Based on Raist's advice we went to Jaya33 and WOW they've got some awesome meat choices. By awesome I mean AACo Wagyu Cube Roll and Black Angus Rib Eye (yes seriously).
Anyway we did the rm8 aussie grass fed rib eye thing and it was delicious. ![]() Oh yeah baby. Blogpost here if you want more info on how to grill it yourself. It's damn easy once you got a couple of tries. |

I was talking to "an auntie" but I'm not sure if that's the "old auntie" (cos she wasn't that old ... 40-ish?). was asking her about prime rib availability but she says very hard to get over the counter cos there's almost no demand for it

QUOTE(raist86 @ Apr 7 2011, 08:02 AM) Grass fed steaks do taste awesome right? Hehe yeah, and rm8/100gm is cheap too! If I'm absolutely honest though I was UBER tempted to splurge on the AACo Wagyu ... or at least the black angus ... branded beef! But settled for the normal aussie one cos I haven't gotten the 'science' of grilling down comfortable enough to confidently grill rm100 pieces of meat, ha ha. |

QUOTE(etigge @ Nov 17 2011, 09:11 AM) Please guide me to the mamak as you mentioned which is as good as Ship, VC. I like to give it a try. To me these places, although not the best, it gives me another choice of dining. I definately will not pay that much to dine at Prime so if you can guide me to the mamak store, I will be most grateful as I can save even more. Suzy's corner, #9 "restaurant" (it's a mamak) in KL according to people who go to TA QUOTE(vexus @ Oct 29 2011, 05:22 PM) any good restaurant cook good spare ribs and pork ribs. SO hard to find good one. Tony Romas. But you gotta cross border go Singkapo one to get pork one. |

QUOTE(Cloud2322 @ Jan 3 2012, 04:03 AM) If choosing between prime and coliseum steakhouse which one is more preferable? I thought of trying one of them by end of the week! Coliseum steak has that "old school" steakhouse feel, but it is vastly inferior and also vastly cheaper. |

QUOTE(zhugeliang2012 @ Sep 5 2012, 02:33 PM) Walau, steakhouse only main for beef steak other than that still got other variety rite. I just want to bring my wife for western steakhouse to celebrate birthday and need some suggestion why got so unwanted replied around. We are asking because steakhouses specialize in (beef) steak, and their other varieties of non-beef dishes are typically "not as good." For example, Prime is one of the best steakhouses in KL. They only have a handful of non-beef mains on the menu, I tried their Chicken, which was (relatively) awful. If you want a good western style restaurant you should ask for suggestions for a western style restaurant, not suggestions for a steakhouse. |

QUOTE(johnnyjogger @ Sep 27 2012, 04:06 PM) I'm not here to bash Prime or sour their name or challenge any of the forumers' opinion but you'd be better off spending some time buying, seasoning and grilling your own steaks. I haven't been to Prime in something like 2 years so I can't comment on how good/bad they've been, but no need to exaggerate until like this to "prove your point." Unless you're sporting an actual grill inside your house then perhaps it may be a different story, but 95% of home kitchens will have to make do with pan-searing, which simply won't give you the same results as the specialty equipment that top-notch steakhouses use. |

QUOTE(etigge @ Nov 12 2012, 10:23 AM) Bar here means, are you experienced enough to really judge? Which steaks have you tried before? How does the people eat their steaks? It varies from place to place and country to country. I don't know if you're doing it intentionally or not, but your post reeks of elitism. "I am an ex chef therefore you must listen to me. None of you have eaten as many steaks as I have therefore your opinions are worthless." The last time I checked, this discussion isn't the offices of the Michelin guide, or the kitchens of a steakhouse, or some cooking school. It's a public forum where ordinary, non-chef people, come and give their opinions on food. Do all of us have to have eaten at Cut, Morton's, Ruth Chris, Lawry's and every other top-rated restaurant that serves steak before we can give opinions on whether Victoria Station is good? QUOTE(etigge @ Nov 12 2012, 10:23 AM) Food to me, the quality comes from the sincerity of the chef, how he perceives the food he is preparing. Sadly nowadays, most food are prepared by cooks or chefs not native to them. An executive chef from Prime can be there all the time to monitor the quality of the food that is churned out just like a Myanmarese frying kueh teow. He has never tried CKT in his whole life and now he is churning out 100 plates a day. Does it matter if he finds it nice or not or more appropriately does he actually knows what entails a good CKT??? I'm not sure this is a proper analogy. Theoretically a head/executive chef is supposed to have already trained/taught/guided/whatever his chefs to cook the food to his standards. So even if he's not always around to supervise his chefs, at least they have (theoretically) the education, knowledge and ability to cook the food with those same standards. Whether or not they slack when their boss isn't around is a separate matter entirely. As compared to a myanmar guy frying CKT on his own in a food court ...? I don't see what analogy you're trying to make. QUOTE(etigge @ Nov 12 2012, 10:23 AM) The days of good food is gone from our soil, digest it. I have tried steaks in Prime (someone asked me to try) and in actual the steaks in The Ship was very much better 20 years ago. Sadly The Ship or other good steak houses like Castell, Jakes Charbroil etc are now manned by cooks or chefs that are not passionate about their jobs. They take no pride in searing steaks, regardless if it is good or not, he still takes the same paycheck. Imagine they can even screw up franchised food like KFC which are all designed into SOPs with ready made ingredients. Notice how A & W has gone to the dogs? This part of your post I agree with. When growing up, I used to love a dinner out at Castell, Jake's, The Ship, etc. Or even the rib eye steak at Eden in Penang. Nowadays I don't step foot in any of these places anymore, I'll either splurge on a 'proper' steakhouse, or just pan-sear my own at home. QUOTE(etigge @ Nov 12 2012, 10:23 AM) IMO the best steaks, buy the best you can afford and then read up about cuts, aging, searing, marinating etc. Experiment! Once you get this to your taste, you can now learn the sauce. If you can come to this stage then you are really passionate about steaks. Try it. Whether the steak is roasted, charbroiled, pan seared, BBQ, the most important thing is the taste of the beef, the tenderness. It can be done at home with the most basic of kitchen equipments. I think most 'sin kah lan' here cannot distinguish between a charbroiler or a griddle even if you show him. Another hint at your elitism. "I am the ex chef here, I know what I'm talking about. You guys all talking c0ck and sin kah lan only because you can't cook as good as I can." In any case you of all people in this thread would know that there are limits to what the average home cook can do with average home kitchen equipment. Sourcing good meat in the first place can be a challenge. Aging in a home fridge is ineffective at best (and can even be downright dangerous). |

Guys, any recommendations for steakhouse that is good for 10 diners, with a budget of rm1-1.2k after all ++ (food and non alcoholic drinks)? The "usual suspect" steakhouses that I know of in KL all will be above that amount.

I had a CNY dinner in Jake's Starhill outlet and was extremely unimpressed. For the price we paid (rm900 for 8 adults 2 kids) the steaks were simply mediocre. Frankly speaking I get more satisfaction by buying meat from the shop and pan searing it at home.
Dunno is it because CNY time all the main chefs go on holiday or what. Or maybe it's just this outlet, cos I sort of remember 3 years back I go the damansara outlet the steaks were quite good |
