This is purely my own opinion and i don't want to step on anyone's tails especially island based DCs.

Anyway, i would recommend to start off with pool sessions to "level up" your skill first. Some schools (such as the one i go to) will let you have as many pool sessions as you need until they think you're stable enough to go out to the open ocean. I only did 2 sessions, i know people who did 5.

Once you are ready, just follow the school out for their planned trips. All you need to do is your basic OW skills and BAM, can start diving.

As for my experience, i did my OW in KL then had my exam in Lg Tengah. Was an amazing experience. At night while we are partying, can see the students who are doing their entire course on the island, studying.

This sucks. Any experienced diver will tell you that after 4 dives in a day, the last thing you want to do is study. I also hear that this will result to people losing interest in the hobby cos it becomes an unenjoyable experience.

My 2 pence. I hope you enjoy diving as much as i do. I've only gone on 1 trip and am taking my AOW already biggrin.gif Will be heading to Sipadan in 2 weeks and then to Tioman in early April.

p/s: you can check out malaysian underwater forums http://malaysianunderwater.com/smff

Alot of people offering courses and such there. GL!

I regretted doing my OWD in Perhentian island. Didn't do my homework on dive centers, was in a rush to get my license and just simply pick a dive master to intro me to a dive center. I didn't learn much. Had some fun, but I had more fun after exploring more opportunities and getting to know more about diving. I did my Rescue with another dive center and I was one of those who had to assist the instructor with the OWDivers during the certification dive trip. And from what I see, they learn so much more than me and had so much more fun as well.

Some instructors just want the money. They won't teach you extra information. They might not share experiences with you.
They might not even go thru the entire theory book with you. Well, this is just base on my experience. smile.gif
I did 2 discovery scuba before I went for my OWD.
Yes, first time discovery scuba was really the wow. But I think it also depends on the dive master/instructor who bring you for discovery. My 2nd time wasn't that interesting. tongue.gif
If you ask me, I'd say definitely go for confine water first. Not the whole 3D2N thing on island.  wink.gif

Agree on both statements above. I did my OWC in perhentian over a 4 days duration. Damn boring at night need to watch videos and study. Better do all the paperwork on mainland and relax on the island.

Most important is that you choose an instructor that you feel that you're ngam with. At the end of the day, its a chemistry that matters the most. There's always boring lecturers/teachers and good ones.

thanks for the reply. In wat aspect did they regret it?

Most of them regretted about time management, not enough skill that they have learned, moment when you are doing course (I know some freelance instructor or small shop videoing their student when doing the course), extra skill.

Yeah...SGD8 for diver, SGD10 non-diver and SGD5 for DM above. Early Bird SGD25 for 3 days entrance free T-shirt. Worth for people looking for UW Camera or Video.

Yeah its a cave. I'm using double tank to enter that cave, using Tec50 cert. I have seen AOW divers get in but if you stay with high end resort, they will not bring you if don't have any qualification. I don't know whether 1 tank is enough or not but its horror.

I heard the shop in Taipan having sale on FB also and not enough time to pay a visit, what brand they are selling?

Matta Fair : Is it good price for Sipadan resort? Never been there...

I see. I'll check out more info on the cave and see how it goes. I'm going with another friend of mine who is quite a new diver, so most likely he won't be able to join us for the cave dive.

They sell all sorts except Pinnacle I think, mainly Bare and Akona, I think I saw some Sherwood BCDs. Got lots and lots of masks lol. Lots of stock. Price were quite reasonable. I bought a pair of Akona booties for around RM50+ and another Bare wetsuit for around RM200, the wetsuit was on 40% off. Even their dive comps were on 40% when I was there. Too bad their credit card system wasn't up yet and I didn't carry so much cash with me.

The last time I went to Sipadan 2 or 3 years ago was booked thru Matta Fair as well. It was around 2.6k for 6D5N at Borneo Divers inclusive of dives and equipment rental everything. We had 4 days permit to Sipadan somemore. It wasn't me who went to Matta fair to book it that time, so I'm not sure about the other resorts.

FUUUU 4 Sipadan days?? I was there recently on 5D4N with SWV (~RM2.5k), only 1 Sipadan day sad.gif
Around which time of the year did you go? I'm just wondering if there is a low-ish season whereby there aren't that many tourists.
