But please note. It takes into account how much money you can earn working part time and use that to offset your cost of living. So if you are not going to work part time, DO NOT use this report.

Guys,

I currently have some pounds in my account at OCBC, no problem withdrawing it what so ever when i needed some for application fee in pound.

However, i went to Maybank yesterday and they told me i need an introducer in order to have a foreign currency account.

Talked to one of my friend last night and he was told by a bank officer that it's better to have the pounds in an international bank (ex OCBC) cos they have branches over at UK.

So does this matter?

Oh and How do you guys move your money to UK?

I heard that they charge quite abit with Bank Draft and TT is more recommended as BD will take 1 month to clear. My friend also told me that i should have open my account at OCBC with my dad as a joint account so that my dad will be able to TT money to UK for me when i'm not in Malaysia?

Kinda confused with how TT works rclxub.gif

Or are there any other ways u guys are using?

3 optiona you can consider.

1. RHB has some sort of link up with UK's Barclay bank. I think RHB can help you open an UK Barclay account but there are monthly fee with this account.
http://www.rhbbank.com.my/personal/treasur...tu_fam_pac.shtm

2. HSBC.
They are world's 2nd largest bank headquartered in UK. Go ask about their Premier Account benefit. They can also help you open an UK account. This account has monthly charge but can be waived. Ask for details from the bank.

3. Malaysian ATM card (must have the Cirrus or PLUS logo)
Best is get an HSBC ATM card. Someone in Malaysia can deposit money into your Malaysian account and you can withdraw that money instantly in UK via UK ATM machine but there will be charges ranging from RM5 to 12. This is at best a temporary and emergency option because you do not have an UK account, so there are limitation in things you can do, eg. UK credit card, debit card, direct debit, UK checks etc.

4th option.

Apply for a basic account in UK, use a bankdraft, takes 2 weeks for opening an account + deposit of the bankdraft. Bring enough cash for 1 month living fee and other relevant requirement e.g. room deposit etc.

Subsequent transfer can be easily done via TT. simple easy and fast with little fee only.
*
But with this option, you must physically be in UK before you can open the account. On the other hand, with RHB/Barclays and HSBC Premier options, the UK account can be open BEFORE you landed in UK.

As for subsequent money transfer. TT may not be the best option. With TT, money takes about 2 or 3 working days to reach UK. The cost involved is about RM20 to RM50. But HSBC premier customer may be able to transfer for free.

With bank draft, you have to send it by registered post (DO NOT send by courier which cost a bomb and only faster by 2/3 days) to UK and it takes about 7 days. If the bank draft is drawn with a UK bank, it will take about 2 days to clear. Total is 9 days and it cost about RM8 total.

If you are really in an emergency, the fastest way to transfer money would be to deposit cash money into your Malaysian bank account and you can withdraw that money instantly from any UK ATM machine.

From hearsay, Is it true that if someone wants to study in uk , one need to have X amount of money saved in his/hers bank account ???

Just to verify this issue .....

Assuming your entire course in UK + living expenses comes to GBP100K. When you apply for student visa, they would want proof that you or your sponsor has that much money in combination of cash, fixed deposit, salary income etc. Things to proof that you can afford that GBP100K over that period in UK.

are you sure there's not information for paying the fee for student visa? scroll down the page where you are looking at the table for each visa fees. there's few ways to do that, you can either pay it via online banking, bank transfer and get the bank draft (this need to pay RM5, others should hv any surcharge).

make sure your fixed deposit is updated, coz usually FD is using automatically update. but when you are using it for financial proving, you must go to the bank and update ur FD before submission. otherwise they will reject your application. or if you have monthly bank statement for your FD, you can use it.

i tot this new requirement (living expenses proving) only will start in next 2 weeks? so if anyone is coming in next 2 months, this 2 weeks is the best time to apply your student visa.
*
On FD certificate. Make sure you can prove that these fixed deposit has been there for the past few months so bring your back copies as well as proof.

Otherwise, they may think you borrowed the money from other people, make it into FD to make it as proof to apply for visa. Once visa approved, you will immediately withdraw the money from FD to return other people.

Does it mean as long as I have FD for some time , I can use it for visa application ? ... do I need to update it as liew said ?
*
Yes. You need to convince them that you has this FD for a few months already (ideally 6 months) and by renewing/updating it as mentioned by Liew, you are proving you still have it.

1. uni of nottingham
2. uni of sheffield
3. uni of manchester
all AAB offer.. a little confused to what to chose

On medicine reputation, I think Nottingham and Manchester are better than Sheffield.

But Nottingham and Manchester has very different type of teaching so you should base your decision as to which you prefer. Nottingham is still more traditional based whereas Manchester is into Problem Based Learning in a big way.

Beside that, Nottingham give you an extra degree in medical science within the same 5 years course so if you like to learn as much as you can in medicine, this can be very attractive but it will also mean a lot more work.

On living cost. I read that Manchester is cheaper. And Manchester is in the city whereas Nottingham is campus based. Another 2 thing to consider.

BTW, I am curious as to which of the 4 university you applied for rejected you? Oxbridge?

Is it because Nottingham close to London that its cost of living is higher than Manchester ? ...

Care to elaborate more about the Problem Based learning ?  I heard in Manchester. Student support such as notes etc is literally none. Everything you have to find it yourselves and be independent. Scary @@. But in a good way.

what else universities should I apply for Electrical and Electronic engineering  ?  I have applied
1) manchester
2) sheffield > gotten offer
3) birmingham
4) bristol > gotten offer
5) southampton
*
According to Royal Bank of Scotland, Leeds is one of the cheapest and Nottingham is very expensive. But do note this report looks at Net Cost (i.e., taking into tuition fee, cost of living and working part time to offset the cost.). If you do not work part time, then this report is meaningless.

While those near London can be expensive, it does not mean other cities near London automatically are. You should ask those now in UK for answers to that question.

Yes, I do read that PBL means a lot will depends on the student. But if your group have some lazy bone etc, you may be in trouble so that may not be good.

Personally I think, may be more boring, the traditional method may be better. For the first 2 years, you get bombarded by science so you ended up with very solid foundation on theory. And later in the Clinical year, you learn to solve problem also. So in theory, PBL is everywhere, just a matter of when. May be some medical student can explain it better.

There are 2 type of reputation you should consider. Overall reputation and reputation to a particular course.

On overall reputation, of your 2 offered place, Bristol may be better than Sheffield.

no, nottingham isn't expensive as you think. of coz living in city centre will be a little bit expensive if compare with place like beeston (where Nott Uni is). What i know is nottingham rent will be around £300 per month (including all bills) which you will have a very comfortable room... If you are going to study in Nott Uni, the living cost definitely will be cheaper..  Besides, Manchester and Leeds are big city, you can't compare manchester and leeds with nottingham..
I have no idea how much it cost in the various cities. I am merely reporting what Bank of Scotland said in this document:
http://www.rbs.co.uk/content/personal/curr...iving_Index.pdf

But if you are not doing part time work, you should ignore this report because it becomes meaningless.

"The RBS Student Living Index was calculated as follows: for each university town, average local weekly student
expenditure on living and accommodation costs (comprising alcohol, books and course materials, cigarettes, going out,
buying clothes, laundry, transport costs, utility bills, telephone bills, eating out, buying CDs, DVDs and videos, photocopying and library costs, supermarket food shopping and rent) was divided by average local weekly income for working students. This provided a relative differential value, by which the 27 university towns were ranked."

the brits are very particular about these things.

u wanna know what's next? they're making us pay for airport services when we arrive to the UK. coz they say why should their tax-payers money be used to layan people coming to their country? ofcourse, this have been met with strong oppositions, but u cant deny the merit of that proposal.
*
Stupid logic. I would like to see them charge tourist coming into UK using their airport. It is the same as opening a restaurant and start charging the patron the use of chair and table.

it doesnt sound stupid when 40% of ur income goes into taxes.
*
When a significant amount of your income comes from tourist and student utilizing their education industry, do you want to kill off that source of income? In other word, do you want to kill off your goose that lay the golden egg? That is why I say that is a stupid logic.

In Malaysia, we too have such stupid mentality. I remember there was this association head complaining of too many Singaporean coming into Johore to spend their money. And in the process, making everything too expensive for Johorean. They did not realize these very Singaporean are bring money into Malaysia. Imagine, refusing people who bring money into this country.

MSL automatically give you 30-kg luggage allowance if you have the required student card. And mind you, excess luggage always cost >RM100 per kg for long distance flight.

Somehow this year, Etihad is expensive. Emirate is much cheaper at around GBP450 - 500 for return London-KL.
