hi guys, as the title suggests. this thread is predominantly catered to those of you who use or intend to use the apps from the iTunes store. Therefore, please do not include anything gathered from Cydia or Installer.

in order to be as systematic as possible, kindly use the template in the first post as a guide when giving your comments. pictures of the app functionality are also definitely most welcomed.

i will start this thread off with a comment using the provided template about my review of a downloaded app of mine as an example.
while comments are most welcomed, do try to keep them as constructive as possible

i acknowledge that these facts and figures are easily obtainable from the iTunes review section, but i have been misled numerous times into purchasing them and find them highly inaccurate. therefore, the next time, if i saw a fellow LYN user who had downloaded an app which i am contemplating to get, i will be sure to PM him/her first for further information before purchasing the app.

thanks a lot for reading my post!

Name of App: DianHua Dictionary

Price: FREE

Compatibility to iPhone/iPod Touch: Both

Your own personal description of this App: A Chinese-English (and vice versa) dictionary.

Pros:
1. it is free
2. simple interface
3. provides pinyin translation as well
4. provides both simplified and traditional characters
5. works both direction; chinese-english and english-chinese.

Cons:
1. some of the searches can take ages
2. i know that i'm no chinese expert, but shouldn't the traditional and simplified characters be the other way round? (as shown in the last picture below)

Personal User Rating: 6 /10

Conclusion: i would definitely recommend this app. hopefully the search will be faster in the next update.

Name of App: Photobucket

Price: FREE

Compatibility to iPhone/iPod Touch: iPhone

Your own personal description of this App: Upload pictures into your photobucket account directly!

Pros:
1. upload your pictures to obtain the IMG, HTML codes without the need of emailing/using the USB cable and then re-upload again.
2. they used to charge, but it is free now

Cons:
1. the third (or last) feature to view your pictures online isn't very helpful as it causes the iphone to freeze. requires holding both power and home buttons for re-initiate.
2. the wheel of circle might sometimes indicates that the picture is still being uploaded, but the fact is , it may be already on their server. hence, if you might end up finding two identical pictures if you try again
3. failure rates are pretty high (see attached picture below)

Personal User Rating: 4/10

Conclusion: Unless the bugs are fixed quickly, i don't think they will be very popular.

Name of App: Koi Pond

Price: USD$0.99

Compatibility to iPhone/iPod Touch: Both

Your own personal description of this App: My first ever purchase-able app; serves pure novelty purpose.

Pros:
1. cheap (initially...)
2. extremely responsive
3. has never lagged or hung on me before
4. improves the zen around you??? calms you down? or whatever that floats your boat!
5. customisable (see attached picture)

Cons:
1. come on? 99cents for something which is not useful? no naked chicks?
2. might be fun for the first few days, but my interest on it wore out gradually

Personal User Rating: 5/10

Conclusion: Decent and flawless app but pure total waste of money. Honestly! ohmy.gif ohmy.gif ohmy.gif

Name of App: Built-in Maps

Price: Pre-included

Compatibility to iPhone/iPod Touch: Both

Your own personal description of this App: Useful in a way (in finding a general area), but useless in a way (you cannot find specific road names)

Pros:
1. ability to enter precise GPS coordinates (the main point which i'm gonna highlight below)
2. a hybrid of satellite and schematic drawings (can be viewed individually or both)
3. Global Positioning System (GPS) and position drawing from nearby cell tower or wifi provider service centre for iphone 3g and just position drawing for iphone 2g and ipod touch.
4. the best way to impress a non-iphone believer.

Cons:
1. since iphone has not been launched officially in malaysia, the ability to search for a specific road locally is not feasible. however, its precision in a nearby neighbour, singapore is remarkably impressive.
2. the ability to view the driving/walking directions from a first-person-view; maps only provide users with an eagle eye view.
3. extremely power consuming with the GPS turned on working hand by hand with 3G/edge to load the maps.

Personal User Rating: 6/10

Conclusion: we can only be wishful that google will extend their services to malaysia. other than that, i like this app.

HOW TO ENTER A GIVEN GPS COORDINATE TO POINT OUT ITS DESIRED LOCATION (THIS HAS ONLY BEEN TESTED ON AN IPHONE 3G)

1. let me quote an example from a friend who needed to attend a civic TT session this friday but he has no idea of the location (despite being well versed with the KL area)
user posted image
a print shot of the forum, revealing a set of coordinate

2. it says <3º 6' 21", 101º 43' 56"> and enter them with a space in between each number in the search box (ignoring all the symbols) i.e. 3 6 21 101 43 56 like this:
user posted image

3. give the app a couple of secs to work its magic and a precise position is revealed.
user posted image

4. compare it with the given map from the forum.
user posted image

5. now with my friend roughly knowing the exact location of the TT venue, he can decide on the best road/highway to embark on.

thank you for reading my laborious post! laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

Name of App: WinRemote

Price: USD$1.99

Compatibility to iPhone/iPod Touch: Both

Your own personal description of this App: Turn your device into a remote by just entering your IP address!

Pros:
1. eliminates the need of having a wireless mouse and keyboard (and also those so-called dodgy infrared hoax etc)
2. doesn't require any messy setting up or installation. you can simply activate it without the need of going to the PC
3. contains both mouse and keyboard
4. the speed of the mouse cursor can be adjusted

Cons:
1. highly dependent on wifi router strength
2. the movement might be impended if the traffic is heavy (for example, if you are downloading a heavy load)
3. unless you have bionic eyes, you might have troubles looking for the mouse cursor and seeing what you have just typed on the monitor.
4. the genuine apple's remote app works slightly better than this (but of course that only works for itunes)
5. only for windows users. macs can opt this out (though there are other apps available catered to both mac and windows. however i purchased this because it has the highest review ratings at the time of acquisition)

Personal User Rating: 8.5/10

Conclusion: i would definitely recommend this app if you love watching movies from the bed (like i do)

6. keeps an entire conversation history
7. informs you of online users, including those are idle.
8. neat, simple and organised

Cons:

Pros:
1. free
2. tricky
3. professionally done
4. comes with a description of the picture
5. very responsive

Name of App: Fake Calls

Price: USD0.99

Compatibility to iPhone/iPod Touch: Both (but why would one need this app for an iPod touch???!!!)

Your own personal description of this App: Fake your way to a better excuse?

Pros:
1. self explanatory
2. it was free when i got it

Cons:
1. no ring tone selections
2. boring interface
3. expensive for a redundant app; there are better ones out in the app store
4. no picture/avatar selections
5. only available as "unknown"
6. can get pretty unresponsive as times

Personal User Rating: 1/10 (only because i got it free)

Conclusion: unless you do find extreme difficulties to excuse yourself from a tight situation, this app is a complete waste of time synchronisation/space (you know the drill)

Name of App: Ace Tennis Online

Price: USD0.99

Compatibility to iPhone/iPod Touch: Both

Your own personal description of this App: Tennis game which allows you to chat/play online with players all over the world

Pros:
1. play with players all over the world (and there is an option to select your desired country origin players)
2. and at the same time chat as well (haven for meeting girls online? blink.gif blink.gif blink.gif )
3. entertaining
4. maximises your accelerometer by curling the ball left/right, long/short ball et cetera
5. cheap

Cons:
1. running for the ball can be sometimes be interrupted by confusing between hitting the ball and running
2. doesn't look very 3D to me, despite being claimed that way
3. names of the computer player names are clearly a rip off from the famous players
4. multiplayer with other users can be laggy (hence playing over the telecommunication network provider is not recommended)

Personal User Rating: 8/10

Conclusion: this should be able to keep one entertained without regretting the purchase
