Hey guys,
I am having problems restoring my 2G 1.1.4 phone to the 2.1 firmware. From iTunes I selected the iPhone1,2_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw file to restore, and it gave me the error number 5. I even tried to put it in restore mode prior to restoring it and it produced the same error. Have any of you encountered this problem before?

Have any of you encountered this problem before? the firmware u downloaded (and posted on the 1st page) is for iPhone 3G....find the one for iPhone 2G iPhone1,1_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw and u should not follow this guide , as it is for iPhone 3G ONLY (misleading title from the TS) follow the guide on iClarified (since thread starter also copy from there 100%) here for iPhone 2G unlock and jailbreakThis post has been edited by psyeo: Oct 12 2008, 11:12 AM

All phones are not jail broken out of the box. Once you purchase, you'll have to manually Jail Break it.

is there an option not to jailbreak it? i mean, jailbreaking enables u to download free apps from everywhere.. does that mean non-jailbroken phones cant download free apps? or just limited free apps?

there is tons of free apps available through iTunes without needing to jailbreak. with jailbreak u can install quite a number of other apps that are not available and approved by apple.
since u're new, take my advice, don't jailbreak it till u are familiar with the phone after using it.

First thing I did was to jailbreak the phone because correct me if I'm wrong but without jailbreak, you can't solve the basic issues like the caller id prefix.
That is just one thing of course but to me it is quite major since I went and bought such an expensive phone but I have to double entry all the people in my phone book so that I can properly identify who sms/calls me. If you can live with doing that then I suppose psyeo is right. You don't have to jailbreak until you're more familiar with the phone.

what's with the caller id issue, wilsoncvt? u mean when there's an incoming call, it displays the number instead of the name? is jailbreaking actually safe to the phone? i can simply use the steps given on the 1st page here right?
