Hello guys, what do you think regarding this combination -

D60 + Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD ?

Will the lens last me for a while before upgrading ?

The search is still on for DSLR and frankly I find that my target will be Nikon.

Added on August 28, 2008, 4:40 amAnyway zio, nice captures there you have.

D60 with the kit lens I suppose. Is that the Tamron 70-300mm with the Macro capability?

And thanks!

*
Is there any D60 body only sold ? And yeah that Tamron is with the Macro capability.

I believe you can ask for it. They usually deduct like RM300 I believe. Hrmm but wouldn't you want the 18-55mm range?
*
Owh, thanks. Anyway, if I were to get the Tammy lens (Tamron 70-300mm with the Macro capability), do you think I still need the kit lens 18-55mm ? I actually think I can save up few hundred bux blush.gif Sorry limited budget poor student here. Sold most of my pc hardwares to get DSLR to play with sweat.gif

Wah! U sold all ur PC stuff? Change hobby kar? Hehe

I cant be like you, can invest most of high end stuff hahaha. Not all la uncle, most only, leaving the basic hardwares (no worries, I still love the LianLi you modified, not for sale blush.gif ). To fund on new toy.

Because Im kinda familiar with Nikon after few months my friend's D40 in my hands, so I narrow down my choices to Nikon, still lotsa research and study to be done blush.gif

well, the 70-300mm is tele lens so you will have to compose things differently. Dont expect to take group shots or wide shots with the lens. I am sure you know.

It is quite a fine lens biggrin.gif I am also considering one tongue.gif
*
Thanks for enlighten me bro zio. I actually more into Macro and consider the lens is kinda best bang for buck. But as you said, group or wide shots, there will be time when the kit lens is needed too. Besides, Im still in learning process/progress, I guess I'll go with kit lens first, after getting understand with the camera, then only save more money to invest on better lens. What do you think ? Perhaps if go for SB600 first would be wise hmm.gif

QUOTE(xandman @ Aug 28 2008, 02:26 PM)
not really bro.
70-300 although its named MACRO...
it doesnt do actual macro...
but the focus distance is a bit shorter than the rest of the 70-300...
if u want to do macro...get a macro lense...
or use ur kit lense with raynox...
ask zio...i m sure he can tell u more...
*
With raynox ? Guess that'll save me few hundred bux before traveling into real Macro lens. Great. Thanks abang xandman.

QUOTE(zio @ Aug 28 2008, 02:34 PM)
Ahh if you are into macro, stick to the kit lens. Play around with it. Then look at a dedicated macro lens. smile.gif Yes, the 70-300mm Macro does take some good macro shots but nothing beats a dedicated macro lens if you are into that biggrin.gif

But for the D60, your only choice is probably the Nikkor 105mm or the Nikkor 60mm. You can use the Tamron SP90mm but you will have to manual focus for everything. At least with the Nikkor, you can still AF for portraits or other random stuff.
*
Aite noted. Will take the lens info into account. Its so hard to talk technically regarding the cam when you dont have one. Perhaps this weekend I'll go hunting, hope to get a good price. vladimir did offer a good price for d60 kit but the thing is hard to trust postage nowadays, afraid that camera will be lost during shipping. He's in Penang while Im in KL.

Thanks bro zio. Im sure there's lotsa stuffs I will ask in the future, gotta learn, effective way - learn with a camera in hand laugh.gif

i can get it for rm 2100 plus one extra battery for free and bag and tripod and 2gb card
*
I see, will scout around this weekend, if got no better offer sure I'll get back to you okie.

QUOTE(zio @ Aug 28 2008, 10:45 PM)
Hehe its a good start to macro by using the Raynox biggrin.gif
Ahhh you are probably using the kit lens? Its not a macro lens so you are not going to get as close as your T20's macro mode. Get a Raynox, or get a macro lens to get the job done. Alternatively, you can get lens like the 70-300mm Macro (Tamron?) and get closer than the kit lens.
*
Will definitely trying out the Raynox first before jumping to higher end macro lens. Judging from the pic you taken by Raynox, it was so nice icon_rolleyes.gif

QUOTE(dani_irwan @ Aug 28 2008, 11:42 PM)
Last weekend, I got to play around with my friend's 450D and her EX450 (Canon's speedlite, not sure if the model name is correct or not). It was my 1st time trying out a speedlight...so syiok one! I was bouncing the flash left right and centre, haha...also off the ceiling! The potrait shots I took simply amazed me...a far cry from the built-in flash for my D40, which produces pics that look like passport photos, haha. Suffice to say I'm really poisoned to get an SB-600 instead of a 55-200mm for my next upgrade smile.gif so in short bro, try out both things 1st (speedlight and additional lens) b4 u decide.
*
I see, yeah, SB600 is the speedlite that doesnt burn the hole in wallet yet performing wise. I really love the bounce flash. Today went to photoshoot skate competition in my college, the built in flash for my friend's D40 wasnt sufficient at all cry.gif

thanks for the tip

yeah, im thinking Canon 1000D since its newer and more features, (eg Live View, etc)
*
My case is Im already familiar with Nikon interface, so it might awkward using other brand, not that I dont wanna learn, its just I simply love Nikon interface (But to be truth yesterday using Canon 400d, the menu is simpler than Nikon as it has few shortcut buttons).

But based on 1000D review from dpreview.com, it doesnt score much compared to D60. But that's just a review. Buy what you think is right, afterall its your DSLR and you'll be the one who use it, not the people from the review tho icon_rolleyes.gif

I see, thanks. I guess after getting the D60, first toy would be that Di622. Want to get good potrait tho.

Don't know about you guys, but I wish I have a SB400 instead of the SB600 I'm using now whenever I go hiking. It's no fun carrying a heavy flash when you're panting climbing up hill/mountain, and the fact you don't need that much flash power for fill flash.

It's no fun either carrying a heavy flash on holiday (I do backpacking).

Your requirements are different than mine, I'm sure. But heck, I think SB400 suits my needs more than my SB600.
*
Then will you trade your SB600 for SB400 ? I dont mind go buy new SB400 and trade with your SB600. Haha. Joking bro tongue.gif

I think you can put it up for sale, and get the SB400 tho.

QUOTE(darthbaboon @ Sep 5 2008, 03:36 PM)
Swt.... to be honest, a prosumer camera with a super 18x zoom lets you do everything in one.

But since you ask, you can get the 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 VR... cover everything from wide angle to telephoto.

If you want a Macro lens that can be used for portrait as well, get the Tamron SP90, now released with built-in AF motor too.
*
QUOTE(zio @ Sep 5 2008, 03:38 PM)
bang for buck = 18-200mm. Everything you need in one neat lil package. Other than fixed aperture of course.

Macro/Portrait would be Tamron SP90 (since ada motor already) or save up for the Nikkor 105mm smile.gif
*
Sifu sifu sekalian recommend 18-200mm and Tammy SP90. Thanks guys. Starting saving up money blush.gif

And yeah, met Bro Ifer last night, nice guy he is. notworthy.gif

Went out to Ampang Lookout point to capture KL night scene, but most of my shot either underexposed or overexposed. Haih. Have to play with shutter speed and aperture more and more. Might post up the pics for sifu sifu sekalian comment.
