Basic Care Sheet For Scorpion
user posted image

Why keep Scorpion?
- Easy management
- Interesting to observe
- Very cheap monthly maintanance fees
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Choosing a Scorpion
- there are alot of species in this world. However, in Malaysia we dun have much choice to choose from
- The best scorpion for beginner will be Heterometrus Spinifer (Asian Forest Scorpion) And Pandinus Imperator (African Emperor Scorpion)
- Both are very docile and have minor venom and would prefer2 pinch more often than using its sting
- When we want to buy a scorpion from pet shop, make sure its not a wild caught
- Wild caught scorpion tend to have mites infection and are more prone to decease
- Look carefully on the scorpion body, make sure there's no white color dot on it. They are killer mites that can kill ur whole collection of scorpion
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Basic Housing
user posted image

- A small container will do for small scorpling
- Can change to 1-1.5feet guppy tank when reach adult size
- A scorpion's foraging territory usually is not very big so a big container is not necessary
- A community of scorpions is not recommended unless the owner is willing to take the risk of losing some
- However its rare for Heterometrus sp to cannibal each others
- A good hiding place, water dish, 2inch coco fiber/peat moss are necessary
- Add some pebble in the water dish to avoid drowning ur scorpion
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Diet
user posted image

Scorpling
- Cricket drumstick
- Mealworm parts (Some can take whole small mealworm)
- Cricket parts

Adult
- Adult cricket
- Superworms
- Mealworms
- Dubia roach

Its not recommend to feed with wild catch insect as it might carry mites or being pesticide
It is best to feed insect with 1/4 to 1/2 the size of your scorpion
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Molting
user posted image
- In order for a scorpion to grow, it must molt
- Every time a scorpion undergoes a molt it has gotten a little bit larger
- A scorpion's developmental progress is measured in instars (how many moults it has undergone)
- A scorpion will molt an average of 6 times until it is fully mature. After that, the scorpion will cease to molt
- In order for the scorpion to have a successful molt, it must be humid in the cage, or else the scorpion could get stuck in its old skin and die
- After the scorpion molts it will be a lighter color and will be very fragile, as the new skin is not hard yet
- During this critical time, you should not handle, feed pr disturb your scorpion in anyway
- The scorpion will not eat for a few days after the molt, and will probably stay hidden

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Handling
user posted image
- A scorpion is display pets and are never meant to be handle at all unless if its necessary
- Scorpion should be treat with respect and the right attitude when it comes to handling them
- To handle a scorpion, there are few way:
1:Pick Them Up By their tail
- Use a tweezer to pick them up by the tail
user posted image

2:Using a smaller container/vial
- Place a small container/vail in frong ur scorpion
- Gently push it into the container/vial
user posted image
user posted image

Venom
- All scorpion species possess venom. In general, scorpion venom is described as neurotoxic in nature
- Scorpions use their venom to kill or paralyze their prey so that it can be eaten
- However, envenomation by Heterometrus spinifer is similar to a bee sting in terms of the pain and swelling that results
- A sting on the thumb from a relatively non-dangerous scorpion often feels like the victim has accidentally struck their thumb with a hammer whilst driving in a nail
- Heterometrus species however, tend to use their pincher more often than stinging
- However if u are allergic to venom, its best to seek for medical treatment ASAP as it might be fatal

I don't blame you. You've probably seen that on Man vs. Wild(scorpion-eating scene). Cuting a scorpions tail off and keeping it as a pet would defeat the purpose of rearing one in the first place. We don't see people extracting the teeth off of their canines just because a bite could prove fatal in some cases. Learning more before posting would also help.

First and foremost, I believe in order to gain respect from others, one should first respect others. Spamming nonsense in my humblest opinion is disrespecting other hobbyist that are using the thread. Especially when you're spamming one liners like "creepy and this kind of pet not suit me.."

Secondly, if you are really keen in learning, I think first off is you yourself should do ample of research before actually concluding and posting insignificant thoughtless remarks such as "beware and careful scorpion's poison sting,hehe..why didn't cut scorpion tail?" That isn't exactly something that will make enhance your knowledge further. Try posting something like "do we need to cut off the sting off the scorpion tail before actually keeping them as pets?" I think that would allow you to gain more answers towards your curiousity.

As for your interest in keeping them, I would suggest you to start by getting an Asian Forest Scorpion or in other words, the Heterometrus Spinifer/Longimanus(scientific). They are the most common species here in Malaysia and are almost readily available everywhere. I do believe that there are some that is available for sale in our own LYN garage sales section too, try looking up.

However, before getting them, do google some basic caresheet/information about them. You can also opt for looking at videos or images before actually purchasing it. Here are some of the caresheets that I have found and I definitely do hope that it will be of great use to you. nod.gif

Here are the caresheets/informations :

Not exactly an essay yet, Ryo. You should see my ex-college's research folders, usually we had to like come out with 2000 words essays in a night. Our research folders are uber thick. I guess I got used to it and even now in my current college, I still do the same. Pretty hard to kick off that habit. And after being said, it does look a little alike. But I believe AES are far more robust than that. smile.gif

Yeah, passed away just a few weeks ago. Sigh... The fella just resurfaces whenever it wants to eat. doh.gif Otherwise it'll be in substrate or pretending to be a rock in the corner or something. So now got a nice big empty tank again. We christened him Pinch btw. It was a really good experience, keeping it.

My bf and I kinda dried it after it died and used it as decoration in my bf's room. Look so much like it was alive.

@Neshie: Keep it under the bed or in your cupboard la. Hehe... I'm planning to keep mine near my com in my com room. Nobody will notice. Hehe...

Wahahaha. If you really got then bring la! Ryo will sponsor battery!! Hahahaha. Anyway, I agree wif neshie. most typical chinese families don't like poisonous or dangerous pets. Which is why there was a lil problem when my old AFS got discovered and also when we brought our ally snapper home. biggrin.gif

Ryo, I know one place where I can keep and you cannot check. tongue.gif Be prepared to find 10 scorpionlings missing. Hahaha. Kidding la. One or two only la.

tongue.gif If can sex I want 2. If cannot sex I want 1.

@Andernya: Ryo's room is actually quite tiny. After his bed, only left 1 narrow space to put his table and laptop. And yeah, AFFS can hold. Their poison is just really painful when stung, provided you are not allgergic, it can't kill you. Ad AFS like to pinch with their pincers rather than sting.

Nez, just keep in your cupboard. I'm sure your dad won't check there. My AFS used to live in the cupboard.

Ryo is self promoting. Everyone look away! laugh.gif

Anyway nez, last time I keep in the cupboard. It survived just fine inside for 2 years. We only open the cupboard when we wanted to see it or was feeding it or misting it. Basically want or need. Otherwise it stays inside no probs. The room was air conditioned also. But in the cupboard remain quite warm. Cupboard will be ok.

Ventilation is when we open the cupboard lo. We stick a thermometer in the tank I used to keep Clip in just in case it was too warm or too cold but it was always in the right temperature zone. As long as we don't leave the cupboard door open too long when the air cond was on.

hmm.gif But many people consider scorpions as bugs right. Bugs are insects?

Whenever I hear people talking about bugs, it could mean spiders or the like.

Guy: That bug is poisonous ok. Becareful.
Me: What bug? *looking everywhere but the scorpion*
Guy: That scorpion la.
Me: =.=" Scorpions are anthropods. They're not insects.
Guy: Still a bug la.

How you wanna teach a guy like that? That was a real conversation.

arachnid is anything with 8 legs la.

Phylum : Arthropods >>>> Subphylum : Chelicerata >>> Class : Arachnida >>>>Order : Scorpion & Aranae [Class where tarantulas are under]

No names yet. I teased my bf about the scorps. He was very excited to see it.

BF: Where's the baby scorpion?
Me: Inside here (show him container with oatmeal and some mealworms in it somewhere. Thanks Ryo!) They're smaller than a
piece of ear wax.
BF: REALLY?! *looks hard in the container and jingles it a bit*
Me: tongue.gif I'm just kidding dear. How can it be so small. It's here (show him real container with a baby scorp in it)

Actually I am into tarantulas. I'm quite into exotics of all kinds. But wanna get a pacman frog before that. Hehe... Still doing research on it. smile.gif

@neshie: I will put the scorpion in his pants when he sleep and let it take revenge on my bf's brother if he mistreat the scorpion. biggrin.gif

Actually I'm considering if I should house them in a guppy tank first like neshie or straight away put them in a big tank. hmm.gif I'm a lil worried they have difficulty catching crickets once they have a few molts but are not big enough yet.

^ For some scorpions, it may be true. But AFS don't have poison strong enough to kill. But they make you hurt like hell when you get stung.

Not as much as impression, it's more like a general person's perception. That's why many families don't like their children to rear scorpions.

Ander, bring your bf to ryo's house and let him have a look at the baby scorpions la.

Scorpions are one of the most misunderstood creatures in the world, like snakes and tarantulas. They use poison against people for self defense.

I kept my AFS, Clip for a long tine. Never been stung although my bf and I frequently handle it.

Give me ur bf contact, i ll talk2 him
1of the reason i keep scorpion and tarantula was to educate those ppl with narrow mind/ have no knowledge bout them
My scorpion are so docile that i can even touch the cricket in the mama scorpion while she's eating
(I juz help2 crush the cricket head to end its suffering)
Did u explain2 him bout their venom?

Plus you can read their body language, when they're relaxed, resting, at ease, or feel threatened. Just be careful when you see your scorp in an attack posture.

tongue.gif but L's owner must have a hard time guessing.

L, your baby scorp with injured tail. L's owner is you la.

My clip used to let us touch his pincers too. and sometimes even the tail near his stinger when he's in the mood.

When u open the tank, see their reaction
Usually2 know her mood i juz touch her pincher with tweezer
If she no react mean good mood LOL
However i wouldnt really recommend other ppl doing tat....
Maybe different scorp will react differently and this might stress them

Aiya my scorpling all also defensive de la
When open container straight in warning position lol
Good sign for a healthy scorpling

biggrin.gif Yesterday when we went home, my bf and I were handling Timmy. My bf christened him Timmy. Not sure if it'll stick. Why Timmy? I have no idea. My bf has weird naming sense.

It's so cute!!! wub.gif Can't believe that tiny cute thing will someday become a cool scorp like my Clip.

When it's ready to attack, it holds its tail up on top of its body in preparation to sting. Don't play play when you see it in this position.

A relaxed and and walking scorp has its tail straight all the way to the back.

Neshie, it's still young. The sting probably doesn't hurt. Now is the only time you can handle it with low risk of feeling pain when stung. When grow big dy u must be very careful dy.

Good excuse! Plus get it soon. Cuz his scorpionlings are still quite small. so it doesn't look harless at all.

tongue.gif It looks like a lil spider with pincers and a stinger. It was walking on the back of my arm yesterday. VERY interesting. They're so laid back. And the pinching hurts a lot less than a small sized hermit crab.

Ryo, wat assigment? Yesterday's? Still not done??

The manual was in german so I dunno what they were talking about.

Comes with a sponge as well and a toolbox to keep them all. And all you have to do is just refill the butane when it runs out.

They can kinda deflate themselves into very very thin and slip through the tiny crcks. I saw it in national geographic once. So they tell people who live in places with scorpions to frequently check their houses for cracks and seal up any that you can stuff a coin as big as 50 cents into. (We're talking about the thin width at the side, not the height of the coin).

LOL, I keep my mealies in a container with blended with hammie food. None of my family members even knew about it until my mum almost landed her foot in it.

Umm....imho the unidentified scorpion in the Mid Valley Pets Wonderland isn't a Pandinus Imperator aka AES. First is because I've seen it myself as well and its definitely not an AES seeing that I own one myself, they seriously don't look the same. Most probably just another Heterometrus sp. Could be a Heterometrus Laoticus too as they were around the local market a couple of months back. Also, given the fact that most pet shops would prefer wild caught specimens more than captive bred ones, I guess that gives further assurance. And plus with the current conservation status on the Pandinus Imperator, I seriously doubt one can get adults at RM50 cost price, let alone below that. smile.gif

As a matter of fact, he does. And plus, I think he's referring to another issue in which I'm not really too sure myself. But as for not enough species to choose from? Heh, that isn't exactly an issue lol. Even with Ts, we don't usually see any other species besides that few common ones in the market aye? wink.gif

Solution : Improvisation.

Well, the unavailability of species is one factor. Importing is possible and yes, I've done it with a few good men here but it sucks when there are so few people interested in the hobby as opposed to tarantula keeping. It gets a lil boring sometimes when the hobby revolves only around a few people.

I like scorpions very much but it would be an extreme plus point for the scene to bloom like the tarantula scene(not that it's amazing but still, better).

We need more serious hobbyists, people who are willing to spend an extra buck to get something from abroad which is presumably unavailable in the local market. Of course, if you can't afford it then I don't blame you.

In short, we need more passionate scorpion enthusiasts. PASSION. Expand the community.

well, bout getting other scorpion in, some would be really deadly, same goes for tarantula, but yet, i wonder why tarantula gets more attention than scorpion? hmm... is it coz of availability or just less demanding?

About the subject on deadly scorpions, it's really not a cause for concern. There are more non-medically significant species than deadly ones. Besides, a real enthusiast would know better than to handle a highly venomous specimen such as the A. Australis. Only idiots would do so. ;p

Exactly. It really really annoys me when I see retards who post statements like that. At least be a little sensible and f***in do some research before warning people when they clearly don't know shit.

I see this all the time, retards with their lala-zai language going,'got poison one ooo??? can cut off the tail one o? better lu.'

It's not like they're interested in the hobby. They're merely asking for the fun of it. Our country is really a leading country in terms of the population of retards. Damn sad. IMO, less retards and more scorpions would do much better. Don't ya all agree? smile.gif

Not enough source to support that claim just yet. We normally talk about Heterometrus sp. or the occasional Lychas sp. and Liocheles Australasiae.

@.@ I'm kinda lost. Too many scientific names.

I think the prob wif malaysians is that they're not open minded and not educated. Worse, the combinations bring people who are not even open minded enough to be educated. I've told countless people that AFS were quite harmless as long as you respect them. And if you're not messing around with them enough to irritate them, they won't sting. They would just look unsure and unbelieving. geez. shakehead.gif

Yeah, an AFS primary weapon would be its pedipalps(pincers), they rarely use their telsons(stingers) as a defense mechanism. Even if they do sting on rare occasions, it's nothing to worry about, unless you have some sorta allergy then I'm sorry. ;p

biggrin.gif Well, seeing is believing. If people can see that scorpions can be handled, then it might not be so dangerous. We're not asking people to cuddle em. In fact, don't! laugh.gif

People are close minded about scorpions because they know it's venomous and should be avoided as much as possible. What they think is "can die wan if get stung. Don't touch!"

ok we need balthasar in here NOW! tongue.gif

well, he's one of the premier hardcore keeper along with a few others last time. now MIA already...

anyways, T's are easy to up keep and breed. Scorpions have short life spans, and most of them are small. when i say small, yes, they're SMALL...usually half a cm? which posts a lot of problems, like feeding ones and so on. Roaches and pin heads are not available all the time. it makes feeding a very hard chore especially if you have picky feeders. because of that, most of them are sold young. I2, I3. They wont survive long at the new owners. easier said then done. You can call your self a "hardcore" keeper bla bla bla if you have like 20 species. note the "you can call...." you can call your self anything. I'm superman. but like everything in life, making a statement and doing something is 2 whole diffrent thing.

No hard feelings to anyone, but if you're complaining, why not do it? smile.gif

what i'm trying to say is not every species is like AFS. Easy to obtain and most already gravid when collected. and slings mortality rate is less then 5% each batch. thats why you see more AFS then any other thing. no one wants to bring in scorpions because they costs a bomb. wou you pay rm80 for a A. Australis, adult, wild collected and unknown age. well certainly i wont.

even local species, people thinks that its better to export them. heck Scutilus goes for bout US$25 each. why sell it for Rm30 when its so easy to export them?

these hobbies are slow growing ones. i remember when Rosea slings was rm50 each...ahhhhhh.....those were the days...Brachy slings all bout Rm1XX..now? rm30 also can get d...whistling.gif

Slow growing I agree. But my point was, the tarantula scene is already flourishing while our scorpion scene is not. Abroad, in USA namely, both scorpions and tarantulas have almost equal attention(albeit the tarantula still getting the upper-hand) whereas our country, it's only tarantulas.

I would beg to differ on the subject of breeding. IMO, breeding scorpions are easier than tarantulas. Scorpions make good mothers as opposed to tarantulas as the risk of having the female chomp up the male is close to nil. The absence of the need to care for an egg sac is another factor.

The problem is, like you said, nobody would want to spend RM80 on an adult scorpion but seriously, if nobody starts, the hobby would never expand. I personally have spent USD60 for a pair of Jacksoni specimens. Besides, CB scorpions are easy to come-by nowadays. What's lacking is the passion. Price and availability are just excuses.

wah...Jacksoni's are worth that much already? drool.gif drool.gif

scorpions breed at a much alower rate compared to T's and are much harder to manage because of their feeding habits. BJ's are ok. Their sling quite big no? 0.8-1cm?

slower means, like 1 year an average BJ can mate 3-4 times. 4x25 slings each time =100...T's 1 egg sack around there also? put the feeding habits and mortality rate in there? how many would survive to breed the next generation? thats what i mean by "harder to breed" also, you can guarantee 4 "sexy times" a year no?

you tried raising Tityus spp. slings?

EDIT: Rafiq wanna give some imput about the feeding habits of your tityus? brows.gif

EDIT2: dint see your post there rafiq. Yes we saw wild ones before. mostly lioches spp. which is fairly if not VERY common, followed by lychas spp, like muchronatus and stuff, and AFS's. AFS found mostly ground level, which barks, like their names in barks, rotten trees, while lioches is guaranteed to be at most fallen tree trunks with peeling bark.

What taggy say is true. I too would say that scorpions breed at a much more slower rate compared to Ts. Im not really too sure about which scorpion does best in breeding but given even if its B.jacksoni, when you compare them to tarantula species such as the Lasiodora sp. that is fairly easy to breed and each egg sac bears about 2000+/- to 5000+/- spiderlings and the Pterinochilus sp. that is considered as uber easy to breed bears like two sets of egg sac after each time they mate. As in, after laying their first egg sac, they get another egg sac after that. Tarantulas make good mothers too, its just that most breeders/keepers don't provide the proper or in other words correct environment/condition for breeding most of the time.

I personally know successful breeders that experience even first time mothers doing very well most of the time given the environment/condition is correct. In fact, I too know some keepers who have mothers that has had egg sacs more than once but still continue failing. Aside from the quantity of the spiderlings being more than scorpions, tarantulas also have the upper hand in quality in a sense where spiderlings have much more higher chance of surviving compared to scorpions. So yes, scorpions do breed at a much slower rate compared to Ts.

One more thing, the risk of females chomping up males? Believe it or not, that risk is lower than keeping scorpions communally and ending up with cannibalism. Though, that does kinda depends on what species. Most of the old world Ts are superbly gentle to the point where you can keep both the male and the female together in one enclosure for a whole month and worry about nothing. New world Ts on the other hand depends highly on which species you're talking about. Some are okay, some are not really. There is a reason why even in the west, Ts are more often bred compared to scorpions. The reason why the hobby seems as though as more "active/passionate" in the states is most probably due to the number of native species they have there in America itself that are much more common or in other words popular in the hobby.

Where as comparing to them in the states, we probably have much lesser choice because hell, I bet you a million bucks that a tom d*** and harry won't be able to name me another species of scorpion other than the Heterometrus sp. Its just popularity in my opinion, most species here in Malaysia aside from AFS isn't exactly popular at all in the hobby. Try looking up all the species of scorpions in Malaysia and I believe if you are a true enthusiast, you too will fall in love with them. Lesser choice? Now think again.

Heck, I personally don't believe that you need to have all the species in the world to prove how passionate you are in the hobby. Same goes to how I think about hobbyists here, they don't need to have all the species in the world to prove how passionate they are. In fact, I believe being passionate has a lot of subjectivity to it. Maybe for some certain people, keeping all the species of scorpions is considered as being passionate(well if you are, by all means keep up with what you're doing), but for some people, they have their passion in the conservation status of their own respective local species. And some people with many more other different way of being passionate about the hobby itself.

I think the main thing that we need to remember is that the hobby isn't just about KEEPING scorpions, but more or less, just scorpions. You don't really need to spend lots of money and get lots of other species to expand the hobby. They are many other ways too. Think, because it is already expanding now although given the fact that the availability of oversea scorpions is worst than last time. wink.gif

Actually, it's more easier to keep scorpions communally than tarantulas. There are quite a large number of species of scorpions which are actually communal. However, like you said, it depends largely on the species given but generally, scorpions are definitely much more communal than tarantulas.

Kar, I agree on your stance about the subjectivity of the term 'passion'. Indeed, you don't have to have all the species in the world to prove how passionate you are. You can merely keep one species, study them thoroughly and yes, you're passionate. But c'mon, in our country, how many keepers actually have that kinda passion? They do not even have the initiative to source for other species, let alone be passionate about conservation and etc.

On the subject of 'not having to get many other species to expand the hobby', well, I'll give you a simple comparison. What if the tarantula scene only has the, say, Brachypelma Smithi available? I doubt the hobby would become what is it now. What I'm trying to say is, yes, there are many other ways to expand the hobby but given the mindset of the majority of us humans, more variety equates to a more interesting hobby.

On a side-note, most people who get the AFS are not exactly interested in the hobby. It's more like 'zomgwtfbbq that huge black scorpion is so cool, having one would be a status symbol' and etc. and by all means, having such people in the community does nothing to expand the hobby. Expand in terms of quantity but never in quality and I'm pretty sure that quality > quantity in terms of hobbyists. People also dig the AFS because of its size but they rarely give a shit bout the smaller species due to it being less 'cooler-looking' so yeah.

Last but not least, why are the other lesser genus/species in our country such as Lychas and Liocheles less popular even amongst serious hobbyist locally? As TAG stated in one of his earlier posts, a Lychas Scutilus would fetch USD25 in the states so why would local breeders bother about selling them to us locals? Greed has prevented the hobby from growing. Period. I never said that we have lesser choices in our own country, but the availability in the market is pathetic, due to...greed.

p/s : TAG deserves a thumbs-up for helping us with the availability of the Lychas Scutilus. Liocheles maybe? biggrin.gif

liocheles a lot...come frim and catch...or wan me catch and sell Rm10 anyone? whistling.gif essay so long...OMG...

the part where the sting comes in, i think the lychas spp. in malaysia packs quite a punch...can be fatal if you're allergic according to sting reports...tongue.gif

EDIT after reading essays: yes, in this line, greed always plays a far bigger role then all keepers put together. smile.gif

also, its so hard to get them scuts. supplier also like "aiyah, got waiting list lar" "aiyah here raining lar" this and that. so i have to wait also. sorry to people that ordered..

You haven't seen the eagle swoop in for the kill yet, Dennis. Listening to Frank Zappa makes so much more sense nowadays. But seriously, this thread is getting better already! Now there's something to think about.

Tag - Feeding early instar scorps can be a real b****. Especially the barks. If you ask me, I'll tell you to ask the oldskool hobbyists on how they kept going at it for years. We are nowhere near them.

liette' - I'll give you 2 if you really want them. No need to buy! Don't make Tag richer than he already is. tongue.gif

Kar - Learning about the species already gives half the pleasure buddy.

P/s:
1. If anyone happens to stumble on more info on local scorpion species. Drop me a pm.
2. Don't release something that you think won't make it through the fight for survival in the wild. Tag is just pulling your leg there!

Rofl, we're all still far from being ducks, Dennis. Ducklings at best. sad.gif

H. Arizonesis would be a great starter desert scorpion but I doubt you'd find any locally.

I'll be more blunt. That probably is the only desert species you know. Quit quacking about things that can cause serious harm. Forgot to put 'fat' in between? Zzz...

Ryo, Vaejovidaes are also nice and quite hardy, not to mention the fact that scorplings may cost as little as Scutilus.

If I recall correctly, the yellow fat tail scorpions are actually the A. Amoreuxi which is a very well known medically significant scorpion.

Before and after(sorry, didn't managed to take pictars of scraping process) of scraping mites off my newly adopted 2 inch "mite infested" Pandinus Imperator given by my brother. This was done by using a cotton bud and vaseline. The good ol' mite scraper. I know there are still some beneath the exo skeleton but given theoretically, the vaseline should not only help in getting the mites off the scorpion, but also it may help in terms of suffocating any remaining mites on the scorpion. Gotta put it under observation for a week at least for that.

Before
Attached Image

After
Attached Image

This method is by far the most effective way of scraping mites as far as I have seen with my own eyes the methods that has been used. Hopefully, it can be as effective towards scorpion as well. smile.gif

I guess I misunderstood your post. Was thinking u missed the before and after photos since the mites in the 'before' photo are beneath the scorpion, though not literally under the exoskeleton. Was thinkin that it was a language error by Kar. heh.

since they're slings quite hard lar...one way u can do is to let it dry out. minimal water. they can get enough to sustain life thru their crickets. so just leave them in dry tissue. a few molts after should be ok..

hi guys, im new here. seems interesting to get a scorpion but must research and read up on it first before deciding.

I saw in the first few pages that someone (i think it was jamien? not sure) kept her scorpion in a cupboard in her aircon room. is that okay? tot it might be too cold and unventilated

What kills the mites also kills the scorp, so it's quite a difficult one. How good is the ventilation now?

If all else fails, take it as - destruction also breeds creation. Lol! But keep trying first. This won't help, but it's got nice pics > Link

IcedNyior - Aircond should cause not much of a problem. As long as there's a way to maintain humidity and the temperatures don't drop to subzeros. Welcome to the thread, and I like you're nick. Nyior..you from north?

no, nothing like subzero temperature. juz wondering where is the best place to keep a scorpion (should I choose to get it). The coco fiber/peat moss thingy, its sold in bags is it? whats the rough cost for maintaining these scorpions? can i keep a scorpling in those guppy tanks that are commonly used for turtles?

Im not from north (despite the nick). Its a different version of my older nick - coconutice - which was a bit too common smile.gif

cost for maintaining scorpions? it depends how many.

Coco fiber is sold in bags at 1U Home Centre, gardening section. RM2-3 for a small bag which is enough for 5-10 small guppy tanks depending on the amount of coco fiber used per tank.

There is basically no cost in maintaining scorpions, not unless you count the RM1 you'd be spending on crickets/mealworms every month. And yes, you can keep a scorpion in guppy tanks. A scorpling would do fine in the smallest variation of the brand.

If you're wondering, you should provide enough coco fiber for your AFS(which I presume you'll be getting) to burrow. They are, afterall, a burrowing species. A small water dish in the form of a mineral water bottle cap would suffice(for a scorpling). The substrate should be kept moist at all times and there is no need to change the substrate but of course, you can change it if you think it needs changing but personally I've not changed my AFS enclosure's substrate since February.

Well it's safe to assume that scorpions don't like stuff bigger than they are, including us. So what I do is, I put the mealie right under their mouth parts and they'll start eating straight away. My Clip used to catch his own crickets that I leave in his enclosure so we get to see him in action whenever we buy new crickets and throw it in his enclosure.

^ Yup I agree actually. It isn't guaranteed that exotics will eat in front of you and you can never get cuddly with it. And they are still very similar to their wild cousins and living the same way they do in the wild.

So respect them for the special and beautiful creatures they are and don't expect them to do what they wouldn't naturally do.
