Hi guys,

I have a question in mind. I read thru this thread and notice that the only person authorize to coach/teach OWC is PADI Instructors and NOT Divemasters.

I would like to know if we/I have the right to request the Instructor to show his/her PADI Instructor license as a confirmation?

Kindly advise.
*
Actually you should ask for their license as confirmation but be smart, ask in a way that wont offend them. but most the time if you call resort/dive shop to arrange course, it will be definitely a instructor who will conduct the course itself.

after all, scuba diving industry is about reputations. laugh.gif

Yes Divemaster is like a 1 level before the Instructor (PADI, SDI, NAUI, etc etc). Of course there is also another Assistant Instructor level if you want to add it in.

Only Instructors can certify.

Yes you have the right to request for the License info.

I guess, it is better to check with your diver friends who is a "Good" instructor.

I know many "strict" instructors if you need smile.gif

Strict as in, if you are not "good" enough, they will NOT pass (certify) you.

However there are also many instructors out there who will certify you regardless whether you are up to par or not.

juz bac from my open water dive course 4d3n at Redang Pelangi. Noting to shout about the resort as they all look the same. u get wat u pay.

wat i can say is the service is good. the dive center is great. the experience is superb. now i am a happy scuba diver.
Eric, thanks for the great  service.

Sorry, didn't get a chance to say hi to you. I was in Redang the day you checked out.

I am glad that you enjoyed your trip, and got your certification.

You can always come back to Redang to visit biggrin.gif

On another note:

I went with my friend on his discovery dive just 3 days ago, at the big rock where you did your confine water (Redang house reef), guess what the "Lucky bugger" saw on his first dive (discovery), we saw a 1.5 feet turtle and a school of black baby tip sharks (3 of them!).

I guess he would be back for his certification tongue.gif

Of course I will find a way to ask for their license number & yet not to offend them.

Actually in my opinion, we have the rights to ask them to show their license number or certification as a confirmation. This is to make sure we are learning from qualified & certified instructor. Not some cha-pa-lang so called instructors.

I guess I'll go with semi-strict instructors. At least I know where I went wrong underwater.

couldnt agree less! i think semi strict DIs are the best. my frens got a really really strict DI and after attending their first confine pool training, they dreaded to go for the second time.. sigh! doh.gif

don't worry about offending them. you have every right to ask for their certification card.
anybody can claim to be an instructor, but ask for their instructor card to be sure. if they refuse just walk away. no point on taking up the course with him/her if they can't even produce their card. But the good news is that most dive centres display their certificates openly when you visit them. So the chances of you running into a bogus instructor is kinda low.
One more thing is that make sure that the instructor did renew their membership. PADI used to have a system of stickers that attach onto the certification card but that has been discontinued. The next best way to to ask them to print their status from the PADI members site.

Or you can go to PADI Pro Chek and key in their member number to verify their active status.
Non teaching status instructors cannot certify divers.

I read this scuba diving article in today's Star Weekend newspaper saying that prior to your flight, preferably to have 24 hrs rest from diving. This is because of some nitrogen transfer in the body, which I'm not quite sure about.

So if you have flight on morning of day 3, and your last dive was on evening of day 2. How do you overcome the nitrogen thingy?
