh.gif

So sad to see good players such as Messi was being humiliated in this match.
The best players are not just good enough without good MANAGER.
Maybe Maradonna should have a class with Mourinho.
haha

maradona has lost his chance to be a manager that win WC as well as winning WC as a player after Franz Beckenbauer

please wake up from your delusion.
this maradona is never good enough to manage the national side.
heinze should pack his bag and leave with maradona.
because of his amateur squad selection and school boys tactic, the whole team was humiliated.
the most painful scenario is, these football noobs insulting messi for maradona's failure.

they never had a real right back in their squad.. doh.gif zanetti could've at least saved them the embarrasment of germany's trashing... all 2nd half goals came from the right.. like the earlier posts about veron and maxi playing to cover deep roles.. cambiaso does that pretty damn well imo.. not to mention gaby milito would be a better choice than demichelis??

even though it is maradona tactical mistake and not selecting the best defender that cause the exit from world cup, there is no one at the argentina FA that will fire him. beside that he is by far the more entertaining persona in this world cup. i think there is still 50/50 chance he will still head the team to the copa next year in argentina.

We beat Spain 4-1 in the friendly...GG

1st and 2nd goal absolutely class show by messi and higuain.....messi just calmly chipped the ball over reina while higuain, despite dragging the ball into a tight angle and still he manage to scored (mind you that pique already make a sliding tackle in order to prevent the ball from going in)

I really do think sergio batista can do well in the current argentina squad since almost all the player is from his olympic winning team.....he know how to works with them well.....

I expect much from Ever Banega for the future. He has the potential to be a very good playmaker for the team.

Surprise bump for my thread.....Too busy to maintain this thread anymore.....

5-3-2 formation is not working well.....aguero isolated....while messi need to drop too deep to collect the ball.....no creativity from midfield...

Things look better when Higuain & gago come in......messi with much freedom....

I hope to see Ricky Alvarez actually because he can provide creativity from midfield......
