Winpwn 2.0.0.4 is a software to help you upgrade your firmware to 2.0.1 including jailbreaking and unlocking your phone.
Just follow the guide closely and find more reference before you attempt upgrading. Just becareful of the DFU part. It may look simple but it can be pretty tricky. Do make sure you know and study the steps given just for safety sake. *(Just my opinion) i recommend that you stay with your current fw 1.1.4 and wait out for winpwn 2.5. My advice, stay at 1.1.4 is the best option now, since Apple is releasing new FW next month. Be patience and wait. Not much advantage upgrading to 2.0.x if you dont need push email and exchange mail support. BTW, the WIFI reception on 2.0.x is pretty bad as compared to 1.1.4

Where did u get the facts that "WIFI reception on 2.0.X is pretty bad as compared to 1.1.4"? I don't see any degradation in the WIFI signal going from 1.1.4 to 2.0.X. Maybe you can point us to the source of your claim? FW2.0.X is not only for push email and echange support. There are other features included in the FW such as AppSupport which is the most obvious one. @allisonwoo It's up to you to upgrade to which firmware. Each firmware got its own pros n cons. FW1.1.4 still have lots of apps thats usefull but now most of the dev are abandoning 1.1.4 apps to port to Cydia 2/Installer 4 for FW2.0.X. FW2.0.X don't have the MMS, SMS Fowarding, etc apps from Installer/Cydia but they will be slowly ported later. FW2.0.X also include apple own installer called AppStore where u can install/download free and paid apps. It's true that another firmware upgrade is just around the corner but in the end it you that's gonna make the decission. |

QUOTE(frozzbyte @ Aug 28 2008, 08:37 PM) @gpsp I am currently on 2.0.2, upgraded from 1.1.x to 2.0 to 2.0.1. It happened on all 2 of my iphone 8GB/16GB (one specially for work/call only, and one for personal) , check out hackint0sh and there are others with similar issues. Where did u get the facts that "WIFI reception on 2.0.X is pretty bad as compared to 1.1.4"? I don't see any degradation in the WIFI signal going from 1.1.4 to 2.0.X. It's true that another firmware upgrade is just around the corner but in the end it you that's gonna make the decission. This is one of them http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread...&highlight=wifi There is nothing wrong with upgrading to FW2.0.x, what I have said is there will be a new FW upgrade in Sept, that I adviced allisonwoo to wait for the new version. It all depends on what kind of iphone users he/she is, there are many users that used the iphone mainly for call and email, and there are those who like to experience with new features e.g. Appstore. So I am assuming that allison is a new user for iPhone and advice him/her to stay at 1.1.4, and believe it or not, it is currently the most stable firmware version at the moment. What method did u use to unlock the phone when it was 1.1.X last time? Added on August 29, 2008, 2:51 amAnd did u restore the phone from itunes backup after each restore or set as new phone? From what i've read in the forum that you gave, it's not the fw2.0.X thats causing the havoc with wifi, its something else. If its the fw then there would be tons of complaints here. Right now most of the people that i see, talk, chat or pm does not have any problem with their wifi except for you. Maybe its a different case with your phone. Hope its nothing serious or hardware malfunction. This post has been edited by frozzbyte: Aug 29 2008, 02:51 AM |

Wouldnt it be prudent for the TS to upgrade to Firmware 2.0.X since she is experiencing problems with the iPhone and its prompting of the need to be repaired? It is easy for anyone to say to "hold off upgrading because there is a new firmware around the corner", but you dont get her point. She is pretty much in dire straits now since her iPhone is popping up messages to ask itself to be repaired.........and Firmware 2.0.x may do just that. Why ask her to wait even longer while the iPhone is already breathing out of the tubes in ICU?

Having the error (repair needed) doesnt mean you need to upgrade the FW2.0.x. I have experience the error before on 1.1.4 (once), and at that time FW2.0 is not even out yet, so restore is the only option and that solve my problem. So why do you think fw2.0 will solve his/her problem? The easiest option from me to him/her is to restore the phone back to his/her current firmware(1.1.4) and jailbreak/unlock with iPlus2.0. PWN, WinPWN and other options might be too difficult/tedious for him/her if he/she is a new iPhone user who use the phone mainly to make/receive call/sms, email and internet brownsing. Well, it is also easy for others just ask to upgrade to new FW whenever there is problem with current FW, but in iPhone case, it is due to the fact that Apple is adding more features for the coorporate users (where the money is coming from), e.g exchange mail and push mail, as for Appstore, it is a platform for official 3rd party developers to build software/game apps for the iphone (again the profit). So if you are using this mainly for call/sms, why the rush to fw2.0.x? Sorry if my statement offense any senior LYN members, but FW2.0.x does give me some problems and some of us do think 1.1.4 is more stable.
Cheers. This post has been edited by gpsp: Aug 29 2008, 08:06 PM |

We all have our "reasons" but it's up to Allisonwoo to decide. If she wants to stay at fw 1.1.4 or upgrade to fw 2.0.1, so be it. Allisonwoo, the ball is at your court. Whichever firmware you decide to go with, we're all happy go lucky. Cheers This post has been edited by davidgary73: Aug 29 2008, 08:15 PM |

Frozzbyte, I was on winpwn 1.1.4. I ahve done all the "set as new phone", just upgraded to FW2.0.2, hoping it will improve, but too bad it is still the same. My reason is being from the same place in my house, where it used to be receiving WIFI signal, I am losing or having really weak signal and quite often drop to using EDGE instead.
Anyway, it looks like I am hijacking the thread now by talking about my problem with FW2.0.x instead of allisonwoo. Hope he/she has solved her problem. This post has been edited by gpsp: Aug 29 2008, 08:24 PM |

I see her usage as someone who Is light and casual user. Even equipped with the free apps from Firmware 2.0, she'd be overwhelming herself. But to each his/her own, we've all extolled the virtue of our preferred firmware. It's up to her to decide.
Personally, I don't see a reason to stick with old other than familiarity and comfort zone. The 2.0.2 is plenty stable already and you add Cydia with Appstore, that's a potent mix. There is a few reason why Apple continued to provide better firmwares, namely bugfixes and stability. The only reason why I see all these instability coming from are the unlocking processes itself, Firmware 2.0.2 is plenty stable on it's own. Although the fact that the bulk of the regular guys here already moving to 2.0 and beyond must have accounted for something, otherwise people won't bother moving from 1.1.4 at all. String,
I dont think Apple is producing "better" firmware, start from FW2.0, it has been fixing old bugs and producing new bugs at the same time. Currently at 2.0.2, users found a security flaw and too many apps from Appstore will crash your iphone, Apple knew the problems and fixing the bug around the clock. This happened to not only unlock but also locked phone. If you have been thru the era of 1.0.2 to 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3 and 1.1.4, you will realise that the biggest improvement is on 1.1.2 in terms of speed and usability, and the most stable being 1.1.4. 1.1.4 is not "old" on iPhone2G, it is the final and last version, Fw2.0 is meant for iPhone3G (add new features for iPhone2G, but not improvement), as you can see 2.0.2 is a bug fix mainly for iPhone3G. Unless you are an iPhone3G users, for iPhone2G, preferable to stay in 1.1.4 until Apple release FW2.1 and above. Hope Apple dont end up like another M$. Thats the reason why I moved from Windoz Mobile/PPC to iPhone (Linux based). With the current lawsuit, http://www.internetnews.com/mobility/artic...suit+Widens.htm , Apple better buckle up. If not, Android phone (HTC will the first to use end of this year) will be the next replacement for my iPhone. This post has been edited by gpsp: Aug 29 2008, 10:55 PM |

Here you go again. On and on with fw 2.0.x dislike. I'm on fw 2.0.1 and i have no problems at all. As stable as fw 1.1.4. I have alot more going for me on fw 2.0.1 than you ever know. Also, since you mentioned Apple won't be producing "better" firmwares, please don't upgrade at all and even fw 2.1 as every fw does not favor you. So chill bro and keep to your fw 1.1.4 as you favor it to be the king of the mountain. Again, this thread is to help Allisonwoo. So let's keep it that way. Cheers |

Maybe you can open a thread on 1.1.4 vs 2.0.X so we can discuss it in a mature way (so no flaming there ok). This can be an insight for others whether to stay at 1.1.4 or upgrade to 2.0.X. We can also discuss your problem with your wifi. 2.0.X is not at fault as I can see people using 1.1.X also having this. @allisonwoo I've encountered the "phone need repair" situation last time when i left the phone not in sleep mode for the whole night. Maybe it was overheating or something but a normal reboot solve my problem. As for you, you can try restoring back to 1.1.4 or like other suggest, since you are restoring the phone, why not thry the new FW instead. Its just a suggestion from others and like david said, the ball is in your court. Whatever you do or decide, in the end the phone is still your phone. p/s - software upgrades are not perfect, so as the programmers that made it. Sure they patch up an old bug but unwittingly open another one, thats part n parcel of doing programming. I know as I myself is a programmer (part timer). There's no peice of software in this world that is bug free. |
