i think i'm the first owner here? just got it today with the rm500 rebate, 1gb ram and 320gb hdd upgrade for free.

build quality was better than expected, very solid to me in piano finish. only problem now is it's kinda hot under the touchpad.

yup it's the studio xps 16. it's abit warm on idle and get quite hot when gaming or so, anyway it didnt bother much if you use a mouse.

for benchmark it get around 4.8k+ on 3dmark06. the only game i tried is l4d at highest setting it get around 40-60fps and around 20 if turn on 8x AA.

the build quality is a big leap from dell inspiron to me and worth the price if got the rm500 rebate. lazy to take pictures atm. tongue.gif

not really sure what is it under the touchpad that make it so hot, it's not gpu, hdd or ram. laptop cooler should do the trick since there's quite a lot holes under the laptop.

Mind listing your full spec and the price?
*
the default spec with 4gb ram, 320gb hdd and 3 years complete care for rm4.8k. wanted to get rgbled screen but i think that resolution is too much for 16".

anyway tried crysis benchmark tool just now. 25fps on 1280x720 and 30fps on 1024x768 with medium-high setting (texture, object and shader high). gpu temp is around 75c when heavy gaming.

Hi. I have been waiting for a Dell laptop with 9600 GT. Instead this laptop comes with a ATI HD 3670. May I know which card is the better one? I am also wondering if anyone can compare this laptop with BenQ S42 or HP HDX 16T in terms of performance since I m interested in gaming...

Thx.  rclxms.gif

You can check the links of studio xps 16 review on first page. The 3dmark06 tested from them on studio xps 16 is almost the same to mine so i assume all the other laptop should have correct result. They did compare it with HDX16T/HD18T (9600M GT)in 3dmark06 so you can get a rough idea.

QUOTE(awls80 @ Jan 27 2009, 09:50 PM)
I'm not a gamer so I wouldn't know but is 75c considered normal temp when gaming? Would heavy Photoshop usage lead to approximately the same temperature? Sounds a tad hot!
*
I think 75c is quite normal for decent gpu in malaysia hot weather since i heard laptop like benq s42 can reach more than 90c when gaming. For me heavy photoshop most of the time will only load on the processor and ram so i think gpu temp wont be that high (correct if wrong).

Anyway here's some pictures i just took. People who like HP glossy design should like this laptop as well.

the laptop sleeve actually is in full black (camera flash), but it did look abit cheap because too thin.

for the palm rest i think is some glossy plastic, something like you can see from hp laptop.

the screen is WLED in 1366x768 and it looks good to me, no grainy or light leakage. it's the one from samsung.

btw can you give me the Hardware Ids code?
SEC????
just for my future reference.

anyone ordered Studio XPS 16 with RGB LED screen?
*
it's SEC5441.

not sure for others but to me 1920x1080 on 16" is seriously too small. even 32" lcd tv seldom have full hd. hope dell include some other resolution in rgbled screen.

I am interested in getting a 16 Studio XPS as well, I would like to know will the laptop become really hot when watching movies for a couple of hours and leave it on the whole day torrenting? Can anyone provide me with some temperature readings?? Please and thank you...
*
movies and torrenting wont be a problem for whole day, the temp will stay around idle temp but under touchpad will remain warm. not sure for blueray though

Yes, just arrived this afternoon; how do I like it? The RGB LED screen is freaking awesome!! The 'pinch' technique on the mousepad works too, but not quite like MacBook's standards.
*
so how's it? will it be too small on 16"? wish i can compare both screen side by side. tongue.gif

Added on January 28, 2009, 10:17 pmtension, can u confirm 1 thing with me.

on ur cpu-z

on the memory part its shown as DDR2
but on the SPD part its shown as DDR3.

is it rite ? and i thought our ram suppose to be DDR3 ?
*
only tested on 3dmark06. i'm not sure about cpu-z, from everest it did show ddr3. for the highest temp you mean gpu? i got around 75c stressed under furmark.

@gtolee88 : everest from www.lavalys.com. and yup it's that furmark.

@micdy : not sure about laptop cooler and i did post some fps rate for game before, check it out.

@awls80 : i think it's software incompatible problem on 64bit os, not the hardware.

@tention: Hehe, I see u in the notebookreview forum for xps 1640 owners! Can u tell me if what Wolfpup says in the forum is true? He said that when the screen is open, it partially blocks the vents behind, causing some of the hot air to go back underneath the laptop (or something like that), making the temp rise about 20 degrees. Some other people have disagreed with him so I'm just wondering who's right...

Is there a design flaw like he says there is? Any other owners having problems with airflow?
*
it's true that half of the vents are being blocked by the screen but i can barely feel any hot air coming out from the vents most of the time. most of them time my temp for graphic card, processor and hdd is below 45c as long as i'm not gaming so it seems quite normal to me for a laptop.

@Dackson : you must be very unlucky to get that unit. for question 6 you can only utilize full 4gb ram if you using 64bit bista. and for question 8 studio xps 16 here did not come with remote control, at least for now.

not sure why you get a no brand hdd but mine is a seagate and for the dvd drive it's actually optiarc from sony and nec (can google it). i never measure the temp of the laptop surface before but based from software it never goes above 80c for any of the parts to me without laptop cooler.

@micdy : izzit something like broken sound? you better called up dell and ask for replacement.

Its not broken sound... It sounded like something is blocking the speakers or smth... Its not as clear... Like there is a layer of smth there blocking... Is it normal?? rclxub.gif
*
i'm not so sure on your problem.. my speaker acting weird also last week, the bass (low notes) is very heavy and the volume is very low even on 100% and it sounds broken when volume higher than 50% on the left speaker. i think it also sound a bit like something blocking cause the sound is very weird comparing to other speaker. called up dell and the technician replaced the whole top panel (the whole thing with speaker, touch pad, touch panel, power button) for me. and now the speaker sound nothing like previous and can go very loud. i did notice they wrap the speaker with some tape on the new one they replaced.

I think mine is the same as what u said... I already called them up today to replace me with a new adapter as the one i got is buzzing... Might as well ask the guy to change the whole panel for me.. How long does it takes? Does the technician do it on the spot?
*
just call them again say your speaker got problem. it took me around less than an hour i guess to replace the whole panel and the technician do it on the spot in front of me, but he told me this is the first time he open this laptop because too new. sweat.gif

glad to see him replace the whole panel instead of the speaker itself only. also after he replaced the whole panel you will lost that 2 intel and vista sticker. remember to ask them to send you a new one, received mine 2 days after via DHL in a very big box for 2 sticker only.

ermm thinking of ordering this but there is something i wanna ask bfore i order
never really order dell laptop before so wanna make sure of something ^^'

did they giv driver discs?
*
ya, driver cd, vista oem cd and microsoft work (if you didnt order office from them).

anyway for those asking for remote control, it seems that studio xps 16 start shipping with tv tuner here, but you need to addon it yourself with extra rm162

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, my notebook didn't suffer from any physical defects or scratches.
With 7200rpm hard disk, there's definitely a more responsive feel to it; not sure how much performance does the DDR3 contributes.
There's no remote control and TV Tuner option for Dell Studio XPS 16 if I'm not mistaken.
*
there's new option for tv tuner and control currently in malaysia.
