but to register under msia psn, you have to register using ps3

create a new user (leftmost column in xmb), then sign in normally on the PSN column (2nd from right i think)

1 user (local account on ps3) can only associate with 1 psn id

1 ps3 can have up to 12users (or 16?) if i'm not wrong

try using opendns for dns instead of normal isp-specified dns

for ps3 there are 2 types of updates: firmware and game update (patch)

firmware is usually shipped with a game (not necessarily the latest)
ps3 prompts to update the firmware if it is connected to psn network and there is a new version on the server
normally people just download the update using computer and then transfer it to any usb drive to update the ps3
ps3 firmware is not incremental; so you can just update straight to the latest version
connecting to the psn requires you to have the latest firmware

game patches is downloaded according to the disc region (isnt affected with console region/psn id region)
once you pop in the game disc, it will prompt you to update firmware first (in disc, if your firmware is older than in the disc)
then it will check with the server if there are any patches

nothing you can do about the slow speed, except cycling your IP (assuming you use screamyx)
or download the patches using pc (proxy app). the details are in the first page. ctrl-f -> proxy

if a virus can infect a ps3, then heaps of homebrew apps for ps3 must have been created by now

it is already over 1 month without firmware update.. something is not right

AV port on ps3 can be connected with a few cables

1) composite (yellow red white, or svideo red white) -> resolution only 480i
2) component (green blue red red white) -> resolution up to 720p on ps3, 480p on ps2

ps2 & ps3 av ports are identical, so you can use ps2 composite/component cable on ps3 and vice versa. sony only supply composite (yellow red white) cable in the box though.

every downloadable content is tied to the PSN account

and a ps3 hdd cant be read by another ps3.

what you should have done:

1) deactivate your psn id on the console first
2) log in to your previous psn id on your new console & redownload the games

oh.. i didnt know backups from other ps3 can be partially restored

i thought the backup couldnt be read at all, as in 1-to-1 hdd swap.
