QUOTE(Syegg @ Sep 28 2008, 03:23 PM) Hi all, reached Sheffield two week ago, taking MSc Control system at Sheffield Uni. Just manage to online as my accommodation didnt provide internet connection. I'm going to sign up mobile phone package next week, just wondering which network operator is cheaper? I saw a lot of mobile network which offer lucrative package, such as free PS3, Wii, Tv..hard to conclude a deal anyway, Pls advice. Thanks. probably will sign up pay monthly 20GBP-30GBP. By the way, is it buying online is cheaper than walk into the retail shop?a lot of deals cant find in the retail shop. welcome to UK's student life... Life here surprisingly bored as i am not really fancy of bar..... How do you guys get used of their ascent? sometime i really dono what they r talking about. ascent? don't worry... after few months, you will get used to it and you will speak with the ascent too.. if you can't understand what they are saying, you can always (nicely) ask them to repeat.. lol.. this is what i did last time.. anyway north part of uk's ascent always is the most difficult to understand. Sometimes those local ppl from south part of uk don't undestand ppl from north part of UK's ascent too.. so don't worry about it.. |

QUOTE(youngkies @ Sep 30 2008, 06:34 AM) NUS card is given by the uni, apply rail card if only if you think you are going to use the rail much/travel a lot. There's 2 type of NUS card, normal NUS card is free (given by uni) another type of NUS card is called NUS extra. NUS extra card cost £7 (if i'm not mistaken)....and insurance? not bother to buy one. Insurance? yes, you need one.. but just a student insurance. you can get it from barclays,Student Possessions Insurance. it's cheap anyway, few quids depends on your choice... I would say protect your stuff before someone broke into your room and take all your stuff epecially your laptop.. hehehe... but personally mobile phone insurance is useless... don't bother to take it... |

QUOTE(Arturia @ Oct 1 2008, 09:52 AM) okay. noted. just a question, the compulsory insurance... i get it there or here? i wont be having a car there or a house (i'll go and rent a room from someone so i dont need a housing insurance right?) but how bout health care? the NHS only covers the consultation fees and not the medicine. (medicine is the expensive one). is there a health insurance that can cover both? (also without paying an arm and a leg) also what compulsory insurance do i need to get there? if you renting a room, then you can get the student's insurance( if you are a student)... i am a little nervous now. going to the UK tmrw night. health care, hmm... it's depends on you.. you can always get HC2 card (the form can get easily from boots), with this card you don't have to pay anything for medication. |

QUOTE(youngkies @ Oct 1 2008, 07:25 PM) that is why investing in an expensive umbrella (gbp10-20) is well valued. lol.. nope, i bought a £10++ from boots, but it's still went into dustbin after 1 or 2 weeks.. hahah... and the massive sales day would be the boxing day, 26th of december. before that, there will be on-off sales in most shops. yes, true 26th dec is the massive sales day.. but in Jan most of shop will have further discount... |

yeah, primark is target commercial level. so quality will be low... but if you just want to wear for short term, then it's a good option...
probably TK-Max is another good shop if you like to get cheap branded cloth... |

QUOTE(Raining @ Oct 11 2008, 09:17 AM) thanks all for the info, in this case, I think I just try the computer in the library/ labs for 1 month. If really not convenient then I will get myself a printer on Christmas yes, when you buy printer.. they are not including USB cable.. you need to get it separate.. £8? no, you can just get a cheap from the internet, it just cost £1-3... i don't think you need to get branded USB cable.. yalor, coz the computer in the library is sux. Spend me few mins just for loading dunno why their call time + SMS here is so exp my classmate really pro, he can find jobs in UK + apply to migrate to canada and australia at the same time well, what you can do when you are going back to malaysia, you can sell it to your junior or those who just enroll.. probably you only able to sell it 40% or 50%.. lol.. it's better than you carry back malaysia.. actually pay as you go is cheaper if you seldom make calls.. monthly contract is bit troublesome coz you need to stick with them for 1 year or 18 months. but the advantage is you get a free phone. it's not easy to get a job.. you are encourage to start hunt for job before you are graduate... remember, those graduate job is starting to recruit around beginning of the year, such jan-march.. so if anyone is going to graduate next year jun/august, now is the good time to apply graduate job. |

QUOTE(Arturia @ Oct 26 2008, 04:20 PM) I am sure this had been answered before (but due to the long number of post and my short amount of time nowadays) I might just as well ask here. I not sure for others. for my experience, it's free.. which from my step account (natwest) to halifax's current account.. there's not charges on my transfer... but you can always double check with the stuff in the bank...How much does it cost for interbank transfers? (eg. from Natwest ----> lloyds or vice versa) Some told me its free some told me I have to pay GBP30 and some don't know at all. btw, for younkies said phone bills - £30 monthly but cashback for £360 after 12 months = absolutely free. there's no longer any these kind of deals.. now all of the deals are 18 months and caskback probably 10 months or 16 months... |

QUOTE(azarimy @ Nov 5 2008, 05:20 PM) it's tougher when u're not ready for it. agree... the good news is: Rakyat Malaysia kekal nikmati 6 bulan perjalanan tanpa visa di Britain nowadays, it's pretty hard to find job in UK.. i'm bit freak out, as i suppose i graduate at the wrong time.. graduated for 2 months, still haven't have the chances for interview when applying for a permanent job... True, working permit is a big issue for us, i'm still wondering should i change my student visa to Tier 1 Post Study Work visa now or wait till my student visa expired.. or just bungkus balik malaysia oh, it's a really good news.. at least when our family come over visit, they don't need to spend money for visa.. less trouble.. I suppose the home office haven't implement the rule that tourist need to pay £1000 deposit when entering UK? This post has been edited by liew_jls: Nov 7 2008, 06:45 AM |

QUOTE(youngkies @ Nov 7 2008, 12:29 AM) yes generally speaking you can job hunt whenever you like. i did job hunt even before started my final year, and got a job way before start of second sem of final year. Thanks for the advice.. i guess i should wait till i get my certificate before start my application and go back malaysia for my application. it's another few weeks and i'll get my certificate anyway..but when you have got a job, it is best to start the job only when you get the eligibility to work full time or at least your application for the right leave to remain has been submitted. the best is to have every important documents in hand before submitting application, in case when the border agency wanted to see the certificates when you havent graduated yet, you will be left in hassle. the least document you must have, if you havent got the cert yet is a full transcript. *speaking from own and other experiences* by the way, according to the home office, for those application (Tier 1 Post Study Work) outside UK, it's require £2500 in my bank account. but it didn't specific the money need to be in UK bank account or malaysia bank account.. I guess if i can use my malaysia bank account which has equivalent this amount, it should be able alright? I tried email home office and try to get a clarification from them.. but there's no reply from them... any idea? |

QUOTE(Raining @ Nov 7 2008, 05:17 PM) nope.. i'm converting my student visa to Tier 1 Post Study Work visa. This visa is for those who graduate in UK university. if you apply in UK, you need to pay £400 with £800 funding in you bank account while you do it outside UK (malaysia) you only need to pay £215 (forgot how much is that should be around £200++) with £2500 funding in your bank account... With this visa you are allow to work any permanent job in UK for 2 years. |
