@edmin,thought you are not lepak in lyn already. Well,is the Windows 7 beta release stable to be used?If need a lot of RAM then i think is better for me to stick to WinXP.

@astria,i guess you can give a try on your both machines.

ray, i m always here, just don't see any chance for me 2 reply u guys..observer only. If u wanna know, I m still on XP and XP rocks with my rig. Just processed 1000+ raw photos these few days and took up 30-40GB of HDD space. It's amazing that my rig still survives today after all those 'abuse'. thumbup.gif Photoshop CS4 had GPU acceleration for NVIDIA cards, so I do gain some advantage there. flex.gif

I tried Win7 on another test rig, P4 with 1GB RAM. Runs fine, did not do extensive testings, lazy cause many other things to do. nod.gif

The main point is: HDD usage for netbook (some comes with only 8GB SSD, slow also) and even if it runs, does it gives you the performance that you expect? points to ponder.

@edmin,out of topic a bit. RAW files from SLR usually is 3-4MB per photo? That's quite big. Your shot up 1000+ photos from Christmas to New Year count down?

Christmas, overnight outing and a wedding shoots. RAW starts from 4mb above, depending on resolution (6mp, 8mp, 10mp, etc). Then do adjustments to RAW and save in desired format such as TIFF or JPG. laugh.gif

TIFF uncompressed for 6mp starts 30mb++ per photo, where as highest JPG quality is 4mb++. I m glad I have many HDDs so I can use a drive as pagefile, a scratch disk for Photoshop CS4, and another for photo savings. It does cut down disk access time a lot by running those HDDs parallel. icon_rolleyes.gif

Hi edmin, glad to hear that you are still happy with your rig for photo processing. Indeed i shall make use of my rig to process photos too.

u will need it connected to the network (via a switch or router)

set it a fixed IP

turn on remote desktop

use your current pc 2 remote your old p4 rig

this is of course, expecting that u have 1 monitor , 2 CPU's smile.gif

Added you in the list,s\welcome to the old school club. One of your mobo unstable? Describe more on it?
*
just simply very slow if compared to my other prescott rig..... doh.gif

and then the mobo got some port were broken down, keyboard and mouse port, some PCI slot and sound port. cry.gif

now the IDE drive detection in BIOS seems like very slow, but when i installed the hardware of my northwood machine into prescott and use the same IDE cable, the result are different.... blink.gif

still consider want to swap the northwood's mobo into the one which runs intel 945G and PCI-E with DDR2 ram when it totally down..... laugh.gif laugh.gif

Win 7 officially on my PM laptop

it's much better than Vista... response is much zippier...

only slight problem is the Intel PROset\Wireless 2200BG adapter driver... used XP one and now it works flawlessly...

programs install as per normal... Adobe reader, Live Messenger, Firefox, iTunes, Real Player...

if u ve been using Vista, u'll feel right at home...

btw, i love the new taskbar... biggrin.gif

very satisfied...

btw, IE8, WMP12 and DX11 are default installed...

I guess your mobo is causing you the slow response on it. Guess you need to get another mobo and try on it.

@edmin and astria, seeing both of you comment on new Windows 7 i feel confident that this new version would be pupolar later when release to market. thumbup.gif
