QUOTE(zabel8484 @ Dec 24 2012, 04:46 PM) Hi, Hi, welcome, i am new too... so you not alone...why not show us some of your bonsai to share... I'm Zabel from Melaka. Just got interested in Bonsai a few weeks ago. seems like only Bonsailelong and G400G400 left from this huge forum of bonsai mania..lol ok first, i'm a guitarist and my hobby is playing music, then now (i think my age is catching up) i'm into bonsai.. I'm inspired by my friend from work, a 55 years old guy who is a bonsai lover since he is 30. some photos of the bonsai he started in our factory's smoking area using recycle toilet bowls... Then i started my journey on getting bonsai in Melaka... This post has been edited by g400g400: Dec 24 2012, 06:43 PM |

QUOTE(Bonsailelong @ Dec 25 2012, 10:10 PM) BONSAI MATERIALS - Part 1 If any body think that he or she buys a small seedling or a grow from branch cutting , plant it in a pot and give all the care to it and hope one day it will become one like we see at the bonsai exhibition or competition. I'll say that will never happen. Even a shohin bonsai, if plant from a seeding in a pot that might a long long time. (or will never able to achieve the expectation) I've been to a bonsai nursery several years ago, while admiring the bonsai on the displace benches and non intention asked the nursery owner about his source of supply, unwillingly he answered " Plant my own lah ". I began to get curious and started investigating. I saw at the end of his nursery got a low zinc fence, so looked over and saw something simply amazing. Lots of difference species of plant tall and short, growing in rows - that was a bonsai nursing yard! Nothing grows better and faster other than on the ground because that's our Mother Earth. And so from that day onward I bought only grows from cuttings, small seedling plants of difference species, started to learn air layering, propaganda from branches cuttings &....... so on & so on. Unfortunately, I've limited space in my garden, and yet by making use of the land between the road and the sides of my house I started my very own Bonsai Nursing Yard. (to be con't) |

QUOTE(zabel8484 @ Dec 27 2012, 11:42 AM) Wow, to have a place like bonsailelong to grow bonsai is simply amazing, I only have a small tiled area to put bonsais, and yet my wife still grumbles all the time i bring in a new collection.lol.. btw, where is your location? seems that you can buy those young bonsai at very cheap price.. (RM10). For me over here in Sarawak, very expensive, small ones like yours will cost about rm30-rm50, even tiny ones growth from cutting will cost RM15-RM20.. I just bought a boxwood after inspired by bonsailelong and g400g400's post on it previously. I potted it to a bonsai pot and i have cut almost 40% of it's root. don't know if it's ok becoz it won't fit to the new pot if i don't cut it. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Added on December 27, 2012, 1:35 pmBonsailelong, i really envy you lah... you got so much bonsai, all growth by yourself, and as for me, don't have any empty state land to make bonsai nursery. btw, looking forward to you interesting bonsai series, looking forward to it (like HK drama series) ....... [attachmentid=3229413] This is a specie of Hokkien Tea. But not the actual bonsai Hokkien Tea. There are many people plant this as bush fencing around their house. But still you can train it to become a bonsai. Added on December 27, 2012, 11:07 pm Bonsailelong, can you show us the actual bonsai Hokkien Tea. QUOTE(zabel8484 @ Dec 30 2012, 11:02 PM) you are definately right... i started getting into bonsai thing only this year... where as Bonsailelong have a track record of more then 15 or 20 years...but nevermind, we are luck to have him here i am always learning from his advises !! i find that bonsai is like drug addict, once you into it, you keep wanting more and more... for me if i go to nursery, when i see potential candidates, my hand got itchy, sure buy... Added on December 31, 2012, 9:04 am QUOTE(Bonsailelong @ Dec 30 2012, 10:05 PM) For G400x2's Fukien Tea..... It looks quite out of proportion. Here's my suggestions. Cut the lower branches foliage smaller, always expose the branches & don't let leaves grow up to the main stem. The top 3 levels make the tree look out balanced. Cut all of them the away and let the new shoots grow back and form one cone like apex only. Fukien Tea can grow very fast, don't worry about over cutting (but not cut until botak) Your Fukien Tea looks very healthy and over feeding. I suggest you don't put any fertilizer at this stage and do defoliation. the grow back leaves will definitely be smaller. will air layering affects the main tree? what soil mix do i need for air layering?? wah so many questions... hope you dun mind..tqvm. QUOTE(infrasonic @ Jan 1 2013, 01:52 PM) all can be easily available at local nursery..Added on January 1, 2013, 7:40 pm QUOTE(Bonsailelong @ Jan 1 2013, 01:39 PM) Bonsailelong, instead of cutting off the top3 levels, can i do an air layering, once the roots grow then i cut it off, then i will have another hokkien bonsai...LOL. i have never try air layering before, i read about it, i wanna try it, can you give me tips ? how long will the roots appears to grow? Bonsailelong, thanks for the great information, but i couldn't find the soil you use over here, can i just use what they label as 'Peat Moss Cultivated Soil' thats what the 'taukeh' of the nursery recommend me.. will air layering affects the main tree? what soil mix do i need for air layering?? wah so many questions... hope you dun mind..tqvm. Air Layering. The soil material that I always use. [attachmentid=3236704] [attachmentid=3236708] If successful, new roots should emerge in 2 months, probably can cut and transplant in 3 months pending on how fast the roots grow. QUOTE(Bonsailelong @ Jan 3 2013, 04:57 PM) I got a neighbour helping me to water my bonsai while I was away. i am no so lucky to have such a good neighbour, i was quoted price about rm500 for automated system for 50pots, c/w timer, dunno whether its worth the price or not... But still I got to put all of the pots together under the shade in difference groups so to enable watering work can be easily done. And got to buy a good present when I returned. In your case, if no neighbour available, auto sprinkle water system should be fine. But got to group all your pots together and test out before leaving. |
