New specs, P4 2.8Ghz FSB533 (pity not HT proc|), P4P800-X, 1.5GB of ram (3*512mb, mixture of dual channelll & single channelll ) GF MX4000!

But that just for monitoring purpose.. Waiting for my new lappy arrived! Wander whats the spec yet.

I agree , these are long lasting processors. They are hot and not as fast as Core 2 Duos but they still do get their job done. Lets wait for Intel's Core i7 or something like that before making a jump. Once the new platform is stable and the prices of DDR3 are cheap , then we should leap !

It seems that  people here are changing rings like every second !  However as for me , after spending like ~RM1.6k on the processor itself , I would think twice before upgrading that fast. Rather skip the C2D Madness (as I got a Pentium E2180 for the HTPC) and replace my main rig with i7 (hopefully). So lets see how far it lasts

My Pentium D can do lots of things . rip dvds , playback 720p (1080p bit laggy but i can watch 1080p videos with the help of the GPU). Its just that its hot and it isnt that bad as people describe it. I do remember back in the 90s whereby processor "upgrade" cards cost you a fortune and these old CPUs do have a Turbo function (ain't it neat and these 486s are still being used today in airplanes and many other industries)

10yrs a go my home has a Pentium 133MHz...

with Turbo on, it runs at 180MHz, that's approx. 30% boost, and still with stock heatsink...

think of it as overclocking in today's terms...

i think the few frames lag of ur 720p viewing is cause by ur GC. i'm on p4 2.8e @stock pair with x1950pro didn't have frame lag issue. the only down side is when i'm on 720p viewing, i need to disable all unwanted program & processes to make 720p running smoother. if not, the cpu usage can easily go as high as 95%+ 

I bought when Pentium D was newly launched to the market. Think of it as people now getting Core i7 or Core 2 Duo when it was first launched. P4 can watch 720p movies fine without any lag as it uses the CPU. What I am talking is that use of GPU , Graphics card that has AVIVO HD or PureVideo 2 and above can be used to offload calculations to the GPU , hence the CPU can remain idle and you can do other task.

You need a good graphics card for it. At least the latest low-end graphics card would do the trick anyway
Yeah , its something like that. Think of it as automatic oc'ing. You enable it when you need the extra performance. Hit the turbo button (there is a button for it) and voila you get a bit of faster speed. Turn it off when you're not using it to run "demanding" applications. When I say demanding i meant games such as Quake back then , it was fun

It is P35-DS3R! Lol.. This mobo cames with on board RAID. Anyways, it still on Nicolasteoh hand and waiting for its return.

CoerAVC is the way to go

The codec plays a bigger role than the player

and another thing will be your GPU, get a better GPU and they will not be much of a lag or high CPU usage when playing HD h264 files. Due to GPU architecture + VRAM (higher the better, minimum 128MB at least for me)

Because I did comparison b4 3.4Ghz P4 with a 64MB GF4 MX440 and same CPU speed with 128MB 5900XT, CPU usage down by half

how to become P4 fans at here?

my both P4 rig are serving me for 4 and 5 and half years already......  

yet now i'm goto KL study and bought a Centrino 2 Platform laptop serving me....

Christmas, overnight outing and a wedding shoots. RAW starts from 4mb above, depending on resolution (6mp, 8mp, 10mp, etc). Then do adjustments to RAW and save in desired format such as TIFF or JPG. 

TIFF uncompressed for 6mp starts 30mb++ per photo, where as highest JPG quality is 4mb++. I m glad I have many HDDs so I can use a drive as pagefile, a scratch disk for Photoshop CS4, and another for photo savings. It does cut down disk access time a lot by running those HDDs parallel.
