for the details, it mentioned the rosemary only needs 1 year for the tree to be ready as a bonsai material from seed. but only last for 30 years.

Welcome Jootat,

If i'm not wrong, we plant them in a deep pot until we get the bonsai material we want, trunk size..etc.. then we repot to bonsai shallow pot by pruning the root for training.
Trunk and nebari first , then the upper part, branches and shape/style later when you got a good base.

Am i rite Bonsailelong?

Just watched this documentary last Sunday, on a Bonsai sifu called Shinji Suzuki.
Great inspiration you can get from this . But most of the great Bonsai here is more to Japanese black pine , or the 5 needle pine which are truly beautiful.
One more thing is a giant 7000 years tree there in Japan.
WOW!!

A great 50 min spend for this.

I got this from ibonsai forum about japanese black pine,

"
about 20 years later, and from seed [ Japan, a gift pack posted to me,] I would say no. Additionally, a German guy also told me that the Japanese Black Pine grows all the way down onto the beach in Japan. You may wish to check and see if the Japanese Black Black wasn't originally a Chinese Black Pine and if it came from the coastal area of South China.

What may give you problems is translating the training information from Japan to tropical conditions and responses.

I have several pines and every year add on a few more seedlings, just to keep figuring out the training technique.

I live in the Caribbean, and we have a pronounced dry season from January until around May, growing cooler by October until say February[ lowest normal night temperature 19 deg.c and lowest recorded temperature 15 deg.c ]
Daytime is a standard 30 -> 33 deg.c as summer comes on.
Breezy island.

Soil mix is mostly crushed silica sand [ 70 % ] and compost. Testing the use of crushed, porous, eartheware red brick, from our local brick factories. Gives excellent drainage.
Growing containers are simple, peasant made earthenware lowfired red brick round flower pots, up to 16 inches wide [ 41 cm ] and 5 to 6 inches deep [ 12 to 15 cm ]
Placement full sun with a light zephyr.

See if you can contact Leo de Leon [ Manila ] as he is also growing Black pines.

Hope this helps.

Graham potter from kaizen? yes i have been following his videos in youtube lately. Truly brilliant, but the trees are some hard to find here locally. Even the materials he got are great.

So about the black pine, Bonsailelong and Stephagorn is in, G400 you in? Yes i'm buying from ebay, since i'm buying. I'll help you guys buy in the order. It'll be about rm20 for 5+ seeds. It'll take about 2week or 3 for it to reach. Are you guys ok with it? You can pay me when the seeds arrived.

So will be meeting you guys for ho min Yuen after CNY..

Literati Style,(Bunjin)

Anyone have this style of bonsai?
(i have one but it's dying, cucur atap.hope it will heal back now still brown foliage)

Sharing an article i found on the net.

What is Literati Style?

Of all the terms used to describe a Literati style bonsai, the words "refined elegance" have no doubt been used the most. While the words are indeed fitting for this style, they can also be used in conjunction with many other styles of bonsai. Literati style bonsai do have an air of refined elegance that lends greatly to their subtle beauty and while many claim that appreciating Literati bonsai is an acquired taste, I differ in this opinion and instead feel that quality Literati bonsai appeals to experienced, inexperienced, and non-bonsaist artistic sensibilities immediately.

I have had many opportunities to observe and listen to the comments of the inexperienced and the beginners of the art while they viewed bonsai at shows and events. Most were awe struck at Literati style bonsai and seem to "get it" almost immediately. It didn't matter that they may have never viewed a tree like it in nature, it didn't matter that it were truly unlike all the other bonsai on display, what mattered is that the Literati style bonsai spoke loudly of refinement and elegance and the viewer liked the image as presented.

Traditionally Literati bonsai have trunks that twist and turn in multiple, often dramatic curves, usually have slender trunks which have no lower branches to speak of, and have an obvious lack of Nebari in most cases. Closer to an informal upright than any other style, it escapes from classification as such because of the lack of Nebari and lower branches. But there is something else, the foliage of a Literati often is purposely sparse, just enough to sustain the tree and keep it healthy. John Naka once said of this style, "It is a dream, an abstract. It is an extremely advanced, significant bonsai design." These words of John's capture the essence of the Literati Style Bonsai.

John Naka wrote an article titled, "Characteristics of Bunjin Style" which was published in the Golden Statements Magazine (March/April 1993) and quoted recently by Eric Schrader at the Bonsai Society of San Francisco's web site. In this article about Literati, John made some other interesting definitions of the style, some of which I have listed below.

■It has shape or form but there is no definite pattern.
■It has no pattern, it is irregular and seems disfigured.
■It is like food that has no taste at the beginning but the more you chew the more flavor comes out. When you first look at Bunjin style there is nothing exciting about it, it is so skimpy and lonely. But the more you observe it the more the tree quality and natural traits will come out. You will feel something from inside of your mind, and not only through the surface eyes.
■It looks like it is struggling for its survival, or a form of agony. The tree itself should not be in this condition, in reality it should be healthy. The shape or form may indicate struggle but not health. It seems to be a very cruel method but it is only concept. Its appearance should not be too serious nor easy, it should be free, unconstrained, witty, clever, humorous and unconventional. A good example for this is a study of any of nature's tree that has survived some sort of problem or disaster.
■To avoid uselessness, the ultimate final form or shape is a very important technique.
■It should portray a simple abstract painting, Senryu, Haiku, poem, music and song.
■Shape or form is from wind, weather, not too rugged but more graceful.

Hope you guys enjoy..

Happy CHinese New Year!!!

Soon Lee33,
In Tampin? Is there any nursery there? Where is the location? My in Laws are in Tampin. I do go there every fortnight. Many Bonsai material there.

Bonsailelong,

Unfortunately no, it's so many materials there that sometimes i get lost in there. I did see a black pine, but couldn't make sure, only 1 tree there, it's either a J black pine or a chinese red pine. about 5-6m tall. in a black plastic. Will do in next trip, want to make a trip together? It will be more enjoyable & interesting visiting bonsai nursery with sifus...
