sorry for the noob question, can I see the difference if I'm using an amp like fiio with my cheapo phillip earbuds?

i believe it will add only small percentage of changes in term of sound quality....but hey...it's ur money and ur ears after all....

I doubt an amp would do much for your earphones, but a DAC (think sound card with no mic-in, and you're not far off. ), might give a significant different. However IMO, for a budget user @ beginners, upgrade your head/earphones should provide a bigger difference than a source upgrade. YMMV.
