yes, but that's only up till Intel 915 chipset...

from 925 onward, there's Flex Memory Technology in Intel mobo...

915P also can support flex memory technology form Intel, see here!

Pentium D user here *guess we share the same thing*

I agree , these are long lasting processors. They are hot and not as fast as Core 2 Duos but they still do get their job done. Lets wait for Intel's Core i7 or something like that before making a jump. Once the new platform is stable and the prices of DDR3 are cheap , then we should leap !

Long live Pentium 4 and D
*
Lol,same moto ya....I thought nobody is using Pentium D already in this forum.

It seems that  people here are changing rings like every second !  However as for me , after spending like ~RM1.6k on the processor itself , I would think twice before upgrading that fast. Rather skip the C2D Madness (as I got a Pentium E2180 for the HTPC) and replace my main rig with i7 (hopefully). So lets see how far it lasts

My Pentium D can do lots of things . rip dvds , playback 720p (1080p bit laggy but i can watch 1080p videos with the help of the GPU). Its just that its hot and it isnt that bad as people describe it. I do remember back in the 90s whereby processor "upgrade" cards cost you a fortune and these old CPUs do have a Turbo function (ain't it neat and these 486s are still being used today in airplanes and many other industries)
*
Whoa, you spent RM1.6k to buy the processor alone last time? rclxub.gif Your Pentium D seems like not bad still can watch 1080p format movies with minimal lag. P4 is only able to watch 720p format movies with a few frames lag in the whole movie. thumbup.gif Seems like brother side by side ya.Unfortunately our gpu can't help us to play hd movies. I solute those people who is able to upgrade frequently when new tech is out.

Can you mention more on the CPUs Turbo function? I would like to know more with the function. During 90's i was still no chance to touch with computers.

reminds me...

10yrs a go my home has a Pentium 133MHz...

with Turbo on, it runs at 180MHz, that's approx. 30% boost, and still with stock heatsink...

think of it as overclocking in today's terms...
*
Last time's CPU also can "overclock" just with the function of Turbo on?

i think the few frames lag of ur 720p viewing is cause by ur GC. i'm on p4 2.8e @stock pair with x1950pro didn't have frame lag issue. the only down side is when i'm on 720p viewing, i need to disable all unwanted program & processes to make 720p running smoother. if not, the cpu usage can easily go as high as 95%+  sweat.gif
*
Not sure with the GC although, sees like good gpu is helping in HD movies. My CPU also easily use up to 95% of the resources during the complex scenes. biggrin.gif

I bought when Pentium D was newly launched to the market. Think of it as people now getting Core i7 or Core 2 Duo when it was first launched. P4 can watch 720p movies fine without any lag as it uses the CPU. What I am talking is that use of GPU , Graphics card that has AVIVO HD or PureVideo 2 and above can be used to offload calculations to the GPU , hence the CPU can remain idle and you can do other task.

You need a good graphics card for it. At least the latest low-end graphics card would do the trick anyway
Yeah , its something like that. Think of it as automatic oc'ing. You enable it when you need the extra performance. Hit the turbo button (there is a button for it) and voila you get a bit of faster speed. Turn it off when you're not using it to run "demanding" applications. When I say demanding i meant games such as Quake back then , it was fun
*
Thanks for sharing the Turbo mode feature. Guess to play HD movies smoothly,GPU is playing an important role here. Low end like 8600GT is able to do the job easily i guess.

It is P35-DS3R! Lol.. This mobo cames with on board RAID. Anyways, it still on Nicolasteoh hand and waiting for its return.
*
Seems like > 2 months already your mobo went for RMA. What fails you on the mobo?

CoerAVC is the way to go

The codec plays a bigger role than the player

and another thing will be your GPU, get a better GPU and they will not be much of a lag or high CPU usage when playing HD h264 files. Due to GPU architecture + VRAM (higher the better, minimum 128MB at least for me)

Because I did comparison b4 3.4Ghz P4 with a 64MB GF4 MX440 and same CPU speed with 128MB 5900XT, CPU usage down by half
*
Seems like Core AVC is the best choice among codecs. I might try out and see cause i'm using klite codec.

@edmin,thought you are not lepak in lyn already. Well,is the Windows 7 beta release stable to be used?If need a lot of RAM then i think is better for me to stick to WinXP.

@astria,i guess you can give a try on your both machines.

@edmin,out of topic a bit. RAW files from SLR usually is 3-4MB per photo? That's quite big. Your shot up 1000+ photos from Christmas to New Year count down?

Christmas, overnight outing and a wedding shoots. RAW starts from 4mb above, depending on resolution (6mp, 8mp, 10mp, etc). Then do adjustments to RAW and save in desired format such as TIFF or JPG.  laugh.gif

TIFF uncompressed for 6mp starts 30mb++ per photo, where as highest JPG quality is 4mb++. I m glad I have many HDDs so I can use a drive as pagefile, a scratch disk for Photoshop CS4, and another for photo savings. It does cut down disk access time a lot by running those HDDs parallel.  icon_rolleyes.gif

Hi edmin, glad to hear that you are still happy with your rig for photo processing. Indeed i shall make use of my rig to process photos too.
